Actually, in rare cases, some 'cheaters' have remorse and regret. But in those rare cases, either the person doesn't actually cheat(IE they were assaulted or had been under the influence of drugs and had not been in their right mind), OR the person starts to try and fix things before getting caught and usually confess to the cheating. The problem isn't that they don't show regret, it's that they only start regretting AFTER getting caught. There was one OP where he cheated for a couple months, realized cheating was not what he should be doing, tried to work on the marriage, wife found out about the affair a bit down the line, and basically became his Prison Warden for 2 years. And it turns out _she_ was cheating the entire time, since before they got married, and only started showing 'regret' after getting caught herself. They are, of course, the exception that proves the rule, that normally cheaters don't regret until after getting caught. But they still happen.

Yeah! if the teacher had any common sense he would have stayed quite and saved his money so eventually HE could buy a house of his own! He was so blinded by the fact his money "payed the mortgage" he forgot to add up all the utilities he got for free! in his mind HE shouldn't have to pay anything since there is no "landlord" just his brother's friend! I wonder why he wanted to start giving his money directly to the landlord? makes me think he wanted to go behind OP to kick him out or something like that but the plan failed when he found out OP was the landlord!

  • @ostlandr

I absolutely hate to bring politics into it, but teachers tend to be on the left side of the political graph. The Left has the wrong idea that "all" landlords are evil, greedy monsters. And that housing is a human right, and so should be free. (Spoiler alert: Nothing that requries the labor of others can ever be a human right.) It was never about the rent. It was about OP being a landlord. Not his landlord, but just a landlord.

@SailorMya Yeah he thought if OP was paying the same amount he'd go to the landlord and offer to pay slightly more for the upstairs instead of the basement. He really should have looked into rental prices after getting into a fight with OP. But what did he think the real landlord if it hadn't been OP was doing with the money? They pay bills. If not mortgage on that property then the one where the landlord was living.

Wait wait wait... rent is *always* compensating for mortgage. That's literally normal. And $650/month for an entire basement to yourself and all utilities included? We're seriously calling this a *bad* deal? I'd kick the guy out and stop talking to those who agree with him. Edit: Back in like 2010-2013, I lived in a house with 3 roommates for $400/month each ($1600/month total) with NO utilities included and THAT was a steal. Add a decade of time and utilities, and $650 for a whole floor to yourself + utilities, and that's obviously a great deal.

Jessie needs to read Ann M Martin's book "Slam Book". Paige breaks up Cassie and Gooz by writing in the slam book with disguised handwriting that Cassie is a liar who didn't really go the whole way with Gooz (even though she doesn't know if Cassie ever made that claim). But it backfires since Gooz isn't interested in Paige. In fact, he's more interested in her friend Anna, and so Paige starts writing undisguised things in the book, calling Anna a "boy-stealer" and "Pretty to look at but dangerous to touch". One of Anna's attempts to get back at Paige actually causes a girl in their class to commit suicide. This story meets Heathers, anyone?

Places for rent where I live go upwards of 1500-3000$ depending on what your looking for. 1 bedroom crack den looking shit holes cost more than that teachers rent does where I live! Shit I'd happily pay $650 for rent with a smile on my face and a thank you right behind it. The only way you'd be paying less than 1000$ where I live if it was a shares house and you were just renting the single bedroom (usually used for people in college) you'd never be able to find a decent apartment for less than $1000 that actually provided privacy. Can’t be too smart if he’d prefer paying market rate to a huge corporation to fuel their profits, but not paying way below market to a small landlord to pay their mortgage for the place he’s living. I mean, what does he think rent is to a landlord of any size? It’s their income; of course they’re gonna pay their bills with it. If he has an issue with that, he should buy his own place and pay the bank so they can make a profit.

I rented out a room in my house, it included Wi-Fi, cable. electricity, water, food, laundry and pretty much everything else I charged 400$ a month. Where I live you can't rent a couch for 1000$ a month. The person complained it was too much money for the same reason my mortgage is and was low (thanks to me saving my money). FYI, I did the cooking (making sure I made food they liked even if my family or I didn't), I did the laundry as long as it was outside the room in the bin. I had the best Cable/Wi-Fi money can buy (gamers).I went out of my way to make sure they felt welcomed and cared for. It was a HUGE lesson learned. I will NEVER have a roommate or let anyone ever stay with me again. Giving people a helping hand for some reason they think it's a pass too run you over.

The rent thing... simple solution. Tell him to try and find a better deal, not to take the deal, but if he can find one, you'll consider lowering the price to match it. If you truly are charging half the standard, he won't find one. If I was in the situation of the renter, even assuming I got pissed off about "Lying" about the landlord thing, I'd do my research and figure out if it is a good deal before doing anything.

Story 1 - as a woman who's had many guy friends, i would never EVER act like your friend did when said guy friend is in a relationship. The ex bf was also clearly displaying red flags of cheating just by not stopping the behavior alone. A chick like jessie is the type of girl who uses their looks, what small personality they have, while manipulating others to get what SHE wants without care. I hope OP learns from this and finds a better friend and a better man

On the home owner story: that’s how it works. Would her friends be mad at her if she rented the room at market price to someone, that wasn’t connected to anybody they know, for them covering her complete mortgage payment? No they wouldn’t care, they would have told her good job on finding someone that would pay that price. But since the renter is a relative of someone they know, she’s evil and should be run out of town.

Hearing them tell me that growing up they considered me like their third parent made me cry so many happy tears. Handsy friend story: OP, she knows you and what you will and won't do. She hasn't grown out of being a high schooler yet and is still playing the "popular girl" nonsense and is deliberately trying to create problems between you and your bf. It's past time to tell her to back off. UPDATE 1: OP, she's showing you who she truly is. Believe her. UPDATE 2: OP, you're going to need to block your ex, Jessie and various other people not only from your phone, but your social media as well. You'd probably be better off deleting it all and starting over with new screen names, no profile pics and maximum privacy settings. UPDATE 3: Too bad it took the loss of OP to make Dean realize how stupid he had been to play Jessie's game. At least Jessie didn't win. But OP is right, she deserves better. Rent story: NTA! What in the world made him think someone else was the landlord? But I agree, your finances are not his concern, especially since he's paying so far below market rate in rent for similar places. UPDATE 1: What a spoiled child this guy is. Be sure to document everything in the apartment with photos that are time-stamped. And he's a teacher? I feel sorry for his students. UPDATE 2: After all his BS and damages he wanted to move back in? Guess he got a taste of the real world. Don't blame you for refusing him though, he was being ridiculous. Glad his brother is smarter than he is and doesn't disagree with you over it. "Dad" story: OP, you said in many ways you consider her more of a daughter than a sister. It appears that despite knowing the truth, she sees you as her father as well. Take that for the complement it is. UPDATE: OP, you're a special person and your sister/daughter knows it. Best wishes.

I’m glad OP in the first story broke up with scumbag. Both of them. Pretty sure their entire friendship was toxic and OP never knew. Jessie was clearly a passive aggressive friend who probably made OP feel as if she wasn’t worthy. Otherwise she would’ve known their behavior towards each other wasn’t normal. Jessie was probably jealous and wanted to take the BF to prove she was still “better” than OP and to make herself feel better. She needs help and OP just gets better and better having dropped them both.

"Those other girls meant nothing to me!" and similar variants, is such a common "excuse" guys use, but has it ever worked? I mean, they're basically admitting that they'll "passionately hug" anyone, regardless of if there's any passion. Maybe if you were polyamorous? Like there would be an important distinction between emotional cheating and physical cheating, maybe? However most, if not all, of these stories involve regular one-on-one relationships. If my boyfriend, or girlfriend (I'm bi and/or pan, let's not get into _that_ debate right now) ever said this to me, I'd inform them that they were a walking advertisement for cannibalism.
