Burnt Sienna Watercolor Comparison - Winsor & Newton - Da Vinci - Rembrandt - Holbein - Schmincke

In today's video I'm going to be swatching and comparing my burnt sienna watercolors. I did a burnt sienna comparison last year but since then my collection has expanded somewhat. So it's time for another one.

The advantage of the W&N burnt sienna, in addition to its glowing transparency, is that it grays out perfectly with their French ultramarine. Traditional burnt siennas (Pigment brown 7) are significantly more opaque than the ones made with transparent red iron oxide PR101.

Thank you so much Nathan! I love Burnt Sienna, and really enjoyed this video. My favorites are also the Holbein, for a more golden BS, and the R. Szmal It.BS when I want a more reddish brown. Another favorite is Daniel Smith's Quin Burnt Orange. While not a Burnt Sienna, I often use it in place of one, especially for autumn leaves. It is absolutely gorgeous!

The van Gogh burnt sienna I use do not have black in it. It's a single pigment paint made of PR101. When thinned down it looks more like an orange and has a very nice transparency. I've tried using other burnt Siennas(pbr7) but I prefer the van Gogh version

Rembrandt's Burnt Sienna has a place in my heart - and palette. ^^ Even though it's not as glowing as most of the other brands, it has a natural texture and a soft granulation I quite enjoy. I'd love to try Da Vinci's, Holbein's and M.Graham's, or even W&N's. They are just gorgeous!

There's large brown colors made by rare brown pigments in Schmincke so their choice to make the burnt sienna is very strange. In France, it's so difficult to find Da Vinci or M. Graham water colors. 😢 Thank you for this comparison.

In my Palette I actually have 3 different Burnt Sienna's Turners Mission Gold Single pigment Burnt Sienna made with PR 102 and Da Vinci's. In this way i have a very orange one in turners, Da Vinci is my favourite much more red with an almost pink undertone which I don't think was effectively picked up on your camera. Mission Golds came in a set and I didn't like it at first, it was very dull with a yellow undertone but I use it like a burnt umber instead and it works great. I also have a tiny tube of Holbein which is very similar to the turners except it granulates less.

I used to use Winsor and Newton's Burnt Sienna, but I have switch to Jackson's art Venetian Red which is made from the same PR101, except it's more red leaning and less orange.. which means when mix with Ultramarine Blue, it's produce a dark with purple undertone which I think it's more interesting than just the grey the usual Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine mixes.

I think I remarked something along the same lines on your last vid, if it isn't made with PBr7 it isn't burned sienna. And it is kinda weird Mijello can only make it from a 3 pigment mix 😳, or else cement...? Good reason for me to avoid that particular brand altogether. And though the colours don't look bad, I kinda dislike having black in it..

Those are so different they almost make a palette! I like them all i think. The da vinci looks great. I mostly use pr101 but have a couple of pbr7 based as well. For pr101 i use w&n or schmincke, they just glow. For pbr7 i use white nights. Unpopular opinion alert: I have daniel smith pbr7 as well but im not a fan 😅

That's because I never had a pBr7 Burnt Sienna until then, I was using the W&N for years, for my brown pen & ink illustrations. the DS PBr7 didn't layer well, it granulated, it lifted..it was a hot mess when I tried to use it the same way 🤣 But I do love the mixes with ultramarine, so I learned to use it in other painting styles ^_^

That Roman Szmal is lovely too. So many brands, so little ready cash. Oh well. Eventually I'll get to try them all, by which time there will be 100 more brands to try. I also have Winsor & Newton's, but it irritates me because it's the wrong pigment. I have my swatches sorted by pigment number so theirs is with the reds instead of browns.
