I'm an old-timer that shot film most of my life. Now that I'm 73 yrs old, my elderliness has caused me to stick with digital. Now that I have money, either format suits me fine but because of the money I've got all kinds of digital brand mistakes like 5 Hasselblad HC's up to an HC5/60 which does shoot nice stuff but it's probably more useful as a boat anchor because of its weight. But I like you best of the young guys out there on You Tube, mainly because of your humor but also because of your logic. Doesn't it make more sense to have the lighter silver stripe out when exposed and the black stripe out when not exposed yet? Duh. I could never figure it out why the opposite was adopted by the populace? Anyway, keep on keeping' on, as they say. I'd like to speak more but my arthritis restricts any more typing. Great channel Grainy!!! Oh, but one more thing, - why do you young fellas like to shoot grunge, ya know stuff like broken down old houses and cars and such. I feel like its laziness. It's simple because not one is around to bother you and it doesn't move, but, and everybody always has a big but, that kind of stuff is the most mundane and least desirable stuff to look at. How bout getting your imaginations flowing a little more and only shoot the harder stuff? I used to shoot garbage and stuff of that nature but I got out of that soon after seeing that most people, (especially women), like to look at happy things or even controversial stuff and well, you know---harder stuff. But, you're still great and keep up the cool videos.

I'm one of the oddballs who use white for exposed or empty and black for unexposed. It makes sense to me plus no one wants to borrow a film holder when they run out of their own. Yes, I thought about this ahead of time. Congratulations on your new acquisition. Handheld is more your style anyway, so I think it was a good choice. Kodak, he's taken the bait, go ahead and release that new Aerochrome in 4x5 for the poor little fella. Not 35mm or 120 yet, though. Mountain Dew still has a tanker full of that awful crap to get rid of.

I've always thought of it as white like a blank sheet of paper for unexposed, and black for exposed as if the paper has been marked on. Plus I was taught in school that that's how the holders were supposed to be used. Though it obviously really doesn't matter as long as you can keep it straight for yourself.

One solution I like is sealing unexposed ones with strips of tape. Broken seal = exposed.

Well in my head I think film is being exposed to photons hardening the silver crystals making them black. So therefore I know black is exposed and white isn't.

Well so do I, don’t know but black for unexposed and white for exposed seems more logical
All lenses made in the US post 1939 are coated. Post 1941; all lenses are hard multicoated. The purple w circle is marked for wollensak’s “wocoated” hard coating. Yellow &/Or Puple Dots are indicative of weatherisation. Purple I believe indicating low temperature grease; yellow indicating UV optical resin instead of traditional canada basalm. Kodak had a circle around an L; for “lumenised” hard coating. Furthermore, almost all Kodak Ektars from 1940 to 1970, are thorium glass.
Just completed my first home development an hour ago (it worked). Just wanted to say you're a big reason why I started shooting film in mid 2020, and it's been a fantastic ride. Thanks Jason.

A cool project could be to reach out to Graham at Graflex Parts and see if he could put back a focal plane shutter that lasts on it.

Pure cinematic gold at 10:12!
I think I’m most impressed by the 4x5 video camera you shot this episode with. Though that airstrip shot is kind of a banger
When I think "hand held 4x5" the first thing that pops into my mind is "Speed Graphic' -- in fact that's been the case since I first read "Graphic and Graflex Photography" around 1970. I've got one (finally got in in 2006, after missing an opportunity at a pretty complete kit in 1979 because I couldn't spare a third more than my rent). It's awesome. I can use lenses with shutters, or lenses without shutters (like the 135 mm Tessar I keep on it, which is mounted in a shutter, but the shutter is an empty shell, with only an aperture iris). I bought a Graflok conversion back for the 1940 Anniversary Speed (which came with a spring back), specifically so I could mount a Lomograflok, and now I have one of the world's weirdest instant cameras. I've also got three Grafmatics, so when I have them all loaded I can whip off eighteen exposures as fast as I can operate the Grafmatics and rewind the focal plane shutter (or cock and fire a dial-set Compur, if I mount one of my plate camera lenses instead).
i really like your way of story telling, great images too !!! B&W on a film is something else !!!
Keep going! Love your videos and super duper dry humour!
You’ve got to love that Futura type on the body. Worth the price of admission.
I thought the suffering of the mountain dew was finally not needed anymore after the announcement at the end of the roadtrip video. Yet you keep soldiering on, driving home the point. You are the hero we need, not the one we deserve.
Nice work! Looking forward to seeing the CineStill 400D shots!
Great vid! I too like that hp5+ "extra crunchy nasty contrast" - so much that I'd buy 100 foot rolls of the stuff.
Welcome to the world of 4x5! The camera you picked up is pretty interesting.
Thanks for introducing me to THAT camera, I thought I knew most of the 4x5's out there ! A very cool piece of work.
Love this style of yours
Great video Mfer!
Enjoying the content. This is one of my favorite spots to shoot, it's calmed down a lot. People used to hold rituals out there :o , thanks for the videos!
hoo boy, can't wait to see what you end up doing with those Aerochrome sheets 👀
Amazing quality of these pictures
The Optar 203mm is a beautiful portrait and it’ll fit those graflex /rapflex shutters perfectly. They can be found really cheap. There’s no difference between the 203mm Kodak ektar and Optar lenses… they came out of the same factory and have the same optical formula
This was an adequate surprise after the 3 hour.
Any halfway decent post war lens will be coated to some degree. Your lens appears to have SN G59417. According to the Wollensak Serial Number list, this means it was produced in 1969. It is most definitely coated. It is quite easy to tell if a lens is coated just by looking at it.
Breaking news: Kodak somehow discontinues Flaming Hot Mountain Dew, price increases on existing sodas to follow.
Behold another procession of the channel: a Jason’s new sunglasses!
I love how your videos look like they were shot on film
Not photoshoping yourself badly into the background of that Nolan frame, -2 points.
AWESOME! I just bought a Linhof Technika IV 4x5 before Christmas. I haven't shot with it yet. Still practicing loading in a changing bag, but looking forward to talking it out. It is possible to handhold it, the weight is similar to the Pentax 6x7, but I'm going to keep it on a tripod. Glad to here the Cinestill 4x5 sheets and 220 is still happening.
@ralph95vip

Not really handheldable. You need to hold it, while focusing and looking at the ground glass. Those two maybe doable, but then you ll need to slide in the film holder and remove the dark slide. Yeah. Good luck doing that without moving the camera which is likely to throw it off focus. Just use a tripod. It's much easier.
@justinmueller9579
Жыл бұрын
Is actually do-able! Technika have a rangefinder and a viewfinder accessory, so load film holder, pull the darkslide, focus compose and fire shutter
That "nasty" contrast is very cool!
I used a label maker on my darkslides. "loaded" on the unexposed side and "exposed" on the used size. Empties stay "exposed" until they are reloaded.
Yessss! I should have ordered cinestill sheet films as well
Hey that's my town of VC county. Cool to see you out here mate

Ektachrome Christmas 5!!!! Jason! We’re ready for it!
one tip about the flare in that negative, use a hood all the time, and if needed, use the dark slide to shade the lens from the sun, also the slot in the film holder, if the felt is old, it can let light in. a polarising filter is also a great idea, to stop any reflections.
Btw, I got the Speedy G BECAUSE it has a focal plane shutter that allows me to put any weird-ass barrel lens I want on it. Fun fun.
Come on, I'm only half way through the coast to coast video! What luxury!
don't be in a hurry to shoot those 4x5 aerochrome sheets. wait until next summer, and shoot in the brightest sunshine possible.
I love how your IG posts are the cocktail weenie appetizer to what is the main course of these videos

One always forms a relationship with their tools, and in this case, our cameras. Its our tool to capture a moment in time that will never be seen again, except for the image captured, and we can grow to love or hate said tools.
Dude I'll take some of the 4x5 film holders if you want.
crazy paint skills
That's a rare camera, always wanted one of those. Also, check out my Conflict 45AF project, for some more casual 4x5" shooting.
Du bist ein oller Schrumpel, ich find die Idee mit dem verdrehten darkslide super!
neat looking camera
Love the nen-two-you 4x5. I keep convincing myself not to try large format even though I have to resist with every fiber of my being. Bigger negs and I love making things more difficult for myself. Just out of curiosity, did you meter your HP5plus at 400 then push it two stops in development, or meter at 1600? Love the look.
Three times I missed out on cameras. One5x7 and two 4x5 but really, now that film is so pricey and scarce, I'm almost glad. Watching you work on getting set for each shot was interesting. More to do to make a picture that I thought. Maybe that is why my sister-in-law sold hers, ( the 5x7 and one of the 4x5s ). Maybe she thought she was doing my wife a favor!!

there's no doubt LF is getting more expensive as the years go by but theres no better time to get into it than now. It's more popular than ever
Awesome!!!
Man, I dropped in on a bunch of those cheap holders too. Turns out you can't flip the dark slides which is probably why you double exposed. A caution to anyone wanting to buy those.
4:37 I personally just use a 37mm to 72mm step up ring on mine. The 37mm screws in enough that its solid.
This aspect ratio is perfect to watch on my Fold 4 in landscape. High five for 4x5.
I honestly kind of like how the double exposure looks on that first shot,it kind of looks like your shooting through a window with a reflection on it
The beauty of a Grafmatic -- you can't repeat a sheet if you've cycled the Grafmatic, and it locks after you've cycled all of them.
Big Bulky and such a Bad Boy Jason for getting a great camera :D I wish I had a 4x5 but the film prices here in Tokyo is insane....Kodak make it Cheaper plz
Oh you absolutely are starting a relationship with that camera.
Kodak, please! You’re killing him!!!!
I like how easy you take pictures. Anyone in Zambia who likes taking pictures?
Nikon FM3a with that sweet sweet 45mm, that is the way.
I'm still waiting for the 400D in 4x5 too, but also in 120 as well. I made the "mistake" of supporting them for both of these formats at the same time. CineStill doesn't ship anything until everything is available. When/where did you see this update?
In the future can you try wet/dry plates?
So you're not gonna talk about the "fake" aerochrome from your last video? The world needs to know!
I feel like Monica is just out there writing a letter to Kodak alaris begging them to just bring back aerodrome so her fiance will stop chugging spicy dew.

Dropped a like for that Yahoo Answers reference.
Nice indeed
6:11 Finally
this might very well be what pushes me over the edge.. of getting a 4x5...
Should have looked at toyo45cf I own that and a sinar f2 and the Toyo is nice because it's the last Gen of 4x5 cameras before digital came out and they are fairly cheap! Also paired with a fujinon 125 or 210 Nikon you get amazing results. Jus tno rear movements.
