RA4 Reversal with large format cameras

In the reversal process, we use the RA4 paper to shoot directly in the large format camera and then reverse process it. I have shared more about this process in my earlier videos such as this one • Large Format - RA4 Rev...
It has been a while since I last used this process so I thought it revisited this process and at the same time shooting something that is Chinese New Year related as Chinese New Year is just around the color. So i used both my 8x10 and 4x5 cameras to shoot with RA-4 paper.
About me:
I have been doing fim photography, darkroom printing since 2003. Since then, I have also been doing alternative processes such as albumen printing, kallitype printing, wet plate and dry plate photography. My favorite cameras are the Nikon FM2 and Nikon F2 and my favorite films are Fomapan 100, Kodak Ektar, Fujifilm Velvia, Rollei Superpan. with The various genres of photography I enjoy doing are landscape photography, portrait photography,
Being new to KZread, I appreciate the works of other film photographers on youtube, such as Willem Verbeeck, Matt Day, Bigheadtaco and many more

    for this combination of filters and ISO 3 for the paper , i added one stop more. this filter combinaiton is for a sunny day but with the scene in the shaded area. usually if possible i will brackets a few shots.

    it really depends on the light of the scene you are shooting, like for shaded area on a bright day, I would use CTO + Ilford 00 + 50 Y and 50M. if it is an cloudy day, i would add more Magenta and cut down if it is a sunny day. Of course the exposure time will change so quite abit of trail and error. Over time as you shoot more you will be able to make a good guess of the filters to use and the exposure time.

    Hi there thanks for this, may I know what temperatures are your chemicals at?

  • @AnaloguePT

    @AnaloguePT

    i just used room temp which is abt 28 to 30C instead of the common 38C recommended. dev temp will affect the color balance but since singapore room temp is quite consistent throughout the year, I will control the color balance through the use of the filters instead.

    So the reversal is caused by the exposure to light when the tank is opened after the stop bath?

  • @AnaloguePT

    @AnaloguePT

    2 жыл бұрын

    The reexposure is part of the whole process. Once re-exposed, the RA4 color dev will develop the image into a positive.

    Hi There, I gave the RA-4 reversal a try. I'd hoped to have some result but in the end only see black results. I wondered if there is some hint where to look for solving. I use a test setup I measured at EV12 (iso3). With measured exposure (use a 800W Halogene spot) and after developing in fresh B&W Ilford developer (did 2 & 3 minutes with same result) I only get a very faint greyish image after (stop bath & rinse) exposing to light (standard household bulb, tried 60 and 120 seconds). When expositing for 3 stops more I can see the scene bunt no real contrast. Doubling the exposure 2, 3 and then 4 times improves a little but no big difference. The Picture with the longest exposure was developed in RA-4. At start I can see what could be the picture but it quickly ged to fill black. Used Fuji Christal Archive Matt. Any hint? Thanks

    Hi there, are you using Ilford Multigrade paper developer? Film developer is too slow for the paper. If you end results after the RA Blix is black, then it indicates underexposure or underdeveloped. After the BW developing stage, your paper should like what you see at 5:45, a flat negative but still with details.. if you get this right , the RA4 developing should give you some image.

    @@AnaloguePT Thanks. I used a fresh Gifford multigrade paper developer. What I don't understand is if I double the exposure time and keep de development the same all intermediate stage look alike. I'll get some new B&W developer to be sure it's not the chemicals.

    I assumed you are using Multigrade paper developer at 1+9. Are you also shooting outdoor with good UV light like what i did in this video? the paper sensitivity to sunlight n flashlight maybe different. If you are using a large format camera, then you can try pull out the dark slide in stages and do a test strip of maybe 0, +1 ,+2 ,+3 and+5 stops. are your Fujifilm Crystal Archive paper also fresh? I used some old expiry fuji paper before and the color was all wrong but there was still an image.

  • @AnaloguePT

    @AnaloguePT

    oh it seems like you are using a 800W Halogen light? then because the paper sensitivity maybe different to sunlight vs an artificial light so the metered value may bot be accurate. I suggest you try outdoor in daylight first to confirm the process is working.

    Are you doing any bellows extension factor on top of your meter readings?

  • @AnaloguePT

    @AnaloguePT

    2 жыл бұрын

    IIRC, the bellows extension is still within the focal length of the lesn which is 355mm so no bellows compensation was needed. i just compensated for the filters.

    @@AnaloguePT thank you! One last question, what filter pairings do you suggest for different lighting like open shade, direct Sun, mixed, etc?

  • @AnaloguePT

    @AnaloguePT

    2 жыл бұрын

    usually i take my base combinations for shade + sunlight (UV index 6)of Ilford Filter 00+CT0+50y+50M and adjust from there. If there is more shade or more clouds then add more Magenta and reduce M if there is more sun. and hopefully you can developed onsite and adjusted again. The brand/kind of paper and chemicals can also affect the color cast. It is really hard to pinpoint a set of filters to use but after some practise you will be able to have a good guess. my aim is just to reduce heavy color cast and and not achieve perfect color accuracy.

    great video! i always come back to watch this)) when i tried to do a 9x12cm ra4 positive, I saw the bw negative and then when i turned on the lights, I saw it quickly disappear and the paper turned grey and mottled. Then the paper after ra4 process was completely white. What am I doing wrong? I am developing in trays in the bathroom so brought the paper into light before removing the bw paper developer - would this affect the process? I can't seem to understand why this is happening. Thanks for your help ))

    if the final positive is white, then it meant it it was overexposed /overdeveloped. did you stop the black & white developer with a stop bath before bringing it out to light? any possibilities of lightleaks in yr 9x12camera or film holders?
