Nice Only small issue with Ride Mode and ABS on the up and down buttons is if you select Rally ride mode, the buttons then become your rear wheel slip control, and you have to manually exit Rally first to get them back. But for hopping quickly between street and offroad modes, its a good thing.

Thank You Ian!!! I just picked up my new 2021 890 ADV R, I chose this bike largely due to your in depth videos. I went for a short shake down ride today and absolutely love the bike. Had to cut it short due to snow and ICE on the fire roads in the San Bernardino Mountains. This is my first adventure bike and had never looked into this type of bike before. I will be completing my initial bike setup straight away. Thank you for all of your hard work we all appreciate it.

Great electronics overview! I learned a few new things about my 790 and will definitely use the suggested Quickselector settings. I thought the rear ABS was shut off on Off-Road mode but now it makes sense why I felt ABS kick in while breaking the rear downhill. I just completed my first service and had the Quickshifter update installed and I highly recommend it.

I have had this bike for a year now and I am a pretty aggressive rider and don't want to rely on electronics (I was racing Supersport 600 cups in the 1990s). I mainly use Rally mode, also for street riding, with TC on 1, ABS Offroad (only basic front ABS). The great thing with Rally mode is it keeps all settings but it is weird that there is no TC 0 setting. You can turn TC off in Rally mode but then you can not use the curser buttons to bring it back up if you want to, which I do when it gets really wet or muddy.

Actually your assessment is a little off, rain mode "softens" throttle response but also limits total power, several times I have accidentally left it in rain mode and it feels like a different bike altogether. I'm gonna guess a 20 % reduction in total power output, it really works! A lot of internet guru's poo poo the electronics package of the 790R but it could save your butt!

If you use Rally mode, and set ABS to ‘Off Road’ only rear ABS is off, as I prefer it, and it doesn’t reset to ‘Street mode ABS on’ after key cycle off/on like it does if you turn off ABS completely. When in Rally mode don’t turn off TC if you want to use TC levels 1-9, and if you turn off TC and cycle the key off/on it resets to TC on anyway. You could get in serious trouble with ABS in Street mode when riding off road. Also, I don’t know about you but I like the ability to change the TC on the fly while riding just using the Up and Down switches with my left thumb, so TC is on for me. Happy Riding :)

ABS. My 2021 KTM 890 Adventure has only 2 ABS modes. Either ON or OFF-ROAD. I am assuming the OFF-ROAD modes is only rear wheel ABS turned off. Based on recent 2023 KTM 890 Adventure / R launch video, looks like KTM doesn't see a need for full OFF mode ABS; front turned off as well. Great video. Great refresher once a years before the season starts. Thanks.

@@Vlerkies I may be wrong on this, but I think the R models come with the full suite. With the S models you have to pay to get them released. However, KTM usually updates the electrickery from year to year, so if you've got a 19 R you'll get the upgrades to 20 R specs, if you've got a 19 S you'll get the 20 S specs. Honestly, I don't know whether this applies, cos I have this nagging feeling that the 790 is a 20 model year. However, I reckon this is useful general information to know, and I don't know of ANY other manufacturer who does this.

@@davidcolin6519 Hi David, not sure on the 'S' models, I assumed the guys asking had 'R's' as per the video, but you are well correct that some things are not on the 'S' model default suite. Rally mode for instance is definitely not out the box on the 'S', but you can unlock it at a cost. Around here the dealers will upgrade your software to the latest version if you ask them to or at a scheduled service if a new version becomes available, but only to the same point you had on your bike before. This may add extra functionality, ease of use or a menu option perhaps, but not capability as such if you did not have it before, if that makes sense. For instance the electronic quick shifter gear shift is not unlocked by default on the 'R', its there but you need to pay to unlock it when you purchase the bike. No software upgrade will unlock it unless you pay the man. If the folks asking have 'R' models it would be interesting to see what version of the software they have, 1V29 is the current version/latest right now. I would have thought the quick 'selector' options would be std though across the board.

Like any modern bike they are all full of electronics, I don't think many manufacturers are well covered in Africa outside of the Japanese models. That said remote places find ways to help you out I have found. If you live in the states take one to the bottom of South America that will give it a good test and there is KTM most reasonable sized towns there. I had to get my BMW worked on in a few KTM shops on my trip through SA in particular. I think the 790 would be worth the gamble based on how good they are on rough roads and no roads, worst case stick it on a truck to the next major town :-)

I used to be worried about electronics failing however our cars and trucks are run by computers and we rarely question the reliability. I think the bugs are pretty much worked out with the new 890 and wouldn’t worry about it. Any bike can break down.

I have a 2020 R model. When I go into settings and “quick selector 1” or “2”, it does not give me the options for ride mode or abs.

Same thing here! I have a 2019 R model (of one of the first batches), can only select trip 1, trip 2, MTC/MSR, and general info for each of the quick selector buttons... What's more, if I opt for MTC/MSR, it configures trip 1, so actually only 3 choices... I do live in Europe, maybe there is some sort of regulation that prevents KTM from enabling all options, because when I turn the ignition key off and back on, it does not remember my ABS setting either (ABS always on) as explained in this video.

Very detailed, but just a bit of constructive feedback: it would have more impact if we actually saw less of you and your riding on the dirt and more of the button presses and screen displays, toggled a little slower in a shorter video. Otherwise, keep up the good work!

The tech would be good at first, but six months later I'd be over it. Was riding with some guys that had tech on their bikes, they struggled on a narly steep hill, traction control was the culprit from memory. Does it have an explanation of what to do if the setting don't work, like I'm struggling in sand, what do I do?

My understanding for sand is to ideally turn MTC off to have no intervention. If in Rally Mode, then setup TC to 1 (which does have a little intervention)

Are you out of gas, or do you have a failed fuel sender unit? I just had mine replaced under warranty (2019, S model). Seems a common issue on the 2019’s.

No, it just doesn't read properly on the sidestand, the bike has to upright for a few minutes. but my fuel was kind of low too

I don't believe you need to go to the dealer to reset service intervals.

I wrote the following on adv Rider forum in answer to ride modes on the 790 adv To be found on 790adventure.net/models/riding-modes-explained/ I have no prove except what I feel the back tire Is doing on tarmac when accelerating out of a bend under a lean angle with the bike in Rally mode and for instance tc on number 4 You can really feel the back wheel getting more power when straightening up compared to when your still leaned over in the corner. " Even though I find your site wonderfull and have got a lot of info from it I don't think all the info on ride modes is entirely correct this seems logical to me ride mode Street lean angle sensor ON only exception is Ride mode Street in combination with Off-road ABS lean angle sensor Off ride mode Off-road lean angle sensor Off ( even with Road ABS activated lean sensor is still off) ride mode Rally with road ABS engaged lean angle sensor ON ride mode Rally with Off-road ABS engaged lean angle sensor off" This way you have more possibilties to customise the settings for your needs.
