Something people never really note is that Goro Miyazaki never wanted to be a film director for the studio in the first place; the guy actually wanted to be a landscape architect. He was pretty much dragged into Tales from Earthsea by one of Studio Ghibli's producers and only carries on at Studio Ghibli because he knows it's what everyone expects him to do. I feel like Hayao Miyazaki's cold attitude toward Goro's films is probably in large part because he knows Goro's heart isn't in them.

@@aolson1111 I'm conflicted about this too. There seems to be a widespread speculation that Goro is nudged by a former high ranking staff member in the studio particularly for making Tales from the Earthsea. But Goro also stated that always wanted to do animations and follow his father's footsteps (brightlightsfilm.com/daddy-issues-anxiety-goro-miyazakis-tales-earthsea-hayao). I believe the absence of his father's guidance is a real problem, however I also don't think he's "pushed". not sure why people find this funny, i honestly agree. it would be even better if they made the film together to strengthen their relationship. and it doesn't have to to be a movie directly about their lives, but more a symbolic representation. i doubt it would happen though. When it comes to family bonds/relationships sometimes the most obvious solution is a challenge to face, and its even harder sometimes to admit to themselves there's a problem in the first place. hard to change a dynamic once its set. Im sure these types of parents want to express love to their children, but because theyre so self critical towards themselves they extend that to their kids, and it feels unnatural to do the opposite. idk if what i said makes sense put into words.

Honestly, I think the character models have potential, but they're missing (at least) one of the core aspects of animation: Squash and stretch. The characters look like they're trying to emulate cartoony styles, but are limited to realistic movements. They're stuck in the limbo of looking like they should be bouncy and fluid but have their feet firmly planted in realism instead, not fulfilling either role fully. It makes a disconnect between what you'd expect to see in a film like this, and what is (not) actually happening.

@@manuelalbertoromero9528 Miyazaki is pretty anti-technology, and his disdain for CGI probably stems from that. Ghibli did not have a CGI division until the 2010s, and when they did, Miyazaki simply said that it was the artist that mattered, not the medium. To me, it seems like he still does not like CGI, but he'll allow some CGI projects by younger animators. There may be more Ghibli CGI films, but I'll doubt they'll become the norm, especially in light of the failure of this film.

Goro IS talented! He's a really talented architect! He made puppets for the Earwig team and they're lovely and expressive. I think if he were to channel this to animation his strength would be in puppetry/stopmotion, and he could design beautiful models/puppets and elaborate sets. I think that could work for Ghibli, in fact, it could be Ghibli claiming stopmotion for the Japanese animation field again. I know the Rankin-Bass films are technically already Japanese since a Japanese studio did all the stopmotion work, but how many people know that? It's a shame no one has called this out to him, it's such a cool and unique avenue for Goro to explore, even grumpy Miyazaki might have to give a tacit nod.

Hayao helped with the screenplay and let his son at it and it felt like it suffered the same as Earwig. The ending fell flat. Completely. From Up on Poppy Hill? Better but again, Hayao helped with the screenplay. Goro was a landscaper before this and he even helped make the Ghibli Museum. His talents and heart I think lie elsewhere and I think he wants to make his dad proud. Idk not to sound shady but I hope he stops animating and does what makes him happy.

I honestly don’t blame Hayao. Goro just needs to find what he is good at and step out of his father’s shadow. It really doesn’t seem like he is cut out for being a director like his father. From Up On Poppy Hill was alright, but his other two films were not so good. He isn’t going to be able to outshine his father. That’s pretty much a guarantee. Hayao’s shoes are simply too big to fill. He is one of the most accomplished filmmakers in the history of animation. Goro was far better as a landscaper, and he did an excellent job working on the design of the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka. He didn’t really want to follow in his father’s footsteps anyway.

Very fair critique!! This was based on a book that Diana Wynne Jones never got to complete before she passed, and that may be the reason why so many questions are left unanswered. I think that the movie was overall a good time but that it really was a side project/experiment for Ghibli to get into the realm of CGI. It's a short, sweet, made-for-TV movie! In my review, I researched how we got here and dove into Ghibli and Goro's journey to Earwig. It primarily was due to Goro wanting to find a way to have his own voice shine through despite working in a field where his father's shadow looms so large. I think he has a lot of potential as a storyteller if he continues to grow from his films! - Dee

I fully agree. Just got done watching this and I honestly kept expecting some more conflict to spring up between the 12 witches they mentioned earlier in the film and earwig having to use her charm against them to save her mom, or that the reveal of who her mom was would happen sooner and she decides to go find her. There were a million things I kept looking around the corner for and it just never happened. I also wasn’t a fan of Earwigs personality, thinking there’d a be little growth towards the end but nothing of the sort happens. She’s essential the same from beginning to end, just knows some spells now. Very disappointing to say the least.

A few things and miss information in the video/comments: Earwig and the Witch was finished before Diana Wynne Jones died. It was her last completed booked. (Tale of Time city was the one that didnt get finished, just a few chapters shy that her sister finished, and sadly she was working on planning another in the Howl's Moving Castle series) Miyazaki walked out on Goro's Tales of Earthsea for a cigarette, and returned after to finish the movie. He was critical because his son had no animation experience before being allowed to direct a feature film. He also never wanted his son to get into animation/directing like he was doing. [He was filming a documentary at the time that captures all of his thoughts and moods, and yeah he seemed like a tough guy to be around] I also think it also had something to do with his own love of Earthsea as he did art and concepts based on the novels. Miyazaki did have his hand in From Up On Poppy Hill. Maybe too much. Apparently board heads went over Goro and got approval for things from Miyazaki and when he wanted something changed his son didn't want to change, he would go to them to force Goro to change it. It was more of him taking charge on that particular movie. The choice to adapt Earwig, such a short story book was a perplexing choice. They added elements (such as the band and the mother) that were never in the original and they didnt know what to do with them. I agree it was starting to get interesting and then it ended. The book was different in that it didn't bait you with this mother connection. It was just a girl adopted by a witch and demon, and her wanting to learn it so she manipulated her way into doing it, ending on her trying to figure out how to convince her friend from the orphanage to come over. Short and simple. I know your video was short review from last year ( I'm working through your back catalogue), but as I happen to not only love Jones' work, and seen the documentary and did research into this book because the movie perplexed me, I wanted to bring in my two cents.

Personally, I think 2d animation just looks better because you can stylize the characters more without getting creepy uncanny valley vibes. Facial expressions can be bigger than the face, bodies can deform to show exaggerated movement, hair can literally be a couple of squiggly lines and still look "real" in context. I love hybrid 2d and 3d stuff like Spiderverse too. It really looks like art. But too many 3d animators try so hard to make stuff realistic instead of making objects and characters serve the story. Case in point: The Good Dinosaur.

In essence her saying "I'll control you" is her way of saying "I'll make you like and care for me!" - and why she wouldn't phrase it like that? She is a small spunky witch but most importantly an orphan. I mean even her pranking Yaga was not out of spite - she had a reason, this woman did hurt her feelings after she tried her best to be a good helper. But other than that? Actually a pretty nice kid. In the end this film suffers the most from being incomplete - like we got only first act, skipped over second 6 month and never saw 3rd act with resolution.

I actually loved Earthsea. I thought it was an awesome film! Okay, so I finally found a place where I could watch Earwig for free, and I actually REALLY liked it! Sure, it didn't have that traditional charm that all Ghibli movies usually have, but it was still really fun, and made me laugh out loud at some parts! The Mandrake was a cute character, and I liked Bella Yaga and Thomas at times, but Earwig herself was indeed a spoiled brat, and not once through the movie did I really care for her safety. And I get what they mean that the end seems more like the beginning or middle, but that could also be in the book for all I know. So from a non-professional standpoint, I'd say give it a chance! The animation's not too bad once you get used to it. But my problem was I could _see_ it as the original style, and that gave me a weird headache from trying to see the thing that wasn't there. But yeah, I thought it was super fun!

I can see it , but at the same time: 1- Studio Ghibli never made a series before iirc? Only stuff to be shown at their own museum and those are more short shorts. 2- A movie setting up a series needs to be broadly advertised as such. 3- The author of the book died, Earwig was her last book. I'm mentioning this because she did have a series of books with characters from Howl's Moving Castle in supporting roles and that looks like it'd be a much better setup for a series. 4- By cutting the helping around the house fluff, this movie could have been condensed into a 45/50 minutes special 1rst episode. With all this said... i do like these characters. The Mandrake is a legitimately mesmerizing fella and Earwig's attitude makes for a very fun protagonist. Let's hope they can do better for the series if it doesn't get cancelled.

Goro Miyazaki IS capable of making directing great films. I feel like most people don't know that he was the director of From Up on Poppy Hill. It's one of my favourite films, I give it an emphatic recommendation. Anyway: I wasn't interested in this film from the start, because it was CG animation. Not because the CG work was shoddy (of course it would be less polished compared to, say, a Pixar film, who have decades of experience in it) but because to me, hand-drawn animation is part of the soul of Studio Ghibli. I don't care if it was a movie directed by Hayao Miyazaki, the legend himself: if it's not hand-drawn it would feel that fundamentally, something is missing. That's just my take. P.S. Hayao Miyazaki definitely has been a lacking father. But if it means anything, it's actually kind of typical for him to be extremely critical of animation in general, not just the work of his son. I've read the book "Starting Point", which is a collection of interviews he's had, and he's said on multiple occasions he has walked out of the theater because he simply couldn't cope with what he was witnessing. I remember him being unimpressed with the work of Max Fleischer... and Disney. Especially Disney.

Every time I think of Studio Ghibli the one thing that comes to mind for me personally is like a kind of fantasy of a Topcraft-ish Ghibli interpretation of Lovecraft's Dream Quest. The way they express abstracts visually, like in Ponyo, makes me feel like they could perfectly grasp the fever dream like progression of Lovecraft's unfinished work in a way that would solidify how strung together it is and the way it feels whole despite the state it was discovered in.

"Earwig"'s characters look like they're in front of their backgrounds, rather than like they might interact with them, or even be in the same world. And the animation shows some of the problems I see in a lot of beginning CG- the characters move between "rest" and "expression", and everything in the movement between them is all about getting them there, without a lot of space for the idiosyncrasies of actual character.

All the expressions they have can be good at times, but the body moves in a very stilted way, which gives it this suppressed feeling to their overall designs. It's like their being held back.
