RAGBRAI DAY 1 Sioux CIty to Storm Lake

RAGBRAI 50th is off to a challenging start. BIG ridership numbers, some hills and heat - its officially on!
We got out of camp kinda early in hopes of beating the heat that first 27 miles to Kingsley was challenging for sure. Excitement was in the air and that air quickly became thick with humidity.
In this video I wanted to get the feel of what it's like to get out there with tons of people, the chatter, the sounds of the small towns. Then the calmness of hearing just the sounds of tires, chains and wind.
After Kingsley but before Washta, my bike was ghost shifting, which means it was just deciding on its own. Usually at the worst possible time to fall into a harder gear. GOOD TIMES!
So for the first time in my RAGBRAI experience I had to use the SAG service. It was pretty good, considering all the folks that were waiting in line to get picked up.
Decided to mix up the format for these days, by including the RELIVE video made from my Garmin GPS info. Kinda gives you a cool overview of the day with some photos thrown in. Let me know in the comments if you like seeing the overview.

There was a real lack of calling out and communicating this year. As a result I think there were more accidents than normal, I saw a lot of ambulances on the first day. I even saw people not moving over for the ambulance when people were calling out "car back". I chop it up to a lot of inexperienced riders this year.

I didn't want to come off as the fun police. But agree there was less chatter this year. I think it was a mix of new riders, and the heat perhaps clouding our judgment. I experienced the ambulance back thing as well.

I chatted with one of the ambulance drivers and he said the calls on day 1 alone were off the charts.

I'm the one you passed a few times wearing the yellow and black jersey riding the yellow and black road bike( the one with the noisy flat rear tire that couldn't be fixed but RAGBRAI still let me ride it anyway). There for a little while we were side by side and even told me that I had a flat tire on my bike. Had a good time riding it in RAGBRAI. Maybe I will get a chance to see and meet you again next year. Maybe by then I will have better tires and tubes. Bicycle shop been running crappy tires and tubes on me.

Equipment plays a big part in any ride, especially Ragbrai. I experienced my own ghost shifting issuse this year. Even though I'd had the bike checked out several times by skilled mechanics.

Awesome video! It looks like you had a blast although some of the other riders made it unnecessarily more dangerous for you. Thanks for highlighting the poor cycling etiquette and challenging the cycling community to do better. Participants understand there’s an inherent risk associated with cycling(and most everyone accepts it), but it sucks to have to now worry about being taken out by friendly fire. That young man demonstrated zero spatial awareness. Hope the folks over at RAGBRAI watch this video and challenge themselves to do better. Moreover, I find it kinda strange how event organizers claim to want to make these type of events as safe as possible and then sell tons of beer(and other adult beverages) during the ride. It sure makes for a good time for some but hella dangerous for others. Keep up the great work, I’m really enjoying your content. Just subscribed!

Thanks for subscribing and the kind words. I agree that their is a inherent risk with any cycling activity. All it takes is just a bit more awareness to make it safer for everyone.

I did RAGBRAI back in 2012. I was planning on doing it this year, until I started hearing about the Horde of bike riders. Now that I'm watching your video. I am so glad I did not ride this year. But, I will ride next year. Looks like to many people not paying attention.

I agree that there seemed to be many riders not calling out their moves and unfamiliar with group style riding. It would be interesting to learn the number of "registered first timers" for this year. Along with how that compares to previous years.

Lived in Sioux City for 20 years. Never did RAGBRAI. Watching this and reading the comments reminds me why I didn't. Not claiming it's not fun, it just doesn't look like my kind of fun. I've always wondered WTF they run this during the hottest part of the summer in Iowa?

Yeah. I guess tradition, everyone gets the same suffer fest. Heat, humidity and some hills. Lol. Sioux City was a great host.

Thank you for commenting about people not respecting the unofficial rules while on the road; ie ride right and on your left, car up and car back. Because we ride a tandem, we are very fast downhill and on the flats. We had to call out “on your left” several times to people hogging the white line on the left hand side or the right side of the yellow line when only one lane is being used/ cars coming, and still not moving.

It can cause some big issues. I remember Ragbrai using a "Ride Right" flyer in previous years. Actually can't recall if that addressed this issue. I was told years ago by my my teammates who were all more experienced Ragbrai riders, when I first started. Thanks for the comment, love seeing those tandems (and triples) cruising by me.

@@philandthedash1682 we are not very experienced at riding in a crowd/ race, but we educated ourselves before our first RAGBRAI last year. We have also picked up things from other riders, like to make announcements when you are slowing/ stopping, pointing before moving lanes and looking back over your shoulder (much easier on a tandem). I think a lot has to do with riders being uneducated about certain things, but that will hopefully get better with experience.

Which charter did you use? How do you compare it to your other RAGBRAIs, I heard you mention having panniers in the past and being self supported. I’ve only done two RAGBRAIs one in 2021 with Pork Belly Ventures (PBV) and this year with my Class C RV. I dipped Friday night to beat the crowds. You are a natural on video, come across as real comfortable in front of the camera. I would suggest you lower the music volume slightly, could really hear clearly near the end when you were talking with the map in view, the music over came your voice. Great music selection, video and narrative though!

Thanks for the kind words. We used CIC this year. It was a totally different experience than using a baggage only charter or bagging it. I'm planning to do a video on charter / baggage service / self supported soon. It's really a big part of your overall experience.

Good first day! The RELIVE video is a cool way to intro the video. My only critique of the whole video is to lose the music. I would rather listen to the sounds of nature and the riders around you than music. Natural sounds lend to the whole experience which is what we are living vicariously through you. Interesting comments on where to ride on the road and passing. Looking forward to Wednesday!!

Probably not filming... I really had to fight the urge to just push record and leave it on. Did that in a test run and the footage was tough to edit. But thanks for the motivation, especially on a hill!

…The last time I participated in RAGBRAI, I sustained severe injuries because of unsafe novice or selfish cycling behavior. …I like the idea of RAGBRAI, but the event has become too large (30,000-50,000 attendees). Fun but not the safest ride. Peace.

Riding in a group of any size presents its own challenges. I agree that the big numbers make this very challenging for new and experienced riders in different ways.
