If I want transparency it's a raw sienna. If I want opacity and aggressive dynamism, it's yellow ochre -W and N professional grade is the best!

I like yellow ochre of any brand on how they're an essential to portrait and landscape painting.

I think I prefer the ochres to the siennas too. The only raw sienna I have is Daniel Smith Monte Amiata Natural Sienna, which a lot of people rave about. I agree the Mission Gold, although strange, looks appealing to me and I see how it could be versatile in a micro-palette. It reminds me of DaVinci Gold Ochre a bit, also nontraditional but a very pleasing color - PY 42 + PY 83.

My absolute favorite! I had a half pan from a small set & just last week got my 1st full tube. I prefer it to all the other raw siennas & yellow ochres.

The Winsor and Newton artist grade yellow ochre is the best I've used. Wonderfully aggressive, it will plough into a strong dark wash when needed and produce some lovely effects as well as lightening up the area without causing a "cauliflower"

Of these, I like the Rembrandt in looks. I have M Graham yellow ochre and Daniel Smith burgundy yellow ochre. The Daniel Smith is hard to rewet, but the M Graham is lovely to paint with. They are both PY43. My older Mission Gold yellow ochre #1 is marked as PBr7 PY42 PY150. It's a nice color, but I try to avoid more than 2 pigments in a paint.

Daniel Smith's YO is pretty transparent and the Verona Yellow Ochre by DS. The Burgundy Yellow Ochre I do not have but looks really pretty (DS) and transparent. I think they're all PY 43

Cotman, Mijello and Turner's are the only yellow ocher I own. Don't know why but I have a hard time keeping clean mixes while using yellow ocher. So, I stay away from mixing but love using it for dull sunlight.

Thank you for the comparison. I like the Roman Szmal best, it's the color I associate in my head with yellow ochre. The other ones are either too orange, or too high-brightness (Mijello), or in the case of Schmincke, too raw-sienna-ish.

I've always used yellow ochre rather than raw sienna if I need a more red/brown yellow, I can always add just a touch of a red earth to adjust if necessary. You might want to try the transparent gold ochre PY43 by Roman Szmal, it has become my go-to yellow ochre. A little lighter and brighter, so mixes some beautiful greens, but still earthy enough for my landscape and urban sketching needs.

I really like that you include the student grade in your reviews! The Cotman holds its' own in this comparison. I recently got a hand mulled half pan of the Mont Amiata Sienna from a small outfit in India and it's absolutely divine, one of my favorite colors at this point. I'll have to compare it to the DS. It's nice supporting small vendors though.

Van Gogh and Rembrandt are my favourites. Oh! Cotman Yellow Ochre is very similar to Van Gogh. But now, I replaced them with a Cotman Raw Sienna.

Very informative-thank you. I have the Van Gogh. It suits my needs at this time. I substituted it for the Cotman to use in a class I'm taking. I also have a very small pan Of Holbein-it's quite lovely. Were I to buy another it would be the Rembrandt. Like Jenn below, I prefer my DS Monte Amiata Natural Sienna. I frequently use it in place of yellow ochre.

I prefer yellow ochre over raw sienna. I agree, the Rembrandt looks great! A good balanced yellow ochre. Love the Roman Szmal as well, followed by Schmincke. As for new ochres you might like to try, M. Graham makes a lovely one. Da Vinci as well 😊 Not sure how expensive those brands might be where you're at though 😬

I actually do like Mission Golds yellow ochre that you swatched out but maybe not to use as a yellow ochre-i actually even have this one (and the yellow ochre #2) but haven't tried it bc i was turned off but the added PY150 but now I think i might pull it out and try mixing some greens with it...my fav yellow ochre in this list is Schminckes..My fav yellow ochre of all time is actually from Daniel Smith which is a little on the transparent side while still having some Yellow Ochre opacity. Anyway great video and thanks for sharing. Much ❤

I love the schmimcke and roman szmal, personally. I don't like when they're TOO orange so for the reason, the more neutral schmincke wins for me.

Like the Raw Siennas, always so surprising to see the differences side by side. I like the Mijello mixture too, it mixes some very nice greens. I have the Mijello single pigment #2, and it is SO OPAQUE, plus my tube leans just a touch brown. I like WN and Daniel Smith the best of my tubes, they are not nearly so opaque, but you might consider them to be weaker.

I painted a fresh swatch of the Mijello #2 next to my Cotman, and they are fairly close. However, both of them are really opaque in heavy applications. With more water they are just fine. If Mijello is pretty reasonable where you are, I’d say go for it, unless the other brands are cheaper.

I only have a Winsor & Newton tube of yellow ochre. I don’t like it and have judged all others by it. I swatched it on Arches, and the mass tone looked like dirt. 😝 Even diluted with water it didn’t have a nice color. On Strathmore’s 400 cellulose watercolor paper, it swatched a more interesting yellow, but meh. These swatches look great. Maybe yellow ochre isn’t so bad! I like the WN gold ochre.

Very nice paints! I have only used the W&N (both Cotman and pro), the Mijello no.2 and White NIghts. I prefer the W&N pro so far, but most times I just use a transparent raw sienna to avoid opacity. I'd like to try the Rembrandt yellow ochre sometime, it seems beautiful! Now, I'm curious, do you use transparent yellow oxides (usually pr42 as well) the same way as yellow ochre?

  • @JayNathanWatercolor

I do yes. I used Rembrandt's transparent yellow oxide in the past. I liked the color but found it a bit weak.

Great video. Thanks for comparing the yellow ochres to the raw siennas. Both colors amaze me at the variety of pigments used and the color differences. Id like to try the Rembrandt because almost all the yellow ochres Ive used have been fairly opaque. Humm. Transparent oxide vs yellow ochre vs raw sienna? 😂 Decisions. Decisions. 😲😲
