Him and his wife are such prats. They will have a reputation within the family now, if they didn't already because I doubt such entitlement and self-centredness is something new. Imagine what awful entitled parents they're going to be. They'll be taking their kid to child-free weddings and fancy not-baby-appropriate restaurants for sure.

And the parents are absolutely right, having a kid changes everything that you will even have the ability to do in the future. Your life is no longer your own. If OP and his wife don't adjust their mindsets, then I feel so sorry for any children they will have. My parents told us all the time how much we ruined their lives, and we were so incredibly planned that each of us are a set length of planned time apart, 2 years and 10 months.

Exactly! These assholes decided to have a baby when they knew that this huge trip was coming up. Did they stop and think for a second about what a pregnancy entails? Or they just rammed ahead with their plans and made their idiocy everyone's problem. Get lost. Someone does this to me, I tell them to not speak to me again. And if they dare to wrangle anyone to use as flying monkeys, they will be permanently cut off. What absolute piles of trash.

Story 2: one of the gifts pictured is a dreidel, which implies these are Hanukkah gifts. All the Jewish people I know say Hanukkah is not as commercialized as Christmas and they don’t get extravagant gifts. Just lots of little things. I think what OP really wants is a Christmas gift haul, but that’s an unreasonable expectation for Hanukkah, and certainly too much to expect without a family discussion and agreement.

My family bought tickets to universal for a family get together and in the time it took before the trip I got pregnant. I love rides, especially water rides, but I couldn’t go on any of them. You know what I did? I didn’t ruin the trip for everyone else. I held bags while they got to ride, and they thanked me by buying me gifts and food and tried to find things I could do. And sure it wasn’t what I had wanted to do when I spent $500 for a ticket, but I still had fun and got to hang out with my siblings who I hadn’t seen in a while. And I had paid for my trip, it wasn’t bought for me. That lady is selfish.

I had to use operation Santa this year because I just didn't have the money to buy my daughter presents since I had to get my car fixed and on a very fixed income. My daughter is 4, so I just asked for some basic toys and some clothes because she had jumped sizes again. Whomever adopted our letter sent some really nice gifts and clothes. I was beyond grateful for that level of kindness and it made me cry. I plan to pay it forward when I get a chance because I want to give another child the priceless smiles that mine got. So amazing. However, the o.p. is greedy and shouldn't abuse people's kindness like that.

Most of the letters I read were exactly this, parents or kids making entirely reasonable requests for toys and gifts. I did it with a group of friends so we usually tried to pick a few letters from bigger families because we thought they were less likely to be selected. I'll definitely look out for it next year!

Isn’t Christmas the holiday of giving not getting? All that stuff in the pic is better than nothing at all, even if those gifts are lame Third Story: I would laugh at this letter. My mother refuses to give us clothes for christmas unless we explicitly ask for them. (I usually ask for shoes, and my brothers go for beanies and hoodies.) She once told me that as a child, opening a box and finding *socks* was just utterly disappointing and she hated doing that. She always gets us socks... but they are in stockings and usually really cool animal or tv show socks, not plain white school socks like she got. I've always appreciated this as I'm super texture sensitive and tend to rewear clothes for years. My current t-shirt collection I've been wearing for 5-15 years. Once it falls apart, it goes. As a guy who has been in multiple DnD groups. The first being 10-12 players and 2 co-DMs took ages to get things ready, multiple printed character sheets, character creation, having space to host and it being from 10am-6pm we would sometimes be invited to stay for food. Also, some parents would pressure their children into getting toys that were either less expensive, or something for another child. For example, think of a boy who wants a transformer, but mom insist he get the raggedy Ann and Andy dolls so that his sister can play with them too. Then the sister come through and get a Barbie. Looks like they got 2 packs of 3 judging by color scheme, a 3 pack of Pacas is $49. So that's easily $100 worth of sock. Moving over to the pot holder, I recognize the pattern. That's Vera Bradley, Sunlight Garden pattern, and I think the package next to it is a matching cross body bag. Vera Bradley is expensive even if you get it on sale. I don't know about anyone else but I'd be happy if someone gave be really soft, cozy socks and a Vera Bradley bag.

So much work goes into be a DM, especially if the campaign isn't an already set module. Apart from that, here in Australia, the official books with those modules he mentioned can cost like $60+ per book. Then you have to read through it and ensure you know what's happening. That's a lot of time, effort and money.

About the last story. My first thought when hearing about charging for for joining a D&D group was like; "WTF That's Weird!" I never heard about individual DM's charging the players to play in their games. The only thing close to it is the entry fee for those big D&D events or for mom&pop game shops with a gaming section. But than I thought back at last saturday. When I DM'd for a group of 5 friends for 10 hours straight. In my own home while supplying food and drinks. I also prepared for this campaign by 3D printing over 120 miniatures, including multiple custom personalized miniatures for each player. And that is on top of the time spend for preparation the actual game sessions. God knows how long I spend on that. So yeah, honestly, getting paid to do all of that for people I don't even know, sounds extremely reasonable. The DM in the story also mentioned something about paying for commisions. Which likely means they supplement the material of the campaign books by ordering custom art from artists for players/NPC's. Which honestly sounds like a great idea now that I think about it. Hmmm. That would actually be an amazing gift for my party. Maybe like an artwork of the entire group, posing as their Lvl3 characters. And another one near the end of the campaign, when they are all powered up and epic. That's gonna be very pricey, but so cool! And so Memorable.

Thought I'd share. Back in college (early 1990s, pre World Wide Web for context), I had a business class and a two-person group project. The person I got stuck with was a real piece of work. Combine a "buy here, pay here" used car salesman with a literal horse trader. The project was to evaluate a product go through the ends and outs of it and "sell" it to the other member of the group. The "buyer" was supposed to ask important questions on the product and the "seller" obviously answered them. This guy only showed up for one meeting, TOLD me to just have some questions ready for him to ask and give to him before the presentation. So I did what he asked. Questions: 1) did you buy that cologne or just roll around in the horse stalls? 2) did you actually try to drive home after that bender you soent in the bar last night? 3) speaking of last night, I saw the GUY left with. Was he a lover, or just a one-night stand? .....you get the idea. I don't remember all the questions. He was reading the questions while other projects were being presented and he was about to explode. Finally, it was our turn, and he asked the professor if we could extend our presentation by a day. I said, "I don't need an extension. I'm ready now." The professor looked confused but said no. Either present now or it's a zerp. So we go up, you can tell this jerk was not prepared but somehow muddled through the presentation. Finally, I asked if he was ready to purchase (a computer) for only $1599. He said, "tell you what, $1000 cash and we got a deal." I was surprised at first, but then he had this stupid grin on his face. He thought his little impromptu question would save him. I said "no, the price is $1599." He answered, "come on, there's always some meat on the bone." I replied, "no, not in this case. $1599 is the price, $1599 is what you pay if you want it today." He stomped his foot and actually said "do you know WHO I am?" I think he forgot what we were doing and actually thought he was buying my computer. I said "sorry, I don't, but maybe someone else can help you figure that out." The class laughed, and that seemed to snap him back to reality. He went back to his desk. I said off the cuff "this was a demonstration on how sometimes a deal just cannot be made on a purchase." The professor told us to stay after class. She asked how much time we spent together on this project. The jerk tried to put on a show of how I was just trying to take to glory of the presentation. I said 10 minutes and he told me to have a list of questions for him and left. He yelled, "yeah and look at these questions." He handed the professor the questions. She laughed, then told the jerk to leave. I got an A on the presentation. The jerk dropped the class.

If approved, the family kids writes these letters, they give you the papers to use and instructions, and send them to the address that they listed. Then, they pair you with a family to be Santa, that's how the process was for us.

It helps them buy maps for future sessions, books to expand player options, buy new modules if that's what they run, miniatures, etc. D&D is an expensive hobby. But it's so much fun. It doesn't break the bank but you can't just go to the store and get everything for like $100. If i remember correctly the 3 basic sourcebooks are like $150.

RE D&D: I've been playing for 30 years (I'm 40) and DM'ing consistently for 25. For those that may never have played, let me tell you all - writing your own Campaign Modules is a JOB! The one I did the most work was called "The Tower Trilogy". If you just focused on Book 1 "Arctic Incarceri", I spent 8 hours a day for 5 days rolling up everything for that Sunday. This meant every mob, critter, trap, NPC, piece of loot, spell, for that entire game had to be rolled-up in advance. I had to draw the maps and give myself notes. Not only that, I had to be able to improvise on the spot should my players do something unexpected. That's just everything there's books for. The rest is the writing, world-building, and thought power you have to put in to your story. Then there is **your** performance as a DM to make the stories compelling. I go the extra mile as a voice actor to study accents, slang, and unique pitches/tones/traits of each voice. Finally there's the players themselves. You're interacting with people that can be as fun to be around as family, or as infuriating as co-workers. So, OP in that story deserves to get paid. I've used DM'ing in the past to be able to pay rent, or pay off a traffic ticket, even get food provided for me (a diabetic) for the occasional reward. 20$ a week per-person is not a bad deal. The ideal party size is 5. 100$ per week. Two games becomes $200, and that makes it between $400-$800 a month. That's not enough to even afford rent in most places, so, pretty good.

The Pacas socks are alpaca wool and are about $15 per pair. My own parents used to get me things like socks, towels, paper towels, bathroom tissue, laundry detergent etc. as gifts because they knew I pretty much bought whatever I wanted and they didn't want to get me something that would never be used. While the gifts they chose seem utilitarian they at least knew I would use them. My folks are gone now and I miss both them and their ordinary, but highly appreciated, gifts.

More than that, even small sessions like we do can be over two hours long! When you consider that many movie theaters charge so much in this day and age and nobody bats an eye it can be difficult to remember that small session d&d is like going to a movie where YOU are the main character! Of course they usually aren't as blatantly of a scam/choosing beggar as that letter though lol.

As someone who does run a DnD game for my friends, Dungeon Mastering is a lot of work. Granted, I wrote the campaign they're playing so a lot more has gone into it than a preexisting campaign, but still. I do a lot of that labour out of love for the story I've written and excited to share it with them and to guide them through, but it's a lot of work. Considering the party might not always follow a script, even if they know it, you have to have plenty of stuff prepared in case they wander off, but at the same time, they might not. I don't charge my players to play because they're my friends (and they're helping me test things out without knowing it, haha) but I can see why someone would charge other people to play, especially if they're a good DM. A lot of work goes in to make the experience good for you, so pay them for it, it's not that hard, haha

My husband runs a game called L5R for a group of us, he has been running D&D for a different group (with some cross over) until the campaign ended and one of the other players took over. I run WH40K Deathwatch for him and a bunch of guy friends. (A little cross over there too.) I run a preset campaign, my husband's D&D was preset too. Both take a lot of work just reading and adjusting the material. It is even more work if you are setting up a custom campaign or having to teach new players. On top of all that, doing it online is even harder, because you can't read visual cues and it is often for strangers. I had a heck of a time doing it for people I have known for over a decade during Covid. I guarantee that if you are looking for a free or cheap online game, you are getting what you pay for. My husband tried a few and they have always either fallen apart or, in the case of the one he paid for, the GM basically verbally abused several players for privately giving constructive criticism after asking for just that.

Let's assume a DM hosts one session that lasts 6 hours. That DM most likely did 6 hours of prep to host that 6 hour session, or longer if they're not using a module. If that DM runs the game for 5 players at $20/player, they're getting $100 for 12 hours of work. That's $8.33/hour, barely over the federal minimum wage for the U.S. Let's not forget that character creation, session 0 and session 1 probably runs the DM an additional 24 hours of work or so per campaign, all of that being free labor, so the DM is technically getting paid even less than $8.33/hour. Players vastly undervalue the effort many DMs put into hosting games, especially the players who've never DMed a proper campaign before. If the DM wants to charge $20 for the service of hosting the game, you don't have to play with them, but they still have every right to do so.

I think the advice that OPS parents gave in that thread is absolutely right. When you become a parent you have to start sacrificing your wants and desires to take care of that child so whether they’re a baby in the womb this year that causes mommy not to be able to participate in sports it’s not like next year she’s going to have a full grown child who can sit alone on the beach and entertain themselves, while she participates in all of these activities. It’s going to be at least 12 years before that child can supervise themselves. No I don’t know. Maybe Opie’s parents are so wealthy that the next time they go on vacation they are willing and able to pay for a nanny to come with them or hire someone through the hotel to watch the baby. Which then would make this even more ridiculous because this woman only has to sacrifice one trip where she is pregnant and won’t be able to participate in everything that everyone else is doing but she can’t even sacrifice that one thing for her child. One trip. And it does seem ridiculous to ask six other people to completely change their trip and their plans because one of the members of the trip got pregnant. If he wants to argue they plan this trip ahead of time for everyone to have fun yeah well then why did his wife go and get pregnant and ruin everyone else’s fun. They both knew this trip was scheduled and would have known before when they were planning that getting pregnant at this time would put some major dents into their travel plans, but still did it anyways didn’t consider anybody else’s feelings or wants even though those other people were the ones paying for the vacation. That’s the biggest kicker here that I don’t even think I realize the first time I heard the story they’re not even paying for the trip, so what rights do they think they have to overrule the other 3:28 six people on this trip about the activities when they’re not even paying for any of it again the parents are absolutely right they should be thankful that they’re getting any kind of trip. I would be over joyed pregnant or not to spend two days at some kind of a day spa getting pampered. Is that really so horrible in comparison to being able to participate in sports activities. There are people out there that never get to go on a vacation that can’t afford it. They never even see another state never mind another country. And here are these people complaining about a fully paid trip to France because poor wifey will be stuck in spas and seaweed wraps and massages. Omg it will be like being in jail or homeless how awful these parents are truly cruel and demented. Hey OPS parents if you ever want to take me to France, I’ll be very thankful and appreciative and I’ll be OK with whatever events / activities you want to do.

What's wrong with getting socks as a gift? I absolutely love warm, cosy colourful socks! My mum usually gets me a pair of bedsocks every year since I practically live in the things for 3/4 months of the year and I LOVE them

The audacity to complain about Christmas gifts. Quoting my favorite Christmas special: Christmas isn’t about getting, it’s about giving!

DMing a game is harder than writing because it's like you have to write on the spot and there's so much world building involved and DMs should definitely be paid for their time. As well as many DMs have to pay to rent out a public space for games too

As someone who is with a mechanic, that kind of c/b is seriously gross. My man takes my car into his shop for any issues. IN EXCHANGE I cover the costs if it isn't under my warranty, or I cover other bills, lunch, etc. Of course, that's in a case of a cost-needing fix, not small things like a car wash that his job offers for free to all or quick repairs like a headlight bulb going out. (He does those himself to assure I am all set to go worry free, but I still bring him a drink or something for him.) Her entitlement makes that match a quick unmatch. Not to mention that small damage is at least several thousands of dollars to a BODY tech in the car service industry... YIKES OP, better run from her!

The USPS program is where people can "adopt" a family and buy Christmas gifts based on a letter the child has written to santa. I considered it one year because most families are struggling financially and making someone's Christmas seems very wholesome.

I actually LOVE socks for Christmas... I have fibromyalgia and my feet are never warm enough. Every Christmas, my mum's bff gets me fluffy socks and it's the gift I anticipate the most every year.

One problem with saying "Matt Mercer level DM" is the entirety of his games are based on the dynamic of both the DM *and* the players. Without one or the other people wouldn't think nearly as highly of the game as they do

TBF, I got two pairs of socks for Christmas, but admittedly they were Princess Bride and Mothman. Dang, I’m sad about the holiday season is over, that’s prime time for Choosing Begger gold!

The school work story reminded me of a story from my college history class. I once had a group project where we had to make a power point and give a presentation or something like that. I didn't want to do any of the actual study work for the project, and no one in the group actually wanted to do the presentation part, so I was like "Easy, you 3 do the reserach for each of the sections, give me your notes, then i'll turn it all into a power point and do the presentation for us. Super easy" Then, nobody sent me anything. They just didn't follow up. I messaged them asking where it was, then nobody responded or just told me they would get it to me before the project. Then, the day comes and they just hand me a flash drive saying "Here you go, do the presentation" I'm like yo! What the fuck! The whole point of this is i'm supposed to make it! I can't just do a presentation if you all aren't gonna include me on anything! So I went up front and made an ass out of myself while the rest of the group just kinda twiddled their thumbs behind me and looked embarressed. Like I still just don't get it. Why the hell would they make the power point behind my back when I told them that would be my contribution to the project, then expect me to just improvise an entire presentation on the day of! Like litterally the first time I ever saw those slides was when I was presenting them to the class! And like they where just a bunch of random notes essentially! It's like all 3 of them made a power point about their part then just stitched it together! It felt like that one Jack Box game where you have to do a presentation while someone else controls what pops up on the screen, except instead of being a funny game to play with friends your being graded on it!

On the point of group projects, throughout my junior and senior years of high school, my teachers would always have either a group mate review sheet or a way to mark which part of the project you did. So people who didn't do any work didn't get any credit and there was proof.

The gift from the second story may seem lame, but those are alpaca socks and they are at least $20 a pair. So that’s at least $120 worth of socks right there.

3000sqft? That's literally an entire wing of my apartment building. Like six full units. For under 300k? I may be a little outdated on house prices, but I think a 3000sqft home is gonna run half a mil at the very least, right?
