I haven't seen a version of this song done like that before. It's always raw and heartwrenching but more from a place of tearful sadness. But this was powerful and true in it *rightful bitterness* and genuine honestly. It's not a broken down reverence, it's a strength in rememberence of something truely awful and malicious that humans beings did to eachother, like "how can you sing Hallelujah after everything? I don't know, but you'll be damn sure I will!" Raul Esparza is just a treasure.

This is why Raul belongs on the boards. An acting-only Raul is only half a Raul Esparza. Same applies to both Patti Murin and Colin Donnell... both of them sing far too well to be tied down to a non-singing character. Angela Lansbury managed to have her "cousin" (also played by her) sing on "Murder, She Wrote", but that was only a few episodes. Elizabeth Montgomery got to chew the scenery (and wear shockingly short miniskirts) as Cousin Serena a great deal more often.

I was obsessed with Being Alive long before I ever saw how gorgeous he was. He considers himself more of an actor than a singer! He does infuse some serious emotional intensity into his incredible singing!!

This is the best version of "Hallelujah" I ever heard. The passion of this voice is worth a grammy award.

oh yes, he had a moment.

I was there that night. The entire production was a very somber, sobering affair...it was thoughtful and restrained. And then Raul Esparza came and tore the place open with this. It was not an evening for standing ovations, but everyone wanted to get up for this. I don’t think many, if any, did. But we all wanted to. Even if we sat, most eyes in the place were blurred with tears. I’m not a big sap for music, but this was too powerful to not connect with intimately and passionately. It was pure art and pure talent. And I don’t think the video does it proper justice.

This was a 10 year memorial for 9/11, if I remember right.

Every once in a while, I come back here when I feel like I need to be completely broken. It always works beautifully.

I saw him on Broadway years ago, so I knew he could sing, but he absolutely crushes this song. Best version I've ever heard.

I'm in tears... I found my partner unresponsive a year ago... I saved his life... I've never had to do anything that difficult in my whole 30 years of life... after they took him away in the ambulance I sang this song with such hurt and anger and my voice sounded that painful... my partner sang this song often... he didn't die but he's been taken away from me and that's why I'm in tears now... I've lost him 2xs in a year to things that aren't his fault... I cannot wait until I can fly on top of him in a MASSIVE bear hug when he's brought back to me... I'm struggling so bad financially... emotionally and mentally and I've been dealing with sadness... anxiety... depression and suicidal thoughts... but moments like hearing this song help me refocus and remember why I fight so hard and not give up... WE GOT THIS 🧡💚😭

Right. No wonder I was drawn to him. My spirit was connecting the musician in me to more than just law drama.

This is the first time I heard him sing this song and it brings tears to my eyes what a talented actor and singer my dear is to see him on Broadway

I come in over & over because I cannot belive this man's talent. What a gift!!

Every time I watch Raul Esparza sing something just by chance, I end up listening to him for an hour just killing it. My god.

This is by far the very best rendition of this song.

I live in the UK and have watched Law and Order SVU for a few years and last night I saw Raul in the episode titled 'The Undiscovered Country' and if anyone deserved an award for a television performance it was his on this at the time last episode. I came here and find one of the greatest heart wrenching song performances ever - what a guy.

This is my favorite of this song. Raul Esparza is just amazing. He was down in NYC on 9-11, I believe he was on Broadway at the time. He said it had a profound effect on him. You can see that in this performance. He literally sang and emotes so much throughout the song, that he has to catch his breath at the end. It's not a sweet version, and I don't think he meant it to be. It's just a raw, powerful, gut wrenching performance, especially when you put into context what the concert was for. (Tenth Anniversary of 9-11) 9-11 was emotional for the while country but here in NYC, it was just awful. So while you may not like his screaming and growling as some called it, remember why he is even there in the first place, and what the concert was about. I do have to add, Raul Esparza is a beast!! One of my favorite Broadway singers. He gives EVERYTHING he has in every performance. 🥰

I can't believe I've watched SVU all these years and never knew he could sing. Also, that 7 minutes went by too quickly. He has a magnificent voice!

If I'm ever getting married I'm saving up for Raul to sing at my wedding

He has honed his entire physicality into an instrument of art. That is very rare in our culture, he's a national treasure, more people should know.

It's only been a month and I already miss him on Law&Order SVU. Have fun on Broadway but come back soon!

I honestly didn't think I ever needed to hear anyone sing (and often brutalize) this song again. But then I watched Esparza's pathos-driven performance and I am fully and 100 percent shook. This is what it's all about. (It helps I still remember his very confessionary and touching article in the NYT so many years ago about his personal life.) Lovely.

This is by far the best version of this song that I have heard in a VERY long time. Well done Raul.

I loved this guy as Chilton. He’s my favorite Chilton thus far. The King of Sass!

I've performed this many times on a city street corner with my hat out for a buck. There's something about most people walking by not caring that makes you feel anonymous and bold...and I spilled my heart out onto those street corners with my eyes closed sometimes and the music took over and I would weep. This is a great song to let pass through you.

I didn't think he could sing. I almost shed a tear because of this music.

There are no superlatives adequate to describe Raul Esparza's otherworldly performance of "Hallelujah." It is the definitive version of an iconic song. Once in a great while, a singer comes along who was born to sing a song, and Raul Esparza and "Hallelujah" are that singer and that song.

I'm so touched... What an artist, a soul that should get so much more recognition...

Until today my favorite version of this was by Rufus Wainwright. Let me repeat-until today. As a musical play actor he did just that. He played this song like he was performing a Broadway play.

He sings with his whole being. I finally got to see him live in a show last weekend in Berkeley. He is transcendent. The talent. That voice. Got to meet him post show and he was kind and humble.

Wow!!! Basically every version performed and recorded since 1991 has taken John Cale's 1991 remake as its point of departure. But, very few except Cale ever sing all of Cale's curated verses. Esparza here does "the whole Cale" then finishes with a verse that Cale deleted - the final verse from Cohen's original 1983 studio version. I've never heard anyone else do this. It's powerful.
