I learnt this Raag in class with Khansaheb (Ali Akbar)in 1984, in discussing the mood of this Raag, he would say, "heavy like elephant", we learnt a Jhaptaal gat and 2 teentaal gats, plus lots of alaap. It's really difficult to sing this Raag, the Sarode is built for this type of raag though. The treatment of komal ga is so important, but so are the two Ni's.

No performance of a raag is perfect, but Ustadji's Mian Ki Malhar comes the closest to being just that!

मेरा सबसे प्रिय राग । उस्ताद अली अकबर ख़ान साहब की सरोद वादन की बहुत विशिष्ट शैली है। बहुत शांति है यहाँ। गुरु गंभीर भाव भी, बादलों के घुमड़ने, उमड़ने बरसने के रागजन्य भाव बहुत सुंदरता व सूक्ष्मता से उस्ताद जी ने अभिव्यक्त किये हैं। श्रद्धापूर्ण स्मरण।

I learnt three ghats in this raag from Khansaheb, one in Jhaptaal two in teen taal. His description and alaap always pointed to a feeling of heavy anticipation, so many raags are descriptive in nature. The use of Nishab and Komal nishab are so beautiful here.

very well put..esp the bit about the feeling of heavy anticipation. rarely heard it described better. .....btw it is "gats" not "ghats". ( "Ghats" are low mountains - in contrast to "parvat" - tall peaks)

Can you point me towards the recordings of these gats on KZread? There are gats of Megh, Desh Malhar and Jogiya Malhar by Ali Akbar Khan on KZread but I cannot seem to find any of Miyan ki Malhar.

@@aahirghosh1548 I haven't heard the gats I learnt on any recording, there are so many plus Khansahib would change details of his compositions from time to time. I was blessed to have had that experience.

This music is shared on KZread like platforms in good faith that there is no money being made on the labours of these great musicians by individuals who have no other role except as listeners. I absolutely agree. An ad in the beginning and in the end may still be okay but there can be nothing more jarring than ads starting to scream in the middle of this divine recording. Fortunately this has been uploaded elsewhere, without any ads - kzread.info/dash/bejne/f5uK28SvYtSrZrg.html

This precious material is made available for the small community of listeners and to bring these glorious recordings in the public. But no such channel should make money on the labour and art of these wonderful musicians. I am quite disappointed by Raga Rang for monetising this material.
