Quiet firing: What you need to know about the latest workplace phenomenon

You have probably heard of the term “quiet quitting,” which is gaining traction among workers who are tired of going above and beyond for little return.
Now, there’s a new workplace phenomenon that’s the flipside of that.
Essentially, “quiet firing” happens when employers demoralize workers enough that they decide to leave on their own. This can happen in various ways, such as not responding to requests for promotions or wage increases, increasing workloads to an unmanageable level, or by snuffing out opportunities for career growth.
Global’s Anne Gaviola explains how quiet firing is impacting workplaces.

This happened to me like 2 months ago. I was promised 5% commission on a sales job I acquired. When I brought the company a big ticket that could have easily brought in $100k+ they told me my new rate was 1%. When I told them it wasn’t in my contract I was let go and received nothing. I was told that they were “restructuring”. I am willing to go on record for this

This is not "the latest phenomenon" but is in fact the CAUSE of much of the so-called quiet quitting. I and people I know have worked for many companies over the last few decades who treat employees this way, then act surprised when the employee shows little motivation to strive at work.

Why use euphemisms? Quiet firing: Treating employees like cr@p and making them so miserable they are forced to quit for their own sanity. Quiet quitting: Doing a very good job for the hours that you agreed upon, rather than working so many hours you end up working for less than minimum wage.

I dealt with this prior and a bit during the pandemic to the point where I couldn’t handle the chronic stress, but I got lucky enough to get out of that department in 2021 and save myself from quitting due to having a bad manager using psychological warfare and passive-aggressive tactics (favouritism, nepotism, unfair shift time changes, etc) he tried almost everything with a smile and an excuse. I can't believe I lasted 3.5 years under that manager. Don't give in whenever you know you're being pushed (smoked) out to the point where you're losing your sanity, try to do so on your terms and in the safest way possible, if you gotta get away from a toxic boss/manager who's trying to quietly make you quit.

My boyfriend is being quiet fired right now. He's been at the organization for 15 years and most of his subordinates are making more than him! I've never seen or heard of such a thing. It pains me so much, but his personality doesn't help the situation. While he's extremely hardworking and knowledgeable, he can be quite blunt and by-the-book. The other leaders & supervisors are spineless who slack off and cover for each other. They have the title but don't do the job, which is so common nowadays. I wish he wasn't so invested that he could easily walk away.

This is a stupid issue. If someone doesn’t want to do extra work it is called just doing your job. It also means you probably won’t get a bonus, extra shifts, overtime pay, or promotions. But if someone was to do more or “go the extra mile” at work it means you probably means the supervisor and boss seeing value in the employee would want to keep them by increase wages, extra work, and promotion. But to expect a promotion when they are competing against all the other workers there for doing the basic level seems foolish. If I went to work standard hours never lifting a finger for extra work I would expect my pay check and nothing else. However if I did extra work, took extra shifts, went the extra mile and someone else got promotion who just did the basic work. I would be looking for a new job that day. There is no point in working at a place who does not reward extra work. Just like it would make no sense to expect extra benefits just for doing basic work. There is nothing wrong with just doing the work you are assigned with the time stated. There is a disconnect if you expect a promotion is automatically given just for showing up though.

No leader likes an employee that speaks their mind no matter how good of an employee you are. They like people they can control and wouldn't question them. Living in Florida this new trend quiet firing and quiet quiting in the workplace makes it hard for everyone managers and employees especially Florida being a right to work state.

Quiet firing is a made up buzz word for actions that have been happening for a long time, company management setting the employee for failure in bullying and harassment by the use of false documentation against the employee.. It's just being done more in regards to TRYING to counter current trends. Also to note, the repeated documentation about the false claims that the company makes against the employee, can be used for legal backing IF needed to protect the companies (false) firing of the employee. Some states in the U.S.A. have laws about the firing of employees that can protect the employee. Also bullying and harassment that is also the case. Also know, that some states are "right to work" states, that companies don't need ANY sort of hard documented reasons, so make sure you research the state laws where you live. Quiet Quitting is the result of companies taking advantage of and asking too much of their employees and giving them very little in return, for the extra efforts that they have done. The companies burn out their employees, and it is actually the companies fault.. Not really a "Gen Z" issue at all. If you keep getting pulled into office meetings for things that are NOT your fault, know that you are being targeted and it may be a great time to either save up a lot of money to live off of and for legal representation OR find yourself another job and just move forward. Unfortunately, there are always very wicked people out there that work for companies that are 100% cruel to their employees.. That's the real world we live in.

Sorry I'm all for this. I have a co-worker who is doing the bare minimum. So annoying, our work is pooled so she's basically creating a massive backlog of work that me and everything else has to manage. I'm all for loud firing.

Your bosses are using you to make up for their lack of management skills and inability to adequately assign work. Your coworker sucks, surely, but your bosses are no better. Blaming her alone is playing the game on their terms. Playing into their hands. Demand a raise.

If you want her to do more then you need to pay her more. This isn't rocket science, kid. Smart people with dignity don't work for free.

News flash: Risk vs Reward .. its a thing, why risk mental health and financial insecurity for a business that doesn't care about your well-being? Yes. You can be successful at something but what good is it when you are broken by the end of the process? Work to what you are paid for.. nothing more. No business deserves your time and energy that way.

I worked hard at all my companies, always in the top ranked employees. All you get is more work load for a pittance more, just take the skills and move on, I make way more now.

Anyone taking the approach of quiet quitting, is only putting a nail in the coffin of their career. There is a balance, but this is a childish and short-term way of thinking, that will lead to no success.
