    I seriously remember when AMD had GPU side locked down for laptop dedicated GPU options as they were the only really good option, until 10 series though I wouldn't have said there was a thing as a laptop that could game, because the Wattage requirements of the Chips for their die size wasn't at an acceptable level. Nice to see comp. in the space again and perhaps a greater benefit down the road with innovations.

    WARNING: Tech Review Channels rushed to publish after AMD lifted the media embargo and failed to notice that ASUS shipped these laptops with BAD RAM knowingly or unknowingly. Jarrod's Tech, a dedicated gaming laptop channel, has highlighted in the comments that changing stock RAM in the Strix results in a 20% performance improvement, which is a lot when it comes to GPU vs GPU comparisons. I personally think AMD is to blame for not screening which laptop was sent for early reviews. But notice how all early reviews highlight performance anomalies.

    AMD says the 6800 is targetting 1440p - we know 1080 gaming has some weird things like RAM timings causing a 10% difference in FPS - why not test this laptop in 1440p, AMD's stated use case?

  • @racerex340

    @racerex340

    3 жыл бұрын

    I'm assuming they did test and saw some of the weirdness that others saw and elected not to publish. There is suspicion that Asus might have done something weird with SmartShift that causes the 6800M to show less 1440p performance than expected. I noticed that he said that the tests were not in turbo mode, so that would explain the lower than expected power consumption on the GPU, which is really what leads me to call bullshit. Something was up with the peak performance in Turbo mode, so rather than publish those results, they chose performance mode, and it feels like they did in order for the system to have an excuse as to why it didn't perform as it should have. Come on guys, you should have tested this with the laptop in Turbo mode, and 1440p, especially since AMD said these should be 1440p gaming focused, so much so that AMD advantage requires over 144Hz panels.

    To be fair, 3080 mobile is the full GA104 chip running at a lower frequency, making it much more efficient. It's also the reason why a 3070 mobile would have to run at a higher wattage to match it. 6800M is straight up 6700XT's full Navi 22 chip running at 2.3GHz - do you realize that's 2.3GHz on a laptop GPU? With DLSS 2.0/2.1, it's a more matured technology compared to FSR, not to mention its natural advantage of a hardware-based solution (while FSR is a software-based one) and bigger list of supported games. RX6800M would still sell very well thanks to its amazing p/p, so tbh it's not a big deal. You need to check the secondary timings on the memory on these laptops. Both Jarrod's Tech and Hardware Unboxed found that their 6800M samples had atrocious timings. HUB swapped the kit to a more reasonable one and their conclusion differs quite a bit from yours. At 1080p it was all back-and-forth between the 6800M and the 3080. Obviously at 1440p on an external monitor the 3080 won, but it was only by a 5% margin IIRC.

    Nice to see AMD being competitive again with laptop GPUs, that and their partnership with Samsung for smartphones, they really are everywhere! Do those 6000M laptops use the same Adrenaline drivers as their desktop counterparts or specific ones that must be donwloaded from the laptop manufacturers? That would mean less frequent updates and/or with more delay?

    there are heaps of driver issues atm...i had to return my zeph g15....bc it was STUCK in whispermode 2.0 greyed out in nv control panel, and as id disable it in nv geforce experience...it would automatically turn back on. Bestbuy was not able to disable it outside of a facory reset...with potential of a GPU update and eventual whispermode 2.0 being stuck on again outside of my return window....I had to return it and not consider an ampere laptop for fear of encoutering this again....it came as a byproduct of amd/nvidia/asus suite drivers constantly updating including the bios. At some point after an "update" whispermode was some how in nv control panel of which it never was....and stuck on 40fps cap in bfV 60 fps in cs:go 90 in gta v...among other fps hard caps in other games.....inronically only turned off when un-plugged....some bug/driver issue. That im sure has plagued their RMA department. The only way that system wouldnt run hot af...is if i manually set the cpu to 25w. It even struggled to run Diablo 3 with a fps cap of 120 pre bug....cool/quiet...bc the system was all....oh wow i can really pump the 5900h with 60w in turbo mode byahhhh.....if i didnt hard cap diablo 3 and not run turbo mode...LUL. Same for cs:go....Making it a head scratch of a time even with an external monitor on cs go. Theres still some troubleshooting ahead with these systems....im sure by q3-q4 theyll be dialed in and i can sell my amoled OMEN for a proper 16:10 3070 laptop.

    Well , FSR is around the corner , June 22nd , depenting on the Quality hit for the Performance Boost of 50 -300 % for all Radeon GPUs / APU from Polaris onwards this could be a real Game changer . Especially in APU and mobile / Laptops we will see and noticeable push in FPS , an APU in FHD that current has 25-40 FPS will get , depending on the Quality Setting , from 35 to 80-90 FPS . Vega is supported , Polaris too = the older cards get a push as well , even older NVidea cards ( i f NVidea invest Time and money to implement FSR in their Drivers , i am not that convident there .. ) If the Image Quality is OK ( has too be seen ) than you can set an FPS Limit and your APU/ Card stays cool and uses way less energy = higher Battery Lifetime.

    Its' already been noted that Asus messed up here by using low RAM timings (probably as a cost saving measure seeing how most OEM's don't bother with putting in higher quality fast RAM with low timings), and also because of chip shortages). This, and lack of a MUX switch to shut off the iGP during gaming (and delegate this workload entirely to the dGPU) is lowering the 6800 performance by about 30-35% in total (so the GPU is actually much more powerful than this particular laptop design is indicating).

But if the colors are good enough for work/content consumption. If we can see 800-1000$ 5600h zen3 options with a 6600m that would be a nice start esp if some have full soundcards/dac/amps onboard and are still sub 1000$ with displayport out. That aside...the 11th gen intel and zen3 apu have been proven to be good stand alone GPUs' as far as "budget" with the eventuality of RDNA2 onbaord amd cpus...AMD will not be "looking" towards competing with the mx450 etc bc their apu will cover that...as well as being able to be offered in an ultrabook formfactor and 9hr batterylife. IJS this is their roadmap of success...add usb4 potential essentially/seemingly trying to bridge the thunderbolt gap....with a potential for e-gpu viability with amd apu...right around the corner...god willing

    Awesome Review. Quick Question. I bought Alienware M17 R4 1 week ago & am considering & switching out for this 1 at retailer. Alienware Has Intel i7, RTX 3070 (140watt tdp max w/ no MUX switch since only dedicated GPU), 16gb ram (non upgradable) & 1tb HD. Only concerns I have on Asus Strix G15 w/ RX 6800m is no Mux switch, hotter thermals on CPU & lower performance ram. Considering switching for $600 savings & upgradable ram. This is my ONLY gaming device & I use it for 100% gaming & some web surfing which this gets killer battery life vs 1.5 hours with alien ware. What are you guys thoughts between the 2? Thanks in advance

Except, even though Legion was announced as one of the partners with AMD, when can we expect to actually get our hands on one? I'm still not able to get one of the Nvidia spec'd 2021 Legion 5 models. So what, I have to wait 6 months for a model to show up, and then into next year before I'll actually be able to buy one? And then I'll be looking at the next gen Nvidia stuff instead. If this translates into a bunch of models being available very soon then I'd totally be in the market for it. exactly most of us in the know are smart enough to wait for retailers to be on the back end of their stock before they have to re-stock...theyll go on sale. So if the sticker is already at a high price point and were trying to gauge a 100-200$ off price point....a high entry can be damning. 2-300$ BETWEEN competitors to me....= buying the cheaper option with similar/exact specs....but a lesser monitor if i can buy a proper monitor for work/play ill prioritize one over the other for the included laptop panel in a CHEAPER than premium option...then compensate the difference with a dedicated monitor. FHD for gaming and a nice color accurate qhd or amoled 4k for the laptop....or a fast refresh FHD on the laptop and an ideal COLOR 4k monitor for "WORK"...just depends on the ratio of work needed to be done on teh laptop or away from a dedicated monitor. But wed be foolish to not act like there arent 2-400$ price gaps among 3070 laptops as well as the various wattages offered. I mean there are some VA 21:9 monitors for 400$....Makes people consider the omen with the 3070 or the 6800M options if they truly will be 1600$ or less. If they can buy that for 2000-2200$ tax. Its still less than most 3080 laptops and theyd be bypassing optimus with an external monitor...while being able to use adaptive sync which is a large factor for ideal laptop gaming for me...and typically not offered on the included panels.

    What will be interesting to see since we know Nvidia can use dlss, is how amd's upcoming solution might bridge the gap. It did look like you might not have used dlss but all those numbers are crazy high anyway, lol

    These amd gpu looks very exciting but for someone like me who want to go into deeplearning l/AI domain, I would always prefer nvidia over amd as deeplearning models need cuda to run on(tensorflow) and those cuda are used in nvidia gpu only(as far i know). You could use amd gpu but it need a lot of tickering. So cuda in nvidia is similar to thunderbolt in Intel
