    Lexi is the only person qualified to narrate this subreddit. No shade towards the other guys, absolutely not - they are awesome and sometimes even MORE than awesome, but it's just something special when you hear Lexi's happy-confused squeal-laughter when she sees something that she both loves and is horrified by at the same time, especially when it comes to tech related stuff.

    At my workplace there's a tape dispenser which used to slide around too much. A previous employee fixed the problem by taping a dead UPS battery to it. One of those dense 12v 7.2Ah bricks, I'm sure Lexi knows exactly the type. Completely coincidentally, my doorstop is the same kind of battery. Before anyone freaks out, these are lead-acid batteries. They don't become "spicy pillows" like lithium-ion batteries sometimes do. And they're totally dead so nothing bad would happen if you short the terminals. Lead-acid batteries can be dangerous if they leak acid but these are sealed AGM ones with completely undamaged cases so the risk is minimal.

    Normally I say "if it's stupid but it works then it's not stupid" but in the case of that battery clamp made with pliers and a ziptie, DO NOT DO THAT. As a former ASE Cert. Master Mechanic, I can tell you: doing things like that can severely injure or kill you.

  • @MikrySoft

    @MikrySoft

    11 ай бұрын

    Sure, but what's the worst case scenario here? Poor connection and some heating, at worst some molten insulation. It's the negative terminal, it can't short anywhere and cause a fire. Even if it were to fall off when the car was running it will either a) keep running (and possibly slowly kill all electronics with voltage spikes) b) shut down the car, which is not ideal, but not inherently dangerous. I wouldn't take this contraption on a highway and get it replaced ASAP, but real, imminent risk seems fairly minimal to me.

  • @allhonesty848

    @@MikrySoft I know a guy who welded his wedding ring to his finger while attempting something like this with uninsulated pliers on the positive terminal. The pliers touched the ring which touched the car body. His ring had to be cut off and his finger...well...you ever see the video of the hotdog being electrocuted? The sight of it has stuck with me and I feel sorta obligated to at least try to warn people against repeating his mistake. It's not something I ever want to see again.

    If you HAVE to do this and you are safe about it, use round headed vise grips or a good, adjustable hose clamp. Something that will lock on and actually hold the wires in place. Those zip ties will slip off too easily.

Ignoring that, the amount of light the electric light produces is much less than the amount of sunlight needed to generate the electricity. @@Psi_Fan123 The theoretical max efficiency for white LEDs is about 40% and the best commercially available solar panels are about 25% efficient. So if you put electricity into the lights you'd end up with only 10% back through the panels. And that's assuming the spectra are matching and they don't, actual results would be much worse. You'd need over 100% to come back for it to be worthwhile, and that is against the first law of thermodynamics. The only way it would make sense in reality is if you can buy electricity very cheaply but can sell solar-generated power at astronomical rates. Some incentive programs will pay a few times market rate for solar power but none are near high enough to cheat the system this way. The practical thing you might run into is if the solar panels are powering a completely separate system. One example is a solar-powered calculator, another one is a solar-recharging automated flush valve for a toilet. These are all very low power things.

    Technically you can generate a neverending current but you'd need a constant electrostatic source to generate it so it doesn't lose power over time and such a thing doesn't exist on Earth yet.
