I remember growing up listening to REM. I liked their songs. But nothing touched me the way that "Monster" did. The first time I saw the video for "Bang and Blame," it floored me. They had my complete attention. It was so emotionally complex. It tapped into feelings that I didn't know how to express, and maybe still don't. It's really hard to admit that I always worry that I'll end up being one of my parents- I'll either be the banger or the blamer. That fear is kind of crippling. I don't feel like I can have any serious relationships because it's too risky. This song (and the amazing video) felt like the first and only time anyone understood that feeling. It's still a personal favorite.

I also totally feel that R.E.M. hold something very deep, universal and almost mystical...poetry and emotions and feelings of the soul that you cannot express with words...only with the music, the amazing photography and art of the videos and the poetry of Michael...when I was studying American Studies in Budapest, and Halloween was coming up, and the turning of yellow and red of the leaves, my heart and mind exapnding with my studies and the poetry I was reading and writing at the time, the critical thinking our professors challenged us to, the feeling of the whole world and life ahead of me, and those nights, the crisp cool of the air, and then Christmas, when one year I think 1995 I asked for the Reveal album...sometimes, when I had no words to describe it, just these feelings and emotions of something bigger, something poetic and unexplainable, of love, lust and magic...I would say to myself: I've got that Michael Stipe feeling again. 😊 I still can't really explain the wealth of feelings and emotions this means to me, and a lot of us, something to do with the U.S., something with all of humanity, spirituality, and art. I love you, R.E.M! ❤👍🙏😊🌟❤

I hope to God you don't still feel this way. you are you, and you recognize something that is not you. That is a HUGE achievement on your part. Bravo! So you can move on, but you don't have to carry that into any relationship. Instead, if you see it happening address it with the person you're in a relationship with, and pray, pray pray to get over it, because, despite what all these agnostics believe (or profess they "don't believe") prayer does work. It got me over my dad's PTSD that I had somehow allowed to inhabit part of me... Don't ever give up.

The local "rock" station I have here in Philly (93.3 WMMR) whips out 'The One I Love' every so often; occasionally 'It's The End Of The World As We Know It' too. I'm 57, and although I've loved R.E.M.'s sound since I first heard them when I was around 20, I've only recently discovered a host of other great bands - The Hoodoo Gurus, The Feelies, The Dream Syndicate, and The Church. @@FlickanIDetKroktaRummet It's not a disgrace if you understand a little something about context. REM were ahead of their time musically and lyrically in the context of English-language popular music of the tail end of the 20th century. When I listen to this song it makes me think of my childhood. My parents had money and professional jobs, so everyone thought that I had it made, but really, they were both emotionally abusive. They tore me down and told me that I would never amount to anything because of my disability. My Mom was very obsessed with society's standards of beauty and told me once (when I hit puberty) that if I gained anymore weight she would wire my jaw shut. My father told me not to go to university because he felt my IQ was too low (I had the top mark in my psychology in University.) I used to think I was a failure in every aspect of my life and and then I realized the only reason I fail at a task is because I give up. I struggle daily with the voices that still haunt me but I tell myself "It's not my fault so let it go." I now realize my parents were the ones who had the problem.

Monster is such a great album. I'm glad it's getting more love over the years because when it came out people were very critical of it. My favorite r.e.m. albums are automatic for the people, monster, and adventures in hi-fi. They took risks on those album without losing their voice. When my band opened a R.e.m. tribute show we had to choose from a list of songs (the headline got first pick) and this song wasn't taken. Hell it wasn't even on the list! So we opened the show with this song and the crowd LOVED it!

Yes. I think you are right. Hip hop definitely plays a role in destroying good music or destroying the possibilities for good music. Todays Radio is a nightmare.😳

It was a bit of an experiment with Harder Rock and a lot of Back-Tracking. Playing music backwards live is difficult. And the album did not sell as well as their previous two. I liked it though. But New Adventures In HiFi was better. At least to my aged ears.
this song reminds me of hollow teen years where I am lucky I survived my horrible upbringing.i lived on nothi g really and some how still made it
This song reminds me of why I love this band so much. So haunting with so much drive behind it!

Yes as I agree with that statement!
...was in high school back in '94 when I first heard this song on VOA's medium wave band...the reception was not good but I tried turning the radio in all directions just to get a good reception. Just imagine the sheer frustration I had to go through when such a good song is being aired. It turned out I was only able to hear about 80% of the song. The good Ray McDonald was the host of the program Now Music USA... A lovely song I thought of it then up until now.🇬🇾
A fase/álbuns 90's do R.E.M eh de longe sua melhor obra.
I can watch this video over n over n it never stops giving me chills the way the guitar sounds, Luv it 🎶 🎸

que gran temazo, icono cultural de la generacion rebelde de los noventa.
Love this song. It's about Michael Stipe's relationship with River Phoenix, and how he knew that Hollywood was killing River and that he needed to get away from it. He tried to persuade River to come to Atlanta for awhile and just make music. I wish it would have turned out that way. "I'd turn the screw and leave the Screen..."

Interesting. I always thought the song was about Courtney Love.
Always been a fan of REM, this is one I've missed but as always it's a masterpiece.
If I was ever asked to "sum up the 90s with one song" I'd just pop this on. Still puts me in a place all these years later.

This song makes me feel equally nostalgic and deeply sad. It's fucking beautiful. 💜

Amazing & awesome band! They were representative of the stellar brilliance that was Alternative music. Terrific & mature stuff!
Song says it all,he knows who he is;the group sounds great and never gets old
Está canción me gusta mucho, es de mis rolas de toda la vida, me trae gratos recuerdos.
REM is one of my favorite groups to this day ! I was entranced with them back in the 90's
Somewhere in the 1990's when I first saw this video, it literally put me in a trance. It blew me away. I love the song, but the video, in particular, mesmerized me for years.

I had forgotten about this song... I have a faint memory of humming this back in grade 9, when the song had just come out and it was like, number 28 in the Much Music Top30 countdown. "Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang... blame, blame, blame." I used to hum a bit louder than usual, when my friends were around. The song wasn't really popular but I guess I wanted to be all hipster about it and be able to say that I liked the song before it became a hit. Never did happen though, but I just recalled that old memory...
Album came out when I was a frosh in HS. I’d get home from school to hear “What’s the frequency Kenneth” on MTV. I would blare the fuck out of it on my parents console TV. Damn, the nineties, they are missed.
que cancion tan poderosa mistica,y consecuente con la decada .
One of those songs you hear in your youth, that just becomes more apt and relevant with every decade that goes by. Relationships are wearing, abusive, exhausting and vampiric. You kiss on me, tug on me, rub on me, jump on me, you bang on me, beat on me, hit on me, let go on me. Stipe always did have a very ambivalent view of women - you can hear it throughout the album on Bang & Blame, Tongue ('I want to tell you how much I hate this') and I Don't Sleep, I Dream ('You come into my little scene, hip hip hooray). Monster is such a brooding, erotic record but at times almost malevolent. The tenderest moment is his plea to Kurt Cobain, 'Let Me In.' It's no surprise that Stipe eventually chose men - I often wished I was more like him, not merely bi-curious, but bisexual. It's R.E.M.s most underrated album and is best enjoyed with a bottle of fine wine while you look back through your own lens on the mess that is modern heterosexual relationships.
The best REM song.... I just love it. I was at front row in the Gorge, beautiful scenery, and listening to the best band ever! Love you Michael Stipe! And all of your bandmembers, you gave me a lot of fun memories! I remember driving to the gorge, and could not believe that I was actually going to see you all, live. It was the best concert ever, I will never forget it.

Far and away my favorite REM song, too. Such a unique arrangement! I love it when a songwriter is able to pull off that difficult feat of creating something that is both compelling and unlike anything you've heard before! Being in MN, I had to Google "The Gorge". Sounds like a memorable experience for sure!

I live in Vancouver and still haven't seen a show at The Gorge.
This song is one of the more perfect examples of how music can have deception in it: You have GREAT music, wonderful sounds and melody that appeal to your JOY, yet the lyrics are straight out of the BLUES tradition--laments about life, about struggle, about seeking redemption or simply overcoming those things. When your heart is bonding with joyful music and your mind is bonding with melancholy lyrics, this presents itself as a strange puzzle for you to solve, and you don't usually recognize the difference, you just plain bond with the whole dichotomy instead of finding triumph, but you feel like you "won" because you bonded with an emotion. Don't trust emotions to bring you to truth, only to point you away from trouble...
This popped up last week on my KZread playlist. I hadn't heard it in at least 20 years. Time flies when you're getting up there!
Crushing blistering refrain-none of the heavyweight heavy metal groups have anything on this.
I had my first kiss while this song was playing in a pub in 1995. Met the girl in a group of friends in the morning on a day out. The day came to an end and i never saw her again.. #memories Its my favorite REM song, what a beautiful outro... xxx
REM were the quintessence of rock alternative with this kind of track.. I think many musician were hoping to be even close to their music
Esta canción me voló la cabeza desde la primera vez que la escuché. Radio Metrostereo Guatemala 1994. 16 años
I woke up today and for some reason I wanted to hear this song. And it has been years! All of a sudden I just had t o hear it. Strange how our minds work! Absolutely love R.E.M. This is one of the best songs ever!

ahh, the enchanting music of REM, and especially this album - Monster. Love the music of the 90's, REM, INXS, Midnight Oil. I really miss these bands live.
This is such an Incredible song!! I wish I could’ve gotten the chance to see it performed live.
Stipe and the band at one of their best efforts. Meaningful ditty to say the least. great post remhq. Thanks
For me, REM started with Document and ended with Reveal. That was the period where they were most interesting, creative and sophisticated. As for Monster, it's a nasty beast of an album but a damn good one!
Grew up on the sounds of this Georgia band. One summer I literally had a better quality of life because of their album was with me. I used REM music for hope to survive through many hard times. Never give up my brothers and sisters. Living life by the Golden Rule. Another remote corner of the globe. Warm thoughts of bursting nostalgia from Big Pearl Island appreciation.
Stipe speaks volumes above anyone else, ok vedder, dela rocha and maynard keenan also but purity and honestly has always been michaels allie
The band seems to have done everything possible to forget this song existed. They never played it live after the Monster tour and left if off their anthologies even though it was one their biggest hits. Perhaps Stipe is uncomfortable with the subject matter, which would be understandable.
Every man gets a sense of what they felt and where they were in life when they heard this song for the first time...its not only the lyrics but melody that strings and twists the emotions
Where the hell have I been.. I've been lisening to REM since the 80s.. I'm about to be 48 and this song is absolutely amazing but I can't remember it ever resonating with me.. the wiser you get I guess.. this song is fire damn.. legends
I............LOVE............THIS...........BAND..........
Como esses caras eram muitos bons uma das bandas preferidas de Kurt Cobain
Hoy 24 de julio del 2022 Lo estoy escuchando después de 25 años sin escucharlo buenísimo del grupo R E M
I remember when this album came out. I think I had a copy in 1995. I played it and to be honest I thought what the hell is this. It isn't very good. But over the years it really has grown on me. Especially this song which I hated at first. One of my favourite R.E.M songs ever now.
