Beautifully said good sir. I feel one of the biggest gift's of Life as a human animal is the multitude of other animal's we can observe or have a connection with!

Hercules is a wonderful baby. He wouldn't survive in the wild. Many healthy animals don't survive there. Raccoons love people. I speak from experience and many of them do NOT live in the WILD, per se. Many of them are city fauna and are not well provided for. This little guy is living in raccoon heaven.

Hercules can not be rehabilitated back into the wild as he would miss you all very much and would be heart broken. He would be wondering why after giving him all the love and companionship you would suddenly take all that away. Please don’t let go of him.

I love when people give animals IRONIC names, like Hercules for a little raccoon. I knew a huge dog who was named Tiny. I wonder what folks mean when they call me Genius?!?

I had a cat called Nössö (like wussy, but cuter), she wasnt afraid of anything and liked to go for walks. Exceptionally smart cat, only vacuum was too much. Now we have Onni (happiness, bliss, also Finnish male name), he is orange boi, so the name is very fitting for him, less for us. He knows what the word no means, he just doesnt care and he is unbelievably stubborn. My friend had a dog called Löysä (loose, lax), he was the epitome of high-strung. Medium sized dog who needed to be carried, when wind made leaves flutter around. Oh, and childhood friend had pet snail called Gigantor.

We need more people like you ❤

"I didn't expect a dog and a raccoon to get along" I mean, they're both very social creatures, I'm sure it'd work out to some degree with the proper pup and a raccoon that had been... I don't know what you'd call it, 'socialized?' With species other than raccoons.

When I was a kid, we rehabbed a baby raccoon. We got him before his eyes opened. He and the dog were total partners in crime. Raccoon was the mastermind, he had to pay off the dog in treats to keep the dog quiet. No exaggeration. Raccoon returned to the wild at maturity. Dog shed her raccoon pounds.

It’s funny, cause everyone says raccoons are so “cat-like”, but they’re actually closer to the wolf and dog (canid) side of the Carnivora order… along with sea lions, seals, walrus, bears, red pandas, all the Mustelidae (otters, weasels, badgers, etc), all their fellow Procyonids (kinkajous, coatis, ringtails), plus all the canines :-) so this pairing does make some sense actually.

Glad things worked out well for all. Sweet story. Precious animals.

A. There are vaccinations for rabies just like for dogs. Animals don’t get rabies from hanging out in a living room. B. There is a more dangerous problem with raccoons-that is raccoon round worms. Two wildlife workers/vets die each year from them. They cause that wobbling as well as the brain disorder. But she did say he had vet care which meant he had his shots. My mother had raccoons that people found orphaned or decided they weren’t the pet they saw in the movies.
