I'm native American, and my friend told me once that his mom was on the phone speaking to her sister about home matters in our language, when a tourist got in her face and demanded her speak English, and to go back to her country. Mind you, this took place on OUR reservation, about 95% Native American population. The mom looked stunned, then without ending the call, told the tourist, "f*** you, I'm speaking Navajo, on my reservation, to my sister. You can go back to England or whatever Anglo country you came from" the tourist fumed, tried to complained, then got laughed out of the gas station. Love it

With the second story I had something similar. In second grade, two of my classmates always spoke Spanish to each other because they were really comfortable in speaking it when the other was starting to learn a little bit more English after transferring to our class. One day the teacher got annoyed at them and told them to speak English because the word English is in our schools name. I was really shocked at that because all my life I knew that America is a melting pot of many cultures. Heck if you were to go to New York or Boston there are many areas with different cultures like Greek, Italian, even Polish. Just to use those as examples. If I were to say something to this lady I will probably say shut your mouth in Spanish since that’s the only phrase that I could say.

Najimubu America is specific because unlike most countries, we don’t have an official language. Yes, English is the most common language nationally speaking, but you can go to a wide variety of places within the US where English isn’t really the primary language. For example, rural Hawaii or Puerto Rico where Hawaiian and Spanish are primary. In certain parts of New England, it’s French and/or Pennsylvania Dutch. This is essentially the reason why we don’t have an official language, it was a country built by multilingual people coming into a continent that already had 500+ indigenous languages and dialects that are still spoken today. As far as I’m concerned, as long as you can do your job and the basics in English, no one really HAS to be fluent in English, there are plenty of places in the US to live in where Chinese, Spanish, Dutch, or French are the primary social languages.

That first story reminds me a little of my dad. Back in the early 90’s he asked some random stranger to watch my little sister while we went on some ride that was too scary for her. This was at an amusement park and my mom and other sister were off at a different part of the park. The guy apparently said yes. I don’t really remember it since I was pretty young, even though I was there. Me and my dad went on the ride then picked up my sister from the stranger. When my mom found out she was livid! I was maybe 5 or 6 at the time, my sister had to have been like 3 or 4. Everything worked out fine, but my mom still tells the story to this day.

When I was in fifth grade, my friend and I came up with a bunch of gibberish code words, so many that if you'd heard us talking, you might have thought we were speaking another language. There was this girl we didn't like (I'll call her Eva). So, to get on her nerves, whenever we had a conversation and Eva walked by, we'd switch from English to gibberish. After a while, Eva noticed and told the teacher that we were talking about her in some other language. The teacher asked us what language we were speaking. We shrugged and said that Eva could record us talking if she liked, which is exactly what she did. After about fifteen minutes Eva said that her mom knew a lot of language specialists, and when she proved that we were badmouthing her, she'd get us suspended. Her mom teaches French at a language school, so we believed her about her mom knowing some language specialists. But the second part... We were actually cracking the worst knock-knock jokes we could think of. In art class a few days later, Eva played the recording for the teacher, and every once in a while, she'd pause it and "translate" what we were saying. She claimed it was German, but there actually was a German kid in the class, and he said it wasn't German, but what sounded like a mix of English and some other language. And then Eva flipped out on him... She yanked his hair and yelled "THEY'RE BADMOUTHING ME AND YOU'RE TAKING THEIR SIDE?! I'M GONNA CALL THE COPS ON YOU AND-" the teacher yanked Eva off of him and tells her off, and Eva turned her wrath on the teacher. She grabbed the nearest hard object (a ruler) and whacked the teacher with it. The teacher dragged her out of the room, and that's the last we saw of Eva. I think she got kicked out.

You were bullying Eva though? You've just admitted that you deliberately wanted to make Eva paranoid, you were almost gaslighting her. Making it appear as if you were being rude but ensuring she had no evidence of ill intent. I don't know the situation, and if Eva had done something to merit this reaction, but on the surface it sounds like you were being horrible.

+Ionia It went both ways. She's always telling the teachers that we did something wrong, no matter how small, and often it's an outright LIE she made up to try to get us in trouble. We always managed to disprove it if she was lying, but still, it was annoying to constantly have teachers coming over to grill us

I had a friend at work who spoke French and Spanish as well as English. I took Spanish all through high school, and he was helping me learn more. Sadly, we were both ordered to speak English only in the workplace. Some of our coworkers somehow got the idea that we were talking about them behind their backs and making editorial comments about the antics in the break room. This was fair, but I really missed out on learning more Spanish.

I was also terrified at that point. Dad of the freaking year there dude.

I have a similar story. English is my first language, but I am fluent in Russian. We had a foreign exchange student come to our school from Russia. I'm very shy so I didn't speak to her, but other people that knew some Russian did. I overheard her making fun of how overweight I am. (Note that I'm not overweight, I'm curvy bug very healthy) She called me homophobic slurs and shamed me for being Atheist.I started to talk to her in Russian and she was completely shocked, she didn't know I spoke Russian. Her: (in Russian) "What do you want?" Me:(in Russian) "I heard you were making fun if me," at that moment I notice her shocked face. So then I said "That's right b**ch I am fluent in Russian. Never disrespect me or me religion. And anotherthing, don't talk about me begun my back. I'm not am easy target and I won't be mad fun of. You have no proof of any God existing, so don't be entitled to your own opinion." She sits there with a shocked face. She then proceeds to apologize multiple times. Her: (in Russian) "I'm sorry, I'm just jealous of how pretty you are an I didn't know how to tell you because I didn't know you knew Russian. My parents forced my religion onto me. Im sorry" I accept her apology. She ends up being my closest friend and I got to help her learn and understand English. Best day of my life.

In reference to the last story about the two Korean girls, I do have a story to tell lol. Back when I was in middle school (2005), we had a very cool principal named Jose Negron. Just like most middle schools, we had a student drop off Area. Also, just for reference, Jose no way resembled the norm of what a Hispanic person would look like in your mind. They actually look more white than anything. AnyWho, One morning, a very irate Hispanic mom was getting quite upset that the line was taking too long to drop off her child. Cursing and wailing, honking her horn, You get the jest of it. Jose quickly noticed and went over to her since he was directing the traffic that morning. He immediately asked her kindly to calm down and stop cursing and wait her turn since there was no rush. That set her off even more. She then proceeded to start cussing and wailing and yelling in Spanish at Jose in very colorful language. I know this, because we had several Hispanic students in my school that we’re not shy about teaching as white kids most of the cuss words That we already knew , But in Spanish lol. And let’s just say they were not nice. Jose took off his glasses turn your straightener face right there at her car window, held up his hand almost in her face. She was suddenly stunned just about. Almost immediately becoming silent as we all watched. Without skipping a beat, and I’m only gonna say this in English because this was later told me by a kid in my class who was Mexican born, That she needed to stop yelling, be quiet, and to wait her turn in the drop off line, or he would ban HER from ever dropping her kid off ever again (meaning she would have to make other arrangements as she was a single mom). She was immediately stunned. Because up until then, she thought that this guy directing the traffic was just some other white guy standing around, instead of being a pure blooded Spaniard himself, from across the pond. And yes, he said his peice to her in Spanish. He ended with saying, “so, are you gonna shut up now?…” she rolled up her window, waited the 5 more minutes for her turn, and sped away. We all saw mr. negron the rest of the day with this triumphant grin on his face. 😈😈😈🤪
