In June, 2019, I drove to New York City to see The National live. For most of my six-hour trek, I listened to their music-a perfect companion for a long and lonely drive. I got to this album when I hit the city and crossed the George Washington Bridge as this song played. The sun was setting behind me and I could see its fading golden rays stretch across Manhattan as the metal grates rattled beneath me. It was a beautiful moment and I will always think of that when I hear this song.

This song makes me cry. I was listening it when told me that my grandpa died, and now has a deeper meaning. I want a video for this masterpiece.

Honestly I’ve been a fan of the National since I was in high school, now I find myself in tune with their mood, I’m older, in the army, and my wife is staying in a hospital right now to stay on top of her mental health and good god I miss her. This song just makes me think of her more and hope she’s experiencing the healing and care she needs

I listened to this song every single day when I had to distance myself to someone I loved dearly and after I broke up with them and oh the weeping and yearning this brought. The screeching violins at the end really brought some catharsis as it mimics and noise and pain swelling in the head and heart. The song just holds you as it plays out like a swelling scream that leaves you empty and ragged but relieved, like how it feels after a good cry.

When I separated from my ex, at the times that the kids would be with him I’d often go to Walmart during the last hour they were open (it’s open til 11 pm which is 2 hours later than anything else here) to buy one thing or nothing… I still do this years later. I realized one day that I was lonely, but also too guarded to want to talk to anybody, so it allowed human interaction while being able to also not speak to anybody if I so chose. A few months ago I heard the line for the first time: “I still go out all the time to department stores. I’m not afraid of being alone, I just don’t know what to do with my time “ I love that whether I’m right or not, I always feel like I know what Matt means. They are coming to a small venue an hour from my house on a June 5, which I explain to people as a miracle since they are usually an ocean away.

This is one of those songs that hits you with some really specific emotions, reminds you of something you try not to think about. You know exactly what this song is saying and, for me atleast, it hurts a lot.

This song is the emblem of I Am Easy To Find short film, I always wondered why they changed some lyrics.
