Rade Garage Rally Screen. For KTM 390/790/890 Adventure.

Спорт

In this video I go through the installation and look of the Rade Garage Rally Screen for the KTM 390 Adventure, 790 Adventure and 890 Adventure motorcycles. The same screen fits all three bikes. I made one modification to the screen that I think makes it look much better. Check out my review of the windscreen to see if it might be for you.

Alright, now that I’ve watched the video, I’ve got a question for you… I’m currently running the same sport smoked screen you had when you crashed. I recently did the Smokey Mountain 500 trip, and found on the way back that the amount of buffeting at 70-75MPH on the highway was just way too much, and found myself standing occasionally to quiet down the noise. Is this screen much better at the buffeting aspect than the other was? I know you touched on it in the end of the video, but you didn’t seem to indicate it was MUCH different. My newest helmet is a Klim Krios Pro, and it’s quite a bit louder than my previous helmet, which makes that buffeting just about unbearable (considering putting the stock screen back on and dealing with the extra wind pressure because of it).

@@Jared01 good question. At 70 to 75 MPH this screen is marginally better, but not significantly. Maybe with an extender it would be better. I still prefer a lot over the Givi screen.

Looks good. I agree, the black looks better than clear. It's probably not realistic to expect a screen that's not a giant touring screen to get over the helmet. I tried the Givi touring screen, and while it almost put the wind over my helmet, it was so tall that the top vibrated noticeably and I foijd it distracting. Very satisfied with my Givi, but thank you for your thought on an alternative. - Frank

Very timely. Normally I ignore anything to do with screens, as they are so 'individual'. This , however, may be very timely, and prove to be an inexpensive upgrade for me. Reason being, one of those headlight shrouds (winglet things) that the screen replaces has gone awol from my bike :) So rather than replace that part, I could replace it with a better screen with a gps mount and get more space and less buffeting. Hmmm, mibbe I'll get one of these.

I can't tell because of using my phone but the little air diverters that are on the left and the right side of the headlight that look like little wings or whatever try taking those off. I have the Givi windscreen like you had and on a whim I try taking those off and now I can do 85 on this thing with minimal buffeting. It's like it allows the air to dreamline better across the lower parts of your body and doesn't create as much of a negative pressure in the chest area. Best part about doing that is it takes literally 5 minutes to take them off or put them back on two screws on each side.

As usual a really valuable video. I fitted the PowerParts extender and it was way better than stock for getting that bubble sorted but I recently discovered whilst riding behind a large lorry on an A road here in the UK that it caused the bike to 'wobble' and swerve which was unnerving to say the least. I removed it as I have been doing some more commuting lately and that's gone now. Have you experienced this issue at all Matt with this screen behind larger vehicles? I like the black touches too, great helpful video as usual. By the way, I have 900 miles on my 390 and now got the stalling issue going down the gears, you had that issue didn't you? Was that the clutch switch issue or didn't you resolve it? Sorry, off topic really. I agree with Mark Churchward, we just haven't got big off road areas where we can ride here in the UK, really envious too. Stay safe mate.

I have noticed some of the buffeting from large vehicles but as much as I can, I avoid riding behind them. It hasn't seemed to matter which windscreen I was using. This bike is on the lighter side so it is not as planted on the road at higher speeds. As for the stalling I firmly believe the problem comes from the valve tolerances. I took my bike in for the valve adjustment which required new shims on two of the valves. After that the stalling issues went away. I know you only have 900 miles on your bike but during the break in period all of the bikes settle in a little different. I think the same shims were used in all bikes but valve trains aren't going to be the same on all bikes. Just my opinion. Hope this helps.

@@advmatt That's interesting about the screen buffeting and stalling, great insight. It's going in for its first service next week, was delayed so I will mention this to the engineer. I am also getting a lot of squealing from the front brake too, is this something you also had? I think you changed out your chain didn't you if I recall in an earlier video? I think you changed the sprockets set too, do you recall which make and chain in the end, how is that going? The stock chain and really stretched badly and I know it's meant to be a bit of an issue. Going back to your screen, the side panels near the headlight, specifically the bolts at the top, mine are really stiff to remove, did you experience this too? Thanks for your videos, there is not a great deal on content out there for the 390 partly because it's so new still I guess but also, because it's a smaller capacity machine so I am really grateful that you manage these videos at all.

@@nickdart4772 I did change out the chain and sprockets at 8k, but it needed it much sooner. The replacement set has almost 10k on it now and has a lot of life left on it. I dont remember the brand, but anything is better than the stock chain. I have found a lot of bolts on this bike are tight and have a lot of thread locker on them. I try to be careful when removing them as I have heard of stripped and broken bolts. I have not had any braking issues so I dont have any advice for you on that one. You are just a little taller than I am. You will get wind coming over this windscreen and hitting you around mid visor in the your helmet. It might not be too bad depending how quiet of a helmet you have but if you have any cameras or communications on your helmet you will definitely have wind noise. You would need to add a windscreen extension if you want to be in the bubble completely. I was told some riders have added the extension with success but I have not seen it and I have not done it. Sorry I don't have better news for you. I find it to be acceptable below 60 MPH, over that it gets a bit noisy.

I've spent some time on a Honda CB500x, which has an Ok looking screen that is much less noisy but the rider is positioned down lower relative to the front end (but the bike doesn't handle nearly as well). So I think with the KTM the choice is to have a big-ass ugly screen or put up with some noise. The upside is that this geometry also results in a bike that is a blast to ride, handling-wise.
