Permanent Rose by Winsor & Newton has been a long time favourite. I have since branched out to try Daniel Smith & DaVinci but still love Permanent Rose. I agree in regards to the Lukas brand and find it a bit chalky. I picked it up early on when the store was out of W&N and that was my first lesson that even though the pigment numbers are the same it doesn’t mean the paint colour will be identical. Great as always.

I love W&Ns permanent rose. I also have the DS quin rose and Horadam Ruby red. All v similar. Makes a great pairing with transparent pyrrol orange DS or transparent orange W&N from which you can get your bright fire engine reds but transparent. It's great in a triad with transparent yellow py150 and Aqua from W&N. If I had to be limited I'd go with the Brights as you can always dull them but you can never go the other way.

Some of these are staples in my pallette. Can't live without them. So gorgeous. Thank you ❤️

I have the Da Vinci Red Rose Deep and Alizarin Crimson Quinacridone. Love them both. That Permanent Red Violet is a pretty color.

I came up with similar results and preferred the DaVinci permanent alizarin crimson over Daniel Smith. In fact I prefer the whole line of PV19 family of cool reds but do love love love Daniel Smith’s pyrol scarlet-Wow!! I totally recommend them and the quin coral. Of course they are my only and my favorite warm reds on my palette.Thanks again.

I too love ❤ Daniel Smith pyrol scarlet, but haven't bought it, just sampled from dot card. I just received Quinacridone Coral because I was wasting so much paint mixing my own... still want a little more Pink to it, but so happy. Winsor Red reminds me of Scarlet... I have so many "near" duplicates I'm trying to control myself! Ha! Thanks 😊 for sharing, a California Gramma...

Daniel Smith Quinn Rose pv19 looks very similar to the WN Perm Rose in my swatches. M Graham Quinn Rose PV19 is slightly brighter. Thanks once again for your great water-colour comparisons. They are really helpful.

love how the da vinci look here! W&N helped me appreciate quinacridone rose, I used to only have magenta in my palette as a cool red but now I need both XD My favorite pv19 paint is from Mijello though. I often use it as a primary in CMY palettes. I love using pv19 with greens for that complimentary contrast. it also mixes lovely skintones.

Oh, and the Lukas..it seems a bit strange I guess, not that pigmented and the opacity is weird. But maybe its not that bad for soft florals.

I definitely think the Lukas has it's uses. Just not so much in the kind of painting I like to do at the moment. I've not tried the Mijello PV19. I imagine it would be very bright?

I have WN Permanent Rose on my botanical palette, it is soft like velvet. DaVinci Red Rose Deep on my mostly DaVinci palette, and DaVinci Aliz Crimson on my desktop landscape palette. Oh, and Mijello, which for some reason I dont have in a palette I’m using. Must get out and try! I paint lots of flowers, so I use these colors a lot.

Ah yes I imagine I would use them a lot more if I painted florals. I wonder how the Mijello compares to these? Mijello paints are usually very bright.

Schmincke has a PV19 very similar to W&N called Ruby Red.

Super helpful comparison. I love PV 19, since cool reds and warm purples are my favorite colors :) DaVinci does many beautiful ones, thanks for comparing them! Daniel Smith also has about 4 to 5 more PV 19s as well. Both companies offer a great selection of variants (there's also "pink" and "red" variants of the Quin pink pigment, accounting for some of the differences we see here). I really do like the hue of the Van Gogh! I have never tried them but it'd be a good one to check out.

Da Vinci Red Rose

Of these I have the DS Quin red and the VG Quin rose and I love both of them they are two of my favourite paints. They are quite different colours and work different in mixes even if they are technically the same pigment! I want to get the da Vinci Alizarin Crimson! I think these are all lovely. I have a few other pv19 paints and I use them all! They mix based in the hue rather than pigment code I’ve found. I have the VG Permanent red violet (also pv 19) they are great for botanicals, birds, tropical fish, fantastical clothing and dresses, fantasy art (eyes, costumes, clothing, Tiefling skin tone base, dragons, etc) I live to use a variety of colours and different artwork I make uses different pallets rather than my overall body of work having a colour pallet. I depict more directly what the colour is (or would be for fantasy) and need/use all my many paints. If I paint a fanart the colour should be as close to the subject in my preference. If I paint a flower or a hummingbird or a tropical fish. I really need the brights. I also love these colours personally! Also I like to use non lightfast (fugitive) pigments with awareness and know that art I sell won’t involve them but I still use them in my work such as needing fluorescents sometimes so flowers are the right colour, etc.

I have the Da Vinci Red rose deep and the Alizarin crimson. I love both! I have red rose deep on my main palette, but I also really love Daniel Smith quin rose, it’s more pink than the da Vinci red rose deep . I love the look of the Van Gogh here as well as the W&N amd Lukas.

W&N Permanent Rose is my favorite

You live in Thailand! OMG I MISS Thailand!!! I "lived" there in 2000. I went there on vacation, but stayed for 9 months when I realized exactly how far I could stretch my money there. I fell in love with the people, the food, the weather. I love that you are expected to smile when you greet anyone, that you are expected to haggle over baht at the market, and that you are expected to bring a small gift if you are invited to someone's home. Small considerations that would really go a long way to a more pleasant society if we could just learn those simple manners here in CT! It always bothers me that whenever I pass someone on the sidewalk I will smile and say "hi, how are you!" and all I get in return is a scowl and a flinch like I'm about to rob them! You invite some people to your house and they all of a sudden start to treat you like you are their personal slave ("I'm the GUEST, you're supposed to make me feel welcome and get me whatever I WANT!)!!!! Yes, I miss Thailand......

Imma give Da Vinci a go, it’s really hard to get in the UK but that Alizarin Crimson Quinacridone is so dreamy.

I have a (maybe silly) question: How does a single pigment end up looking so different? Is it because of the composition of the paint itself, the fillers its with?

It's all down to the way it's processed. Things like particle size or heating a pigment can change the color of the paint produced. I'm sure there are other reasons for the differences too.

If you watch the guy from Alchemical Arts who makes pigments and paint he's really informative on this subject. Plus I love watching him make various hues of pigment. Fascinating stuff.

Yes, PV19 has a range from violets to roses then to middle reds. I've never been fond of the violets but I love the darkest red, like Perm Alizarin from DaVinci (I have it) and the rose hues. Daniel Smith has one called Quinacridone Rose that's very beautiful and Schmincke has a rose one called Ruby Red, that's similar to Winser and Newtons Permanent Rose. Thanks for sharing!

VG is my recent love, but I don't have any of your another paints examples

My favorite PV19 is M.Graham Quin. Rose. The hue is similar to that of the W&N Permanent Rose. I also have Blockx Rose Pale Lake which is more pink and QOR Quin. Red, similar to DS. I love the QOR Quin. Violet, it is close to your Red Violet. I also have a Blockx Magenta and it's more a Blue Violet. So many PV19...

Haha! Many people love their reddish pink watercolors. I just don't have much need for them in the painting I like to do. I'm sure that will change if I ever start painting more florals in the future.

I do like the Alazarin crimson substitute, it is quite close to the real thing. I have several quin rose/reds, they are lovely but not that special as they are ubiquitous, but the Alazarin is just useful both as a mixing colour and as a stand alone.

Excellent video as always. The PV19 on my palette is the Van Gogh Permanent Red Violet Red. It’s nice nut too violet for my taste. I’d like to try the Quinacridone Rose and Quinacridone Red versions of PV19.

The rose red deep by Da vinci is a main mixing color on my palette. I think I need the alizarin crimson too.

I have the Van Gogh-wow is it bright. I may have to get the Da Vinci perm rose or the Rembrandt.

Yeah unless you paint either a lot of flowers or abstract, it is hard to find a use for these colors. But they are so beautiful!

These are valuable swatching videos, but do you think you could not paint over the names? Because some paints as you know are opaque and/or dark and it is hard to see and compare the paints when some of the names are covered. Thank you

as far as I know PV19 have 3 variant, one is the red version often call Quinacridone Red, the other is a magenta version often call Quinacridone Rose or Permanent Rose, this version is suppose to be a replacement for Rose Madder Genuine, and finally a violet version often call Quinacridone Violet or Permanent Violet the red variant of PV19 is quite rare, only a few brand offer it, usually when a brand have PV19, it's the magenta variant and the violet variant.

I just split them in to 2 variants as it is on handprint.com. Gamma Quinacridone, which is the lighter valued, higher chroma red and rose paints, and Beta Quinacridone, which is the darker valued, lower chroma violet paints. Handprint hasn't been updated in a long time though so you might be right.

Id like to try the Schminke or the Rembrandt. I prefer the Rembrandt one, as I prefer the more purple look. I have Daniel Smith's quin rose and Turner's rose red. I use them both for mixing. Most times I use the Turner paint as it's bolder. Both are a "rose" as apposed to a "carmine". Tfs.

The PV19s I have are that DaVinci Alizarin Crimson and Daniel Smith’s Quin Rose. For some reason I’m not keen on DS Quin Red.

@@JayNathanWatercolor lots of people have it on their palette… it’s not a bad colour, I just don’t have room for it as I can mix pretty close to it with my Pyrrol scarlet (DS), quin lilac (W&N) and quin rose (DS).

I own DS and DV Q red rose and only use them to make orange and violet. A little goes a long way hence they last an eternity

funny, but da vinci has that *red rose deep* AND a *quin rose* that looks almost identical. have no idea why they bothered? i mean, pigment and LF is the same also. mysteries. anyone know??

kusakabe is good for anyone looking for an environmental-friendly watercolour range as they do not contain any heavy metals. they have dot cards of the full range available and you can order from them directly. anyway... personally, for a pv19, i like mine to be the red version as i also like to have a PR122 in my palette. and since the PR122 is similar to the violet PV19, the other 'red' in my palette would be PR209 or the red version of pv19. howeeeeeverrrr, if i was using a limited palette, i'd get rid of the pr122 and use a single 'magenta' and that would be the rose pv19 and since i started out with rembrandt's quin rose, i tend to favour that although is weak compared to other brands. daniel smith's quin rose and shinhan's quin red are similar and more pigmented so i prefer those. thanks for the comparison!

You're welcome. I think one magenta/rose would be enough for me 🤣 I didn't know Rembrandt's PV19 quin rose was weaker than others. I find their PR122 to not be particularly strong either.

I never understood, how is it possible to make so different colors out of the same pigment. Especially with the PV19 the same brand has very different colors. Schmincke and DS have 3 different PV19 and 2 are red and 1 is violet.
