KTM 790 Adventure R - 15.000 km REVIEW

This is my 15.000 km Review of the KTM 790 Adventure R. The bike is not without it's faults, but in my opinion they are minor and get replaced on warranty. This is still my favourite bike and i can't see any other bike on the market that does everything as well as the 790 Adventure R.
Enjoy

Thomas, I enjoyed your video. You seem like reasonable guy to me. Let me tell you, and maybe you speak german, I don´t know, just check the german KTM forums. It´s a complete disaster there with this model. I was so in love with this bike. Almost traded my GS in for this model and I´m glad I did not. It´s not only the oil leakage. And even if it was, KTM seems not be in the position to fix it for their customers. There are problems with loose bolts, especially from the quickshifter. I mean, c´mon. 14.000€ for a bike and nobody thought of this? The dash has problems with moisture. German dealers, last time I red the topic, were supposed to no change them anymore under warranty, because the new ones are all faulty, too! Just a friendly reminder. This thing costs 800 € after the warranty runs out. Many people there had problems with the brakes, a dying engine out of nowhere, overheating on single tracks, where the motor dies too. If it wasn´t this unreliable, I would buy it in a heartbeat. But the number of problems are too hefty and this is the reason you can buy it with much discount from the first year of production. Even brand new. I am happy, that you do not experience that much of a PITA with this bike, but please check the facts, before you say there are too many negative reviews in this bike, just because you are in the lucky position to not have them. There are many negative reviews, because there are many problems. Thats the simple maths behind this. I hope you won´t experience them in the future and stay safe.

Well, to be fair. I love a good discussion about this bike. And i do see that there are some minor issues with the bike, and i'm not sure how warranty and customer rights are in other countrys, but in Norway we have some good laws on our side. A couple of bolts that need locktight are imo no problem at all! we all know about them and make sure to watch for this on regular maintenance. The dash has moisture problems, like every other bike i have own. It is hard to prevent this when you see where they have to put the dash, and whats right underneet (the engine) My r1200 GSA had the same issue, my 1290 adventure r... etc. No problem, the dash still works, and they replace it without discussion from KTM 😊They are working on a new dash, and everyone that has a warranty claim will get new one as soon as its on the market. Again, a minor issue and no real problem in my opinion. I'm not sure what other brake problems you refer to, but i have problems with mine, but this is also a minor problem and not a only KTM problem? And to say that all bikes is a problem is wrong imo. Yes, i do understand it frustrating to have a faulty bike brand new. But how many bikes are sold? and how many bikes is really unreliable? I had more problems with my KTM 1290 Adventure R, the BMW r1200 GSA and KTM 690 Enduro R than with my 790 Adventure r. Every time there is something negative to say or problem with any bike, people scream and shout on the internett about how bad it is, how poor quality it has and how they rather go for another brand that are so much more reliable. And the worst part is, All the brand haters jumps on the train and make the same noice. My experience is that if you look a little bit closer, look at the usage and understand what it takes to make a product like this. there is nothing black and white. There are just alot of gray scale. I do, and really understand the frustration from people who has any faults, or dont get proper service or customer rights served to them. But you have to agree we get colored way to much of the negative reviews online? The shocks on this bike can fail, like the front telehever on my GSA did, well, i do understand it sucks when you are in the middle of a trip, but it can happend with every bike. And to be fair, if you wright down the numbers, if you see how many bikes sold, how many issues it has compared to other bikes or bikes in general. I think you will see a much more equal picture of this. And I say this with love and respect. Thank you for the reply and insight to the matter. I'm not just sure i agree with you mate 😊

I agree with Thomas, not because I am also German. This model has been on the market for a while, so feedback is conclusive. I have researched German / English speaking forums and found similar opinions, the list is long. All bikes may have problems, sometimes you get unlucky, can happen with every item we purchase. But the relative % of people complaining is higher than usual even some KTM Dealers are pissed. My heart was set on T7 but once the price of 790 dropped in Germany to around 11-12K, I seriously started considering it. The bike is excellent. But some of the problems described go back to other models too. Somehow leakage is always a problem with KTM. Also, it seems that the early models where assembled in Austria, the rest is being assembled in China. As Corona has crossed all my plans, I still have time to wait, hoping for prices to further drop. I will test ride it. However, I really don't like the design with lower tanks. Again, this is a great bike and I am happy that you have been enjoying it so far. Be safe!

Glad to see you still love your bike. I started watching your videos while waiting for mine to show up. I had leakage on my front brake reservoir too. I disassembled it, cleaned all parts really well and no leaks since then. I've got nearly 13,000 miles on mine, but our riding season is longer here in Northern California. My bike has had zero issues so far. Yes a loose bolt here and there, but what do you expect if you ride in the dirt? The 790R makes me smile as well. Especially when it had taken me somewhere amazing! Cheers

The wired part, it was leaking, and it go away after i put on a new gasket and the power part lid, but now it is back some how. Maybe some dirt has collected or something. I read something online about the original lid was to tight from fabric? Glad to hear your bike has minor issues and you love it as well 👏🏻Stay safe mate, cheers

Brilliant video Thomas! I'm looking forward to putting the kilometers on my bike to do the 15k service. Sadly the 2020 season ended for me and my bike this tuesday on my commute to work when a car decided to give way to the car in front of me, but not me, in an intersection and smashed into my bikes left side. In the crash I broke my left clavicle and split my left scapula, the bike seems to have mostly scratched and broken plastics, but it's still getting looked over in my local shop. Looking forward to the 2021 season! Be safe on your adventures, and don't trust cars even if they stop for cars you have in front of you! Keep the great videos coming, they keep me sane during my and my bikes repairs. :D

You can go on any forum on any bike and find poor reviews. It is mostly people that don't own the bike and have probably not even ridden one. I own a 790 R and have had no problem so far. I might have a problem down the road but every bike I have ever owned has had a problem or two. People love to bash on other motorcycles that they don't own to try to justify the bike they do own. This bike is an amazing off road and on road machine. I love all motorcycles. I think most manufacturers make a good product. Don't listen to people saying this machine sucks! If you want one get one. You will not be disappointed.

Once again Thomas, another cool vid presented without hype nor bullsh#t. There is so much negativity bandied around the interwebs for all of the 790's faults... Me, just a bit of an oil dribble from the countershaft shaft... At 15,000kms, no front / rear brake issues to date (will have rear brake recall done at the next service). Otherwise, like you, the 790R is my 'jack of all trades'. Makes me smile every time ride off and every time I pull up and shutdown the engine... This bike has loads of character and hopefully will prove long term to be the 'game changer' it was pitched to be... So far, for me. It is :)

It's a great bike, on and off road, only time will tell, but so far I'm very happy with it.I had the first service, but then I changed the oil with 5000 miles I'm not going to go 9,300 miles for an oil change! Love my R! The only issue I've had in 2,000 miles was faulty brake switches which left my brake light stuck on and cruise control inoperative. Fixed under warranty of course. I also have a highly modded DR650 and with the engine and suspension mods the performance is close to a T7 due to an equal power to weight ratio. The 790 R OTOH is a massive performance upgrade! The rocket booster engine is awesome as is the electronics suite and suspension! I'm so spoiled now because it is my 'Unicorn' and there is nothing better on the market so can't upgrade to anything, I'm already at the top of the mountain!

Have the 790 Adv R and had great plans before Covid and a return to school for re-purposing 🤨. Still, have been out on some back trail day rides and I find it beautiful. I’m not a great off road rider. Had street bikes for 15 years in the 80’s and 90’s then nada for 20 plus. Hopped on a Honda 2017 CRF 250 L Rally to get my feet wet with country roads and enjoyed it. But Canada 🇨🇦 is a lot of straight highway to curvy backroads so more power was needed and this bike fits the need. Issues at first: gas cock locks were not set properly between tanks and ran out of gas early. There are quick tutorials on KZread about them. Brake line was changed under warranty at 1000 km check up. All good there. No big mods yet but after the initial 1k service this bike came to life. It has a ton of manageable power, and is actually easier to maneuver on gravel roads than the 250. The lower gas tank cannot be underestimated. As mentioned, pretty busy to make big trips but even the shorter in town,on tarmac, trips are pleasurable. Had a bit of a rad leak, easily fixed with turn of screw. No oil probs as of yet. But, didn’t buy the KTM because it was dependable 24/7. I wanted iconic. I wanted personality. It delivers in spades. The Honda was indestructible and low maintenance but... dull. Great qualities if it is transportation, less so in the “FUN” department. Being in my 50’s I have different experiences and expectations than my 20’s. Not for everyone this bike. But I am loving it.

Hello tshansen, I am very much enjoying your Content. Thank you for producing it. I have a 790 ADV R as well with 17000km and it astonished me to hear that you have the exact same Issue with your Brakes as I do. Together with my Dealer here in Zürich we have changed the Discs in the Front but that only helped for about 1500 km. If I am honest i sort of feel that the Wheelcenter might be bent because the Rim is moving sidewise as the same time as the Brakedisc makes a noise as i am turning the front Wheel while lifted. But my Dealer tells me this is normal and expected of a 21 Inch wheel and doesnt feel like doing anymore about it under Warranty - but I can SEE the Rim going sideways like on an old broken Bycicle while Riding!!! It brakes really terrible - especially in the City at lower Speeds. So annoying - The 790 ADV R is otherwise my favorite Bike I have ever owned but I am almost ready to give up and "downgrade" to a lower powered 700 Tenere. Have you had more Luck fixing your 790? Can it even be the center of the Wheel? In that case the KTM supposedly tougher Powerparts Wheels could be a fix. Here in Switzerland it is not legal to change Disc or Brake Rotor to a different manufacturer so I am stuck with those mounted on the 790. Changing to the KTM Powerparts wheel would be the only Legal upgrade i could make - but the thought of Buying the Wheel and another set of new Galfer Discs without knowing it would even make a difference makes me rather want to run to a Yamaha dealer... ... but sell him a Bike that brakes like this is just wrong. So you see - I am sort of Stuck :-D I am Sorry about the long Comment. Thank you for your Time if you managed to read it all. Sincerely Björn

Hi and thanks for your comments on the bike! Glad to hear that you are happy with your bike! I didn't quite understand the issue that you had with your front brake. Could you possibly tell me more about it? I have had my front brake fail weirdly 3 times on my last trip where the lever would feel super hard as if it was stuck and when I pulled harder (almost panicing..) it suddenly got soft again and abs kicked in very briefly. I am very happy with my bike as well (20.000km in little over a year now) and did everything with it so far from jumping logs on single trails to racing street bikes in the alps. But I have to admit that I have had A LOT of issues so far... all under warranty mind you but still very annoying since I had to bring it to the dealer maybe 6 or 7 times already. I'm not sure if I will keep it after warranty runs out... display got replaced twice and still fogs up inside when it's below 15°C, rear shock failed at 12.000km, rear brake line, tank sensor failed at 9.000km, I get the "key error" when switching the engine off with the button on the handlebar from time to time and more minor issues. Also many parts I ordered with my bike were delivered 3-6 months delayed (foam air filter, race seat, carbon tank guards). I fear this bike will not age well. Too bad, since I absolutely love it.

The issue i had and still have with my front brake is that is take uneaven when you brake at low speed. almost like it only apply on every half turn? So when we measured the brake disc they where out of spec. So it feels like the brake laggs when you apply gentle force (notice it alot in low speed) In higher speeds there is not a noticable difference. The display is a ongoing issue with most brands, and mine has been changed one time, but we wont change it again before there is a fix. Sad to hear you had so much errors with your bike. And glad to hear you got it all replaced under warranty. The Power parts can take ages to get from KTM. I dont know why it is. Something takes 2 days, others take 2-3 months. It is crazy, and i'm not sure why it is like this. I can live with the small and minor errors on my bike. the bike performs so well in all aspects that i can't see any other bike (yet) that can replace it. Cheers

Without the electronics and extra horsepower. So for me the choice was easy. The 690 is an amazing bike, but it is just to little or hard to ride on longer adventures for my liking. The brake line, is that a problem? same with the radiator leak? just two clamps you need to tighten a little extra both are in reach without taking of the fairings. The rough start on the other hand, i see as a problem. Not fun and should be sorted out with the shop you buy it. Did the touring screen help you in any way? I'm so tall i have no problem with turbulens. I have no heat shield for the shock. every shock that is affected or defect is after very low milage and it also happend with bikes with the heat shield mounted. So i think there is some defect shocks from fabric.

Thomas Hansen brake line recall. Yeah I consider that a problem. Faulty materials. You press the rear brake and the rear brake doesn’t work because the brake line expands so the pressure isn’t delivered correctly. I’d say that’s a problem. Radiator leaking not hose clamps yeah I consider that a problem also(fixed under warranty). As far as the shock I don’t really care, I figure for the cheap price of 80 bucks that the shield cost me I’ll put it on. No harm no foul. The I’m 6’2” and the puig windscreen is a 300% upgrade from the stock screen at higher highways speeds. Hmmm. I want to love it. I have a 2018 BMW R1200GSA and a 2019 F850GSA. I am going on a ride from South Florida to Cape Town, South Africa when this virus is over. My F850GSA is amazing... I took it on a trip from Miami to Thailand last year and it did great. But I need to shed weight -- so the KTM is an option. Biggest issue -- Biggest, biggest issue... When I travel the world on a motorcycle -- 90% of the time, adventure riders ride BMW's -- 5% ride KTM. Why? Because BMW's never break -- they are reliable. KTM's always have horror stories. If I am going to be in the middle of Africa somewhere -- I need to know the bike is not going to be a liability. So if I knew more, and felt like the KTM 790 was bulletproof -- I would get one. But I hear so much confusion that its not an easy decision... you are positive -- but so many are negative. I wish I know the right answer... KTM needs to up the reliability game and ensure adventure riders in remote places won't have something else to think about for safety other than common sense. Thanks. Love your videos.

I guess you did not see all the bmw’s with the break in half front or ruined drive shaft? BMW are crazy comfortable! And i see why it is a solid choice! If you take a look at the guys running dakar rallys or huge trips like this! Why are there no BMW? I dont have the answers, i just have a different view on it! There is one thing with BMW, there are parts for it everywhere! If you take a close look at bmw’s history, you can see alot of faulty bikes, just like other brands! To think a BMW never break is a huge mistake mate😉 trust me! I have owned one

@@tshansen Hi Thomas. I totally respect your opinion -- and that is why I am trying to learn. My comments were only based on the facts that I have experienced -- nothing more. I have rode around the world in remote places on virtually every continent. 2 years ago I went from the very top of Columbia, South America to the very bottom, Ushuaia, Argentina on a 5 month ride. I am absolutely not brand loyal -- not at all. I only want the tool that is best for me -- KTM, BMW, Yamaha... Don't care. For South America or just crossing the USA Miami to Los Angeles or Canada, nothing is better than a R1200/R1250 for comfort and its a beast. For Miami to Thailand, it needed 60% off-road 40% pavement so F850GSA worked fine but its pretty heavy for some off-road ventures when I drop it and have to deal with that. For Miami to Cape Town, that is real important to ride a light bike -- I plan on 80% off-road and 20% asphalt once in Africa. So the KTM is light. But it's only a matter of fact -- nothing more -- 90% of world travelers are on BMW's. I have passed some KTM's in my years on the road in remote regions -- but many actually do have issues. I am not crapping on KTM at all... Just the fact as I have witnessed. But I was hoping that KTM is better now and why I am watching 790 videos.... Trying to learn if they are reliable because when in the middle of Central Africa, I really don't want any issues... That's all... Thanks for your comment... It's how I learn. Glad to see that you really believe in the 790 for reliability... I will keep watching. The virus is holding me back and hope to get on with this as soon as possible.

Sounds like you have been doing some serious riding mate? I’m by no mean Brand loyal my self. I only pick the bike that are best for me and my driving at any given time 🔥 but do you think BMW are so much more reliable or do you think Long way around had something to do with everyone riding a BMW 🤣 i’m not sure, i just feel there is issues with every brands. BMW win’s on comfort any day of the week, i can second that. If you look at guys like rtwpaul who ride around the world on his ktm 500 you will Always find story’s like this. And i’m not getting close to any adventurs like this for myself. I represent more of the avarage joe who like adv riding and go on smaller adventures. So what would i pick if i had the chance to go on a 6 months adventure from north to south. To be honest, i would pick my 790 and do the best of it 🙈

Hi Thomas. Just driven my KTM 790 Adventure s 2.900 km and the rear suspension is ruined. No suspension in it more and I have not ridden my bike hard, no jumpings or anything hardcore like they say it can handle. I’m getting a new suspension from the KTM dealer but I’m not happy with the reliability of this bike. I just hope there won’t be any more problems.

I heard some has issues with the rear suspension. And i do feel with you, but it was the same with the front suspension on my BMW R1200 GSA.... it was somehow broken from the factory, just took some time before i got the leakage and got it replaced on warranty. Most people dont have any problems with the bike mate 😊

Thomas Hansen, I know that every bike make can fail. Nothing is perfect. I have rented a 1250 gs for three days and it is the best bike I have ever ridden. But I also read that the reliability of BMW bikes is very poor only the Italian makes are worse. So I’m not so sure that the right thing would be to shift over to BMW. I really hate unreliable machines wether cars or motorbikes.

If you pay 14000 Euros for a bike the first 15000 km should be absolutely flawless! Everything else is unacceptable! Unfortunately this is seldom the case when you buying a KTM. Love the brand and the bikes but KTM have had me really disappointed over quality and customer service over the last 20 years. The problems for quite a few 790 owners should get the attention of the riding community or else KTM won’t do anything about it.

I'm not sure how to answer that. If you look to other brands, maybe in the car industry, where you pay 4 x 5 times as much for a vehicle. still with even more errors and flaws across the board. Minor flaws are ok in my opinion 😊
