Greetings from the USA! Excellent 50,000km review, It's reassuring to see it. I own a 2020 KTM 790 Adventure R and have had a great experience so far. Zero issues and one recall for the brake spring. I also owned a Honda Magna in the past where my starter would stick and not work causing me to push start the bike so legendary reliability is not always the case. This is my first KTM and no complaints so far, I'm actually enjoying the brand and also lucky to have a dealer with great customer service, called Wooly's Cycle of Atlanta, a family-owned and operated. I would consider another KTM at this point and have considered the 890 as the next bike but might wait until 2023 since KTM tends to update models every two years. Congrats on the bike you ordered! Cheers!

Thanks for doing this. I would be very happy with this reliability. The fork seals on my Africa Twin went in the first few months. It wasn’t a polite little dribble. Both seals went and the front of the bike was soaked. I had to replace the brake pads as well. Of course, it was not covered under warranty.

Great video, it’s clear and very detailed👌 I absolutely loved my 2020 790 Adv R in the beginning, but unfortunately it turned into a bad ownership experience. First, there was no bike handover from the sales team, so I ended up taking the bike out of the dealership myself, which was really weird and disappointing, to me at least. Second, the clutch pack was replaced twice within the first year. First one was at 3,000kms, the second was at 11,000kms. I had to wait for 2 weeks without a bike for the ‘express’ order to arrive, because the dealership didn’t have any parts in stock, nor demo / courtesy bikes 🤯 Third, I kept getting endless errors on my TFT screen, ranging from key failure to ABS failure to TC failure - on & off-road. Love KTM as a brand, but I dislike their lack of after sales support. I definitely don’t see myself owning another KTM unless they truly change their approach.

They had the seal in stock, but wanted me to wait almost three month for a workshop appointment. Not so funny, if you buy a new bike in June and cannot ride it from July to mid of October. Next time, if they don't have a seal for you, measure the inner and outer diameter and try to find a generic seal with the measurements, it should do the job on any bike?

Terrific review 👌 and gives the lie to KTM being more unreliable than other manufacturers. Let us hope that Husqvarna have taken the feedback and have used a bonded TFT as used by BMW and Triumph. I had 3x TFT on my 790 and all of them leaked, ALL of them. But they never failed. I am very much looking forward to your Norden 901 experience, please please keep us updated on the TFT. The 890 engine I tried is much more tractable with the heavier crank. Thanks for your feedback! Yes, I am really hoping the new TFT unit (which seems to be new hardware) is now really 100% waterproof. Can't be too difficult, considering that I e g never had Garmin GPS leaking in water! A friend of mine comment "Never buy a motorcycle from an exotic manufacturer!" but he was probably not aware that the Husqvarna brand is owned by Pierer Mobility, so the Husky bikes are basically redressed KTMs. And the 790/890 engines have been around now for three, four years or so. So problems with mine engine wise!

Thanks! I will probably not do many modification. With the mileage I am doing, I have never kept a bike for more than four, five seasons and learned that I will never get back that investment when I sell it. Also the Norden 901 seems quite complete. It has the low fender which I prefer (my personal opinion: a high fender looks silly on a 220kg bike that is never used like a sports enduro) and the auxiliary lights (good to be seen by other). I will remove the passenger handles because they collide with my Mosko Moto R80, but most likely keep the plastic carrier. The bike WILL get some sort of heated grips, so much is for sure. February, maybe...!

Brilliant video. Reliability is, like any statistics, always difficult to judge whether you will be unlucky or not. I have a Multistrada 950 now, but I'm consideringing something a little smaller, a little lighter and more dirt-worthy for example like going to the north of Sweden and Norway like you did. A slightly used 790 is a candidate, but I'm a bit worried about the reliability. The Norden 901 is cool, but in Denmark it's unfortunately quite a lot more expensive than both the 890 and 890R. Also 700€ for the big service is cheap in my context! I paid 2000€ for the big 30.000km-service on the Ducati. Full service, new timingbelts and adjustment of 11 of the 16 desmo-valves took them almost 3 days...😅

Thanks for your review, Kai-Uwe. And I can underline the "myth" about Ktm and their issues of quality. I changed my 790 R last winter for the new 1290 R and I had exactly the same problems that you had, moisture in the display and one leaking front fork, both on warranty(the fork with a little bit of goodwill). I rode that bike 19000 km in two years of time on gravel mostly. Before that I have had a 990 R between 2010/ 2014(32000 km) and a 1190 R between 2014/2019(29000 km) with no issues non so ever. I have ridden my current 1290 R 12000 km also with no issues. A total of 4 Ktm bikes, eleven years and 92000 km. I don´t know about some written statistics between different brands about warranty issues, I only can tell from my own experience. Staffan/Karlstad

The drop in quality in recent years is very obvious to KTM mechanics. One of the best here in Greece has come across corroded forks in a brand new (5.000 kms travelled) 790R which was eventually compensated and covered in warranty. This was unheard of in the era of the 950/990s adventures. I owned a 2009R and travelled 110.000kms before selling it and all the reliability issues I had with it concerned minor parts like clutch and slave master cylinders, TPS and other small peripheral components. Extremely corroded forks in a brand new bike indicate a substantial drop in manufacturing quality control and/or processes. These forks would eventually snapped if the owner continued riding. Compare those to the looking like brand new, used forks of a 990. Accompanying this drop in quality is a RISE in pricing which is extremely disturbing.

TBBs from video are way too unpredictable and or too early than Japanese bikes. :( I would love a KTM Duke 790 and still doing research

Yay, he's back. I so wanted to buy one of these Adv 790R, but the KTM dealer network and accounts of poor customer service put me off. Motorcycle dealers are no different to car dealers ripping their customers off. Shall look forward to your thoughts on your new bike. You have never reviewed your Ducati Scrambler? Happy New Year.

Thanks! No, I have not done any review on that one. I bought it as a second bike for short rides, like literally riding into the city for some ice cream and the occasional after work ride out on the countryside. However the suspension, mainly on the rear, is not even suitable for smaller roads with less smoot asfalt roads and it is totally unsuitable for gravel. Also the seat is too soft, so in combination it feels like I am getting hit by a hammer from below all the time. The engine and gear box are wonderful at the other side, but it doesn't help. I realized I used the bike much to seldom, so it needs to go again. It's also a matter of operating cost, because I have a third bike (Yahama WR250R) at my summer/weekend house. Insurace is summing up...

31,000 km on mine, serviced at 937km, 4,000, 9500, 14,900, 25,000, 31,000, it's in the workshop right now getting the camshafts and followers replaced. These engines are a rubbish design and a terrible build quality. The cam lobes are soft, the cam follower is much narrower than the cam at 11mm wide and 7.5mm for the cam follower, their follower design increases the mechanical advantage of valve spring over the cam lobe. By comparison my Triumph's valve clearances never moved in 3 checks in 60,000 km.

I have never tried this! Actually I realize now that the bike never left Sweden, got it in 2019 and the Covid prevented all international travel. However even going down to the ferry in Malmö I am trying to avoid motorways, execpt first bit to get away from the well known roads around Stockholm and maybe at the rnd if time is an issue. Guess the helmet turbulences would get very tiring. The 901 seems to be a bit better in that respect and if I take her down to Germamy and Slovenia this summer I’ll use a helmet without shield.

@@sergebinder9363 By far too small tank. For getting the 901 I sold my scrambler Icon, same engine and tank as the desert sled. The yellow light went to at 200km, which is ok if I'm somewhere around Stockholm, but for going far north this is by far too little. Last summer I missed one gas station on the TET in Lappland. Next one was about 50km away, no problem I thought, I am not going back now. Unfortunately the next one was closed down. So I had another 50km to Karesuando and made it there with a mere 2l left, 460km overall distance. I ever trust the meter 100%, preferably I am filling up around 300km. ;-)

Yes, when I travelled with the 790 this was possible - speed limits e g in Norway are 70/90, speeding tickets are REALLY expensive (several hundret Euros) and the landscape too beautiful to rush through! If you ride it rally style this is a different story, of course!

I think my 790 was running quite well. Compare that to the CRF1000L I had before, which all the „child diseases“ that have been reported in the www: rusty spokes, defective switches, start switch taking in rain water and worst valve clearances that were so far out of spec that the mechanic called Honda to confirm the values in the workshop manual!

Africa twin hasnt inertial plattform and abs cornering. The first model had not ride by wire 😂😂😂. And the high quality of japan were 2 pistons brake, and no TUBELESS 😂😂. Anyway a africatwin 1100 that has less power and less sporty engine of an 890 (but a 790 adv is the same: eats every africatwin when it wants). And his weights is 226 kg. Dct 236 kg. You are talking of 2 different bikes. One.is a sleep bike. Too smooth, little power for his weight. And the other is a racing bike. People pay attention at a few of oil loosing from thank of front brake, but don t know that has a bike with component of 90 yrs (honda). If you pass from an africatwin to an 790 adv is like to take a punch on the face.

No offense but anyone riding a motorcycle should be aware of their own maintenance needs. It is only worse if you didnt pay attention to the detail offered to you from the dealer. To amplify the fact it was covered with the receipt, only shows your lack of attention to detail. Which is likely why you missed the wear on the front sprocket. It seems you may feel a bit guilty for your own lack of attention and wish to blame someone else. I will close by saying, I am thankful I dont work for KTM and have you as a customer!
