Rachmaninoff Paraphrasing Bach : Violin Partita No. 3 for piano - Lugansky

Музыка

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
Sergey Rachmaninoff (1873-1943)
Suite from the Violin Partita in E major: Prelude, Gavotte & Gigue, transcription for piano after J. S. Bach, BWV 1006 (1720; 1933)
Nikolai Lugansky, 2021
Moscow Philharmonic Society
[0:00] I. Preludio (Non allegro)
[3:35] III. Gavotte
[6:30] VII. Gigue
“With a few exceptions, Rachmaninov was generally quite faithful to the source music of his transcriptions. In this Bach effort, however, he added contrapuntal parts and harmonies because the original was written for solo violin. Yet the music has a mostly Bachian flavor and some have surmised that Bach himself would have made very similar modifications had he fashioned a keyboard version. That said, there are more than a few snippets of Rachmaninov's voice in this effort, especially in the opening prelude where there are echoes in the contrapuntal writing of some of the Etudes-Tableaux and the first movement of a work to come in 1940, the Symphonic Dances. “

Starting at 2:48, Rachmaninoff weaves in a theme from the second movement of Bach's Double Violin Concerto. Amazing arrangement, and amazing performance!

Stunning genius. Rachmaninoff was clearly one of the greatest 20th century composer/musicians. Lugansky is more than brilliant.

Rachmaninoff was s great pianist-composer indeed. He was well balanced between both areas. I’d like to present a couple of Finnish pianist-composers from Finland who lived at the same era: Selim Palmgren (1878-1951) and Ilmari Hannikainen (1892-1955). Please familiarize yourself with their works, there are absolute gems!

"With a few exceptions, Rachmaninov was generally quite faithful to the source music of his transcriptions. In this Bach effort, however, he added contrapuntal parts and harmonies because the original was written for solo violin." Yes he did indeed, as he did with the piano-solo transcriptions of several of his own songs which here and there are remarkably different from the original version for voice and piano. Moreover, Mr. Cummings may have overlooked the fact, that JSB himself pre-used the Prélude in the Sinfonia of his Cantata BWV 29 in D-major (which is most often heard in its adaptation by Marcel Dupré as a popular encore piece for organists). Considering the striking similarity in harmonization, Rachmaninov most probably knew this Sinfonia, which must have inspired him to adapt it for the piano, together with the "Gavotte en Rondeau" and the "Gigue" from the same Partita, here and there spicing them with some harmonic eye-blinks to his great predecessor which is Johann Sebastian Bach ... The result is what you hear here: BACHMANINOV !!

After being completely enamored with Trifonovs version, and listening to it at least 25 times, (really) I happened on Mr Lugankys' version. Honestly, Rachmaninoff's own recording is quite fast, and this one flows in a very lovely way. In fact not paying attention to every musical detail ( TRIFONOV, admirable and beautiful though it is ) I found this a relief and like a fast moving stream and find it not as precious as Danils'. BRAVO Mr Lugansky

Because it's already been composed! In the 1950s Rakh was roundly condemned as being a romantic reactionary 'crying at the feet of Tchaikovsky'. Even Prokifiev criticised him for being old-fashioned when he played a piece at Scriabin's funeral. There's plenty of Rachmaninov's compositions to listen to for a lifetime.

@@Gerhold102 "Music is enough for a Lifetime, however a Lifetime is not enough for Music" ... Unlike many composers who are supposed to be "superior" and "more important" than Rachmaninov, he is forever immortalized by his magnificent music, just as his great predecessor Johann Sebastian Bach for one simple reason: like Rachmaninov, also Bach was considered "old-fashioned" by his contemporaries ... Those who judged, still judge and will judge composers for their "modernity" and "revolutionarity" instead of for the content and quality of their music will ultimately be silenced until no one will even remember their names and words ... Soli Deo Gloria !!!

This piece (only the prelude) is also used by Bach as a symphony (introduction) to the cantata BWV 29 written for solo organ and orchestra, Rachmaninov probably also based his arrangement on this version (which in the cantata is in D major) .
