Racewalking - Basics

Спорт

A simple first lesson on the technique used in racewalking. The coach does not explain the rules since this tends to inhibit beginners. Instead, they teach correct form. If the technique is acquired correctly, the athletes will be within the rules during races.

This is helpful. I am 73 and racewalked on and off since the late '70s. The focus here on the upper body is good because you can't move your legs any faster than you move your arms, and the fact is that often the upper body is what tires first if you have bad form. Walking both feet along the line increases hip rotation and thus stride length. Speed is a function of stride length and steps per minute.

Thanks for the video. Good instruction. These two learners know what they are doing. The coach didn't say anything about pushing off the back toe.

One thing I have been noticing in the RW videos is how he is using the line they are walking on for foot placement. There is something about keeping the inside of your feet along the same line axis. This is definitely different than speed walking where you use your natural gate to propel you (sometimes with the feet wider than closer) - I found this post very helpful.

I used these techniques to race walk this morning. My calves are on fire but I love not pounding my joints. I did four short sessions but I am determined to conquer this thing.

Ian Wheatley, Thanks for the video, I’ve adopted your method for my daily walk. Just wondering the significance of having “....hand closed and thumb on top...”, 0:47 ?

If your hand is open, it will tend to flop around. This inconsistency of position between arm swings has to be counterbalanced subconsciously by tiny adjustments in the leg and foot action. This wastes energy and distracts the athlete from going full speed.

@@ianwhatley7310 Thanks for reply. You may like to know that I’ve noticed that with closed hand and thumb, my focus shifts to the front of the brain just between the eyes, It feels like it’s stimulating the frontal lobe. Also it’s a great work out for the heart muscles too.

Hi Peter. If your goal is fitness, walk in the most comfortable manner you can find. This is likely to reduce stress on joints. If you are looking to compete, there are different rules for racewalking, nordic walking and power walking events. Generally the push phase of the walking gait is more efficient than pulling. It's hard to align the legs to 'pull' yourself forwards. Having a shorter step in front of the body than behind is favored by elite racewalkers. Hope this helps.

I admit they might (possibly) have had some previous exposure to racewalking, but that often happens when Mum is an international coach and Dad is an international athlete.
