Race Between two Rio Tinto 32,000 ton Iron Ore Trains, June 2017.
Running from one of Rio Tinto's iron ore mines to the port of Cape Lambert (in Western Australia) and with only around 25 kms to go, I looked in the mirror and noticed another train running in the same direction on the adjacent track and catching up to me. Both trains have 240 cars, are 2,300m long, and gross around 32,000 tons. Locos on the other train are two GE Dash 9s, and an Evo. I had two ACs. Track speed is 70 km/h and at the 19 km mark, there is a 40 km/h restriction on the other track and it's right at the bottom of a dip, going into the last uphill climb. I thought I could stay in front with only 2/3 of the other train's power but not having to slow down, but it caught and passed me going up the hill. I radioed a friend in the yard to film our arrival. Once over the hill, I ran down into the yard a little faster than usual and we pulled up at the exact same moment (me on the left of screen).

All of your videos are amazing 👏
Great video so cool seeing different railroads keep up the good work
very cool video, post more videos of this railroad, very cool, beautiful footage ...
Great video and fun to watch.
Man I would kill to have curtains in the windows of the BNSF trains I drive. I end up using binder clips or magnets to hold my safety vest in front of the window. Also is that a microwave on the opposite desk?
Take care mate! Are you guys running 40 tonne axle leadings now? I see the cars have the ore heaped up more than before, I noticed that when I saw them coming out of Yandi a few weeks ago.

As far as I know, the cars can weigh up to 144 tonnes so that's 36 t/axle.

Ah ok, when I was at the 7 Mile w/shop out of Dampier delivering some parts one of the guys said FMG are running 40T axle leadings and some of Rio’s operations are as well. I took some sleepers to BHP’s South Flank mine upgrade and the track guy supervisor said he thought BHP were looking at 40T. They definitely seem to be heaping up the ore more.
Fascinating footage David. I heard all the track switches on Rio Tinto are all standardized using #9 frogs. Is this correct to your knowledge? It looks like the highly-trafficked mainlines use movable-point frogs while the rest are solid frogs.

I don't know what a #9 frog is but I can tell you that all points on the mainline have swing-nose frogs that can be taken at 60 km/h on the diverge and 99% of points in the yard are the same although the general speed limit in yards is 35 km/h.

I know Mark very well and knew your dad just as well. It was I who borrowed his bike one weekend a few years ago. We were on a loco one day and he was telling me he wanted to buy a YamahaXS-650 and I told him I was the president of the XS-650 Club of Australia. He was stunned. I was at the funeral, sad day indeed.

@@davidrayner9832 Thanks for coming to Dad's funeral, I didn't realise you were there. You should've taken Dad's bike, Mark will only kill himself.
But aren't they autonomous now?
