24:56 Pre-Qualifying Results
From Maurice Hamilton, Autocourse:
"As if things were not difficult enough for the unfortunate 'second-class citizens' of the paddock, the organizers took it upon themselves to wash part of the track shortly before pre=qualifying began. Indeed, they chose to hose down the very fast section from the top of the hairpin to the new pits. Thus the unlucky 13 took to the track with rain tires fitted, even though 60 percent of the circuit was bone dry.
Not surprisingly, the quick times were established towards the end of the session and it was then that Gregor Foitek chose to have a major accident in the fast curves just beyond the old pits. Foitek emerged unhurt but his accident had sprayed mud and debris everywhere. At this point, Martin Brundle was fourth fastest and a qualifier despite having been forced to switch to the spare car when his engine failed. The spare was set up for Modena and Brundle was far from comfortable. But at least he had made it and Foitek's accident seemed to settle the issue.

Then Alex Caffi produced one very quick lap in the midst of the chaos and Brundle was out. And, to make matters worse, or better, depending on your point of view, Modena was the quickest. Larini, reveling in a new chassis which he felt proved his theory that the old car had never been the same following his shunt at Imola, was second quickest ahead of Johansson. Stefan made the most of a car which was far from perfect and a track which was far from easy - as Foitek would prove. Indeed, the accident came at the worst possible moment for Bertrand Gachot, who was in the middle of a flying lap on qualifying tires when he came across the unconventionally parked Euro Brun moments after it had come to rest.
Aguri Suzuki had clouted the wall with his Zakspeed, while Bernd Schneider suffered from clutch trouble. Elsewhere, the nose cone on Winkelhock's AGS was dragging on the ground, while the nose actually fell of Weidler's Rial. Not that it made much difference to either driver, since they were not remotely on the pace."

39 cars, free access to the paddock, Broken Wings... How lucky the guys who were able to witness it were. F1 nowadays is a boring and soulless party for the ultrarich.

This is a joy to watch. Total antithesis of the sterile and clinical show that F1 is today. Cars that look like cars and mechanics in denims 😂

This footage is incredible. A real historical document of an era of F1 which will never be repeated. When any reasonably proficient junior formula team could build a basic chassis, strap a Cosworth or a Judd to it and attempt to qualify for a world championship race.

It’s crazy when you consider there were 13 drivers in this pre-qualifying session. That’s 65% of today’s grid!!!

Same here. I loved watching the races from Adelaide on TV. Fun circuit and seems like a beautiful city.
And for those who don’t know, prequalifying sessions were held at 8 am.
Amazing stuff. Nicola Larini made a fantastic race with the Osella at Canada under a pouring rain. He started on P15 and he was on P3 for more than ten laps until his Ford Cosworth engine got broken on lap 33.

Nicola Larini was seriously underrated. He moved around a lot. It would have been nice to see him get multiple seasons at someplace like Jordan or Tyrrell. He would have surprised some people.

У Никола Ларини был свой шанс в Имоле 1994 и он его не упустил. К сожалению, это был черный уикенд
Wow.. fantastic video. Amazing sounds on the pit straight. Everyone loved an underdog, and here were a whole qualifying session of them! Drivers and teams. All legends in my eyes, and part of my childhood watching them all and hoping they'd qualify.. to make it to a Sunday grid was like a victory.

The Unsung Heroes of Prequalifying : Respect: Real Men
It's a great pity we won't see anything like this for a while in F1. There is a case for a separate second division F1 championship - these guys could've had a separate race before the proper F1 so their weekend wasn't entirely wasted. Or they could have taken then hillclimbing or put them in head to head races like at the Bologna Motor Show or something. Lovely footage, thank you for sharing this!

Sadly now days unless you have a grandstand ticket at this track your viewing access is very restricted. These days you could never get the shots where most of this was filmed.

I was there! And by that I mean I was born and living in Montreal at the time, 3 months old and miles away from the race. But in spirit, I was there.

I grew up with late 70s 80s and 90s F1. I have been watching many different F1 videos over the last few years from these times And I continually see the same comments over and over, the gist of which are……..F1 used to be incredible and now it sux! My sentiments exactly.

Haha I wasn’t sure where you were going with your comment, but I like where you ended up!
Priceless footage. One now realizes why these micro teams no longer exist and that's due to tobacco money having disappeared. A majority of the drivers were sponsored by Marlboro and those who weren't were sponsored by Camel, Barclays or West.

You pack up 1 or 2 cars, have them flown from your team base in Europe to Montréal, drivers, crew and equipment all flown over. And then boom, it's 9 am on Friday morning and your weekend is over. Interesting to see every car is running a V8, I assume in the first year after the turbo ban there were not a ton of options outside of the Cossie. I prefer the engine variety of your 1992 video, but all your videos are great. Thanks!

Larrousse ran the V12 Lambo but they dropped into prequalifying after this race. I believe the first "customer" non V8 was the Minardi Ferrari from 1991.
Wow finally I got to listen the Yamaha V8 sound, it was pretty much near impossible to find. Great capture

Strange to see names like Johanson, Brundle and Larini in this group.
They should have done a sprint race on Saturday for the non qualifiers, at least for them to get some race experience, everyone would gained on that.
