Quit Your Job and Live the Outdoor Lifestyle? | Your Questions Answered
Ойын-сауық
How do I quit my job and work in the outdoors, my ideal lifestyle, and I'm 19 years old, how do I build a log cabin like you did? I answer two questions I received on Instagram this week from young guys who want to get away from conventional jobs and society and live a life of freedom and passion in the outdoors. I felt, and ended up doing, the same when i was in my early twenties. Today, the question is just as compelling to me as it was 25 years ago.

Good on you Kansas, we are living on our fourth property now, we had a farm and lost it because of the changes a change of government brought into the country, we moved on working for others and bought a 20 acre block of land, we sold it and continued working for others then bought a house, we sold it and moved to Australia this time the house prices have doubled, so now we are looking at retiring to a block of land and selling the house we are living in, this will mean we will be mortgage free and that's what everyone wants. What I'm trying to say is don't give up when things don't work out, and when you buy a place and can sell it for double the price you paid then do so and move on to the next place, remember to save all the money you can until you finally can pay cash for a place, your goal should be to own your own place without a mortgage that way no one will be able to take the bit of land away from you.

Sometimes the hardest thing is to take the days as they come. We have become a society of instant gratification so having the patience to get to where you want to be can be a real challenge. Thank you for the reminder, this video came at the right time for me.

Simple Man Outdoors yes, to an extent. For the last and a half year I’ve been overwhelmed with the feeling of wanting to live a more simple life surrounded by nature. I’m trying to set up my life so that I can retire at 50 and live on a quiet lake in Michigan.
@12maoutdoors70

@@kholmes1982 I can definitely relate to that as I also live in Michigan! There are definitely some beautiful places in Michigan to be able to retire. Maybe a little more tough to find somewhere like what Shawn has found, but in the U.P. there certainly is quite a bit of land. Are you thinking Northern Michigan?
@kholmes1982

Simple Man Outdoors, my family owns some property in the lower peninsula, about 80 acres mostly for hunting and a little farming. If everything goes well I’d like to retire there and just tend to the land. How about you?

Awesome topic. I am self employed, work from home, and make a reasonable living.... so I have no real rush to "quit the day job". But I find great satisfaction in building our little farm. I'd rather be farming than working. Some days it's hard to stay focused and I find myself out in the yard with a tool in my hand, rather than seated at my desk. I'm hoping to transition slowly from office to farm as the years pass

Wonderful advice, Where were you 50 years ago when I was 19 years old? I am awed by each and every video. I look forward to every one. I still own my little homestead in the East Tennessee mountains. I still garden 3 days a week and head to the woods camping and fishing the other 4 days. After surviving lung cancer and the loss of my left lung in 2007, I am determined to not miss another sunrise. I live each day as if its my last. I still learn from you. You are such a wise old Spirit. Keep sharing and giving your great wisdom away. Myself and many others love you and your family. Thanks. I think these sort of “how to live” Q&As are really helpful to people, me included Shawn. Just these 2 guys questions could probably actually devolve into at least a full length video. The thing that struck me for some reason is, do both or either of them want to be totally off-grid,partially off-grid or have all the mod-cons while still living and working the outdoor lifestyle...and how do they ultimately want to end-up living down the road?
@12maoutdoors70

That's true, and I thought that, too while I was watching! Do you think that a lot of people get caught in-between wondering whether or not they should blend modern lifestyle with homesteading lifestyle?
Thank you for that man. It's good to hear it from someone I know made it and it's good to hear it in a real, no fantasy context. No bullshit, no scheme. Work hard and save as much as I can, be dedicated and make sacrifices where I need to and someday I will be able to get my own little slice of peace. Appreciate you Sir!

We have to help younger generations see beyond material lifestyles. I think it's easy for younger Generations to look at an Instagram page or KZread channel and strive to focus on materialistic things instead of more fulfilling hobbies and tasks. Isn't it interesting that there has been such a trend away from traditional Hobbies or lifestyles?

A very well developed story n explanation of the way to living right .. In the bush, it is a good foot to be on.. Diversify your portfolio , I hear many say.. You have and others do that... Endorsements on products sponsorships that are paid spots.. Make things n sell them on/ on many media platforms/ markets.. You are an inspiration to many n I feel a book on the horizon, "The Shawn James journey", n " how I did / do it my way", borrowing a bit from "Old blue eyes"! Thanks n ATB from Florida!

such honesty! thank you Shawn!
I am a retired woman who has lived in the wilderness most of my adult life. I too have had to try and find ways to make money while in the wilderness. I started 83 miles from Fairbanks...It was an important life. I did that in my 30's. Its much harder then you think but the trade off is worth it. I am now buying an A frame on the river in the wilderness of Montana. I am looking for someone to help me there as it is a lot of work to move into a house i the winter. I make leather work and do massage and do cooking for people. I have woofers come in the summer and help do gardens and chop wood and help with mowing and trimming of trees. It is a beginning adventure again and I find that the wilderness offers help to you in many ways...AS Shawn said you can do this sensibly or just jump in and trust there are those around you who will help you
Straight forward and sobering. Thank you!

Great video! I've recently decided to move outdoors, myself. I'm 26, I'm sick of living in the boxes people call homes, calling the land home feels more right to me, and I'm so so so much happier outside. I think this is a new movement. This video from 4 years ago will continue to get more and more views because it will only become more relevant as people get fed up with the cost of living. Thanks for sharing your tips to inspire more people to do it carefully, so they don't rush into anything they aren't prepared for.
