For those people who don't understand, when they talked about a shotgun, it was honestly for the foxes own pain. They don't live through that, and just letting the fox go through for the sake of being "humane" is not humane at all. They were genuinely being kind.

Animal control officer here. I don't know if the fox was tested or not (probably not if it was shot in the head), but this doesn't immediately look like rabies. Rabies in predators comes off more as the drunken walk and hypersalivating, none of which I see here (the muzzle is not wet, indicating a normal amount of saliva. "Peeing everywhere" is also not a symptom. It's far more likely that there is another disease at play here- and honestly, wild animals rarely survive when symptoms are this bad, even under the care of a rehabber, so euthanasia with a firearm was still the most humane option. But don't think that this is rabies and then not notice REAL rabies signs. Rabid animals with the furious form will stumble around as if drunk and will have drool coming out in bucketloads from their mouths. Animals with the paralytic form (usually bats and woodchucks) will be lethargic, and sometimes drag around limbs as if paralyzed).

I was bitten by a dog that was almost like this poor fox when I was a kid back in 1969. The dog was captured and tested positive for rabies. I had already started the series of 15 shots in the abdomen, one every day before the dog was actually diagnosed in the lab. Those shots were very painful. I remember screaming and then the ice packs. I thank Louis Pasteur for coming up with the first rabies vaccine. Rabies is always fatal once symptoms set in.

The police are usually worthless in a case like this anyway. By the time they arrive, the animal may have moved off. I think I lot of people don’t have a good grasp of what rabies actually is so this is really a good video for people to see, even if it is a bit difficult to watch. It’s tough to overstate just how horrific rabies truly is. It’s pretty much the closest thing to a zombie virus that actually exists, 100% mortality rate and all.

Absolutely. Rabies is the most painful way an animal can die because the disease slowly eats the animal. Stage 1. Lasts 1-3 days. Behavioral changes. Stage 2. Lasts 3-4 days. The classic "furious rabies" where the animal becomes extremely aggressive and bites at anything. Typically when the disease is spread. Stage 3. Paralysis causes damage to motor neurons resulting in incoordination, rear limb paralysis, paralysis of facial and throat muscles leads to drooling and difficulty swallowing. Stage 4. Respiratory arrest basically suffocates the animal until death. If you ever see an animal with rabies and have to ability to end its life from afar, please do it. That's the most compassionate decision you can make.

You should call professionals and not take it out of his misery by yourself. The reason for that is so they will be able to investigate afterward, inform the population, check the farms. People are often getting bit by rabid animals and they don't give too much importance, as they don't realize that it's infected, as the symptoms are not always so obvious, or they can even get bit in their sleep and not realize.

A few years ago there was this park ranger who came across a bobcat that seemed to be injured, so he trapped the cat and took it to a professional wildlife rehabber who lovingly and painstakingly nursed the animal back to health over the course of several weeks. Eventually when she felt it was ready to be reintroduced into the wild, she and the ranger drove the cat way out into the woods to be released, put the crate down, backed away to a safe distance and opened the door to the crate. ...Well this bobcat just started wailing and howling like I have never heard before in my life, I mean I don't know what a bobcat is supposed to sound like exactly but this was the most bloodcurdling, unearthly screaming it literally gave me the chills. It just sat in the crate for a few seconds yowling and hissing and didn't seem like it wanted to leave, so they kind of jostled the crate with a stick and finally got it to move. The second that cat came out of the crate it was immediately obvious something was really, _really_ wrong - it was stumbling and falling over like its back legs weren't working and then instead of making a beeline towards the forest like a normal healthy bobcat would do, it ran straight towards the woman. She started screaming that it was rabid, so the ranger goes "What do I do am I gonna put it down??" and she was like _YES!_ and before she'd even had time to answer he whipped out his service pistol and shot it in the head. I know the ranger had no choice, but it was the most brutal and gruesome thing I've ever seen. The poor wildlife rehabber just stood next to this dead cat in total shock, I mean here was a woman who had spent months caring for this animal and in like a fraction of a second it'd been executed right in front of her. I guess it had been infected back when it sustained the initial injury and the symptoms of the virus had somehow developed over the course of those few weeks without anyone apparently noticing. Just the fact that at any point this cat could have attacked and bitten someone...rabies has got to be one of the single most horrific diseases on the planet, for real.

@Spicy Chickpea that was my question as well (how they didn't notice it until it was released) but as others have pointed out it's likely the hydrophobic symptoms didn't begin to manifest until right up until the end....maybe they were attempting to minimize human contact with the cat and so they didn't really get an up-close look at it? And then once they went to go put it in a crate to be transported, obviously I'm sure it seemed entirely natural that a wild animal would be distressed in that situation. Just one of those things. 💔
