Amazing and rare footage back in the days of 40 entries and 26 car grids. This is what F1 was all about, the privateers gave life to this sport. Now you need 1/2 a billion manufacturer dollars to complete a season and not win a race. Next year will be lucky to have 16 cars on the grid. Sad.

Lovely video. The first few years of the 3.5L normally-aspirated era are probably my favorite in the history of Formula 1. As others have said, the sheer number of teams competing (or at least just showing up), the variety in engine makes, and DEFINITELY the most beautiful F1 cars of all time were all from 1989-1991, IMO. The wail of that Lamborghini V12 in the Lola-Larousse cars is glorious! Thanks for sharing.

I love this era of F1. To me it's a shame privateers cannot afford to compete nowadays. I often wonder if they could run a formula 1.5 championship parallel to regular formula 1 with a tight budget cap and a simpler drive train. The top constructor would win enough prize money to compete in f1 the next season while the lowest f1 team would be relegated to f1.5.

Wow what amazing footage! There can't be many videos where you actually hear the engines of the Coloni-Subaru or the Life due to their limited running! Was that the Life engine you could hear actually running right at the beginning of this video? I've never been able to find any footage of it in action on track, as it didn't do many laps! I feel for the driver just sitting in the cockpit as he was waiting so patiently and probably didn't even get one lap on track due to the car being so unreliable and underdeveloped. This captures perfectly the essence of F1 at the time, with these small teams having to endure pre-qualifying to even have a shot of making the grid. It's also fabulous that you could get so close to the action, I mean right in the middle of it! Priceless footage. Thanks and I'm working my way through your brilliant uploads. I was 12 at the time of this particular video and Senna was my hero. I'm British and Mansell was awesome too, but I was always McLaren-Honda / Senna fan at heart.

I have more videos to upload, and saving some of the best for last 😊. As far as being close to the action, I went in 1989 & 1990 with press credentials. How I got those credentials is another story 😂. Thanks again for the comments, I enjoy reading them.

@@robhurley5258 @15:12 you can hear that asthmatic Life engine wheezing up the straight and it just looks so slow compared to the others. But wonderful to hear and see this utter obscurity running "in anger". I was surprised when I Googled to see that Bruno Giacomelli in the Life managed 7 laps in this session before the engine predictably expired. I cross-checked this against my Murray Walker 1991 season review book and he also wrote the same. Sounds like an intriguing story as to how you got your press credentials! But, very fortunate that you did have them in order to film these rare and special moments. Yes, Senna did indeed have a special mystique and aura about him. I am still fascinated and in awe of him to this very day. It is fabulous to see the unsung heroes from further down the grid in these pre-qualifying videos.

Wow, this is amazing and I have so many questions. Did you get to speak with any of the drivers, if so what did you ask them and did they seem happy with their position in the sport having to prequalify and sometimes failing to? Did the Life actually manage to complete a lap that day? I really like the personality in F1 back then, every driver had their own unique helmet design, and these designs aren't overly flashy like today's helmets, they have identifiyable shapes and colours and their names etc. The team liveries are creative and look wonderful. Could you feel the heat of the cars as they came back into the pits? For example the tires and engines must've been very hot after being in full prequalifying mode, or was the heat not as extreme as it is now? Did the team personnel seem frustrated after their driver failed to prequalify? Which teams seemed the most prepared and organized out of all of them and which teams seemed less prepared and organized teams? (excluding life because they were easily the most unprepared). Your experience and content is priceless and I'm sure you know you are very lucky to have seen this mysterious era of F1 so up close. Thank you!

Thanks, and you certainly ask a lot of questions! I’ll answer your questions, best I can 😊. I never really talked to the drivers as they always seemed very focused. PQ was only 30 minutes, so not a lot of time to chat. I think the Life actually DID complete a lap or two, although quite slower than the rest. One of the mechanics actually commented on this video, really nice guy, and just happy to be part of the circus. Great comment on the helmets! For the most part they never changed, even as drivers switched teams. It became their signature so to speak. I’m not a fan at all of today’s helmets. The exhausts certainly were hot, but only if you got REALLY close. What I remember most though, other than the site and speed, was the sound and smell. The sound was incredibly loud - so much so that you couldn’t sit in the grandstands without ear plugs. It was ear piercing like a wall of sound. I’ll upload some future videos that show the sound causing ripples in the tape as I was video taping with my camcorder. The smells were an intoxicating mix of exhaust fumes, tire rubber, brakes, oil, and exotic blends of fuel. Teams like Brabham were the most prepared and made it through PQ pretty easily. You know, I really was lucky to have been there during that period of F1. Thankfully, I knew it and appreciated it at the time that I was watching some of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport at a high point in the sports history. Stay tuned, I have a lot more F1 to upload…

Pre-qualifying, aka the sessions of shame. What an era though, where you could build a tub, hook a Ford customer engine in the back, and if there was rain, somehow compete with the big dogs. Some of these were complete jokes though. I mean, 22 seconds a lap slower? Even 2 seconds slower than the best of the already slow cars is ludicrous. Senna's pole that year was 1:20.399...

3 seconds off the car in front, but a massive 20 seconds off actually getting through to qualifying, And a massive 30 seconds off pole position time. To put it into perspective, if he and Senna set off at the same time, Senna would be lapping him near the end of the 3rd lap.

They support LH's «diversity» talk, but keep adding races in the middle east, where you can be stoned to death for being gay. They let him display BLM stuff, when BLM is at best an anarchist movement, at worst a terrorist one. They want to reduce their carbon footprint, but implement sprint races. And now a race in Saudi Arabia is in the cards, and Aramco sponsored - of all things - a GP held in TEXAS? It's one thing to be cash hungry, but F1 is becoming a big joke.
