Racing Lines explained

What are racing lines and how do they make you faster? Why is the racing line not as simple as the shortest, fastest or easiest path through a turn? What is the karting line? What does it mean to take a late apex? Let's explore!

  • @velkoivanov9155

    @velkoivanov9155

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@nothingrealy905 If I was to take the question seriously - it's because when drifting, your grip is considerably lower so your speed trough the corner is much lower than what's possible otherwise. "Braking and losing speed" is done from the much higher speed on the straight down to the speed that you need to take the corner, which is still higher than what you would have if drifting. Drifting is a perfectly valid way to have fun, but it's not fast

    Exit speed depends of corner speed. With late apex you have much more low corner speed then exit speed after corner. With late apex you will always spend more lap time than with neutral apex and trail braking.

    weighted averaging can probably be used to quantify the importance of exist speed for a turn. also though there is probably a theoretical minimum time strategy for any course, you don't necessarily need that, or even want it, you want the maximum time strategy which is the lowest time of all parties in the race, thus minimizing stresses on the car and tires.

    That is very interesting question, nobody dares ask apparently?? Can bunch of math and software find optimum curve through course? Then top racecar driver is the best driver at driving that line, note, knowing the optimal path isn't necessary the same as driving the optimal path.

  • @marshalcraft

    @marshalcraft

    5 жыл бұрын

    I don't know myself, but i think this is done in f1 driving. It's complex but I bet team's do use computers and 3d model of track and solve for an optimal time, given mathematical model's of cars turnign, breaking, accelerating capabilities. Then it's a matter of getting a driver who can best follow the results here. Also dealing with competition may be too dynamic to benefit from this. So that plays a role.

  • @marshalcraft

    @marshalcraft

    Also indy car is different too, usually F1 drivers do very well in indy car and I think in indy, they don't do this as much and just let the driver figure it out. But then Indy car drivers do follow some interesting practices, like coming off the wall on straits as apparently air pressure is higher over there on brickyard?

    Holy shit dude I found your video on Reddit, didn't expect it would go so in depth, I underestimated you from the start and god you proved me wrong! Didn't think you would be able to say that much CLEARLY in less than 10 minutes! I wish you good luck, you got a new subscriber and keep throwing that kind of content!

    You're the best KZreadr Chain Bear, Hey, I have a question, what software do you use to make your videos? I ask this question because I need to make a video for History class, and I would like to use your software. It so cool. I am a subscriber for over 2 months now and your videos continue to fascinate me. Your videos are the best and explain the best how things work. It does not matter if you don't want me to use the software, I won't take it personally. I still will love your KZread channel and it's content.

    I really want to know why is there such a big difference between an ideal Quali car setup and an ideal Race car setup. How does that fuel weight effect a nicely balanced "empty" car

    In qualifying, you can get away with a more unstable car because you only need to handle it for a lap; if you slide around a bit while the car twitches through a corner, that's ok... But over the course of a full race, you may not want to abuse the tires as much, and the driver may not feel as confident with the car over the race or stint length, and it may actually be quicker to have a slightly slower but more stable car; what is the point of having a car that can be potentially 0.5 sec quicker, but the driver only feels comfortable driving it 1 sec off its ultimate limit? Better to have that car that the driver can trust for the whole race, and be 0.5 slower than the others potential, but 0.5 quicker than what the driver can accomplish over a full race.

    From someone who has been racing cars, motorcycles, rally, motocross, downhill, and working as a professional test-driver, for the past 20 years: lines (and proper braking techniques) will make or break you. Ive been doing this stuff for longer than i can remember, and i still learn something new EVERY SINGLE TIME i go racing, no exception. It is SUCH a complicated topic, nearly unexplainable...

    I feel so smart lol! ‘Tell you why! I turned my autopilot on at 30mph on a one-way road with a lot of curves (40mph speed limit), and wanted to prove that I was gonna be able to catch the car in front just by taking racing lines before the road ended! The road is about 4 miles long; YES, it worked! I know there are a lot of variables like the speed of the car in front and all of that, but I’ve tried it a couple of times more and still catch the car in front! I love cars!... and science! :)
