My dad is _that_ guy. He helped and defended and even lied for his son (my half-brother who is dead to me) despite the atrocities he committed. These are including, but not limited to: girlfriend, wife, and child abuse, child neglect, hardcore drug abuse and creation, forcing drugs on his girlfriend until she was addicted, abusing and neglecting a dog to the point where 5 of 7 of just pups died, AND assaulting my Mom and burning my baby sister's face with a clothes iron. Yet, to this day, he encourages us (the family he abandoned and failed to pay child support to) to talk to the man or even feel bad about him while he's in prison... which will be a while since he's got a life sentence. Sometimes, the enablers almost as bad, or as bad, as the perpetrators themselves.

He went to jail for molesting a neighbor but Mom wouldn't let me tell, she was abusive too. Nothing could taint her reputation.

You'd better believe it's traumatizing. Mom was raped by her own mother repeatedly when she was a child. Messed her up, though you wouldn't think it when you look at how unimaginably _awesome_ she is today. I'm pretty sure her dad didn't know until she told him later in life, though iirc, the way he looked sort of looked like he'd been suspecting it.

I remember one story where OP grew up being severely beaten and nearly murdered by their mom on a regular basis only for their one supportive family member to say years later "I'm sure it was all just a misunderstanding." I think it was pro revenge story because I remember the story ending with OP informing the cops when the mom returned to the country so she could be arrested and they learned that she got out in the first place because the aunt let her use her passport. I know OP loves that aunt and they feel bad for getting her into trouble, but being a nice person does not erase the fact that she put her sisters feelings over the child said sister tried to kill over and over.

Really anyone that has been in the military long enough to control their voice over a crowd should be feared. Abuse either emotional, physical, or sexual is not something you just "get over" as anyone with any kind of brains would know.
