RAF Bungay. The Hunt For More Lost Remains. 8th Air Force, 446th Bomb Group. Flixton Suffolk.

#WW2 #Suffolk #RAFBungay
Today we take you along with us as we hunt out more hidden remains from the RAF Airbase of Bungay here in Flixton Suffolk. This time we are exploring another communal site where the army personal would have stayed whilst stationed here.
Dispite alot of this area being lost to development we still manage to find a few more remains left, largely forgotten and hidden here in the woods.
The United States Army Air Force 2nd Air Division, 8th Air Force constituted as the 446th Bombardment Group (Heavy) operated here from 1943 to 1945.

Keep em coming guys, lovin this history. I'm old now but when I was a nipper (circa 1962) a few friends and I explored woodland near a still active WW2/Cold War RAF base in Suffolk where our Dad's were serving airmen. Hidden among trees we came across an old air raid shelter still sealed with its heavy metal doors intact. Inside was perfectly preserved with packets of cocoa and crumbling remains of provisions stacked on shelves. A nice discovery for curious kids playing.

That must have been really great to explore! Shame there's still not more places like that left intact these days but with so many airbases once in the area there's still always something interesting to find. Thanks for watching and sharing your memories with us 😊👍

@@ExploringWithEmAndStu My pleasure. Yes, that's a fond memory from a long time ago. In those days I think kids were given more freedom to explore their natural environment, and as you know, all these airbases in E Anglia were set deep in the countryside. So for me, the son of a serviceman who has always loved the countryside, it was an ideal, happy childhood. Although I didn't think about it at the time, discovering that air raid shelter around 1960-2 was only a mere 15 years or so after the end of WW2. During the war the airbase itself was a highly active operational station, initially for the RAF, then the USAF. So perhaps not so surprising to find discoveries like this. With many air raid shelters set hidden in remote locations, I think all are worth exploring because even now it's possible some may still remain undisturbed. I still remember this one being dry and as clean as a whistle inside. Appreciate your interest. I'm secretly envious of you living in East Anglia surrounded by such lovely countryside. I always considered our time there special and would love to return to visit and explore the old airfields that remain. But for now, I depend on you for doing such a great job!

That was really cool. There's definitely no way i would disturb that water much less walk in it. Thats how you get a disease, or super powers, lol. Years ago i made the mistake of trudging thro water like that in a basement tunnel and the floor underneath it was slick like ice and once disturbed the smell was overpowering. I could still smell it a couple days later after multiple showers and throwing away my shoes.

Lol no you wouldn't get us wading through water like that either even if we did have our wellies! We decided you could see enough just from the doorway.. like you say smells like that never goes away! 😆
