Quick Tip: What's "Good Enough" for a Self-Defense Pistol?

Спорт

Almost everybody who owns a gun, especially a handgun, says that at least one reason for owning it is self-defense. But what constitutes a "good" self-defense gun? Brownells Gun Tech™ Caleb Savant is joined by special guest Hank Strange to talk about deciding what kind of daily carry / self-defense gun is right for you. With a daily carry gun, the size of the gun itself, the kind of holster you choose, and how you dress for your daily activities are all mission-critical considerations. This gun is typically carried concealed, so are you comfortable with your chosen carry method AND will it keep the gun properly concealed?
A good daily carry gun should (1) fit your hand, (2) have the largest possible ammo capacity in a gun that you can carry concealed, (3) be RELIABLE so it'll work if you need it to defend yourself, and (4) come at a price you can afford. Hank talks about the price "floor" for a decent concealed carry pistol. Hint: you get what you pay for. But remember, there's nothing wrong with a used gun. It's great if you can test fire the gun before you buy it, to see how it handles and how it fits into your shooting style.
Hank and Caleb get a little confessional about their own favorite carry guns. The Glock® 43, SIG P226 Legion, Walther PPS, Browning Hi-Power, and Springfield Hellcat come up in the discussion. Factory stock, as it came out of the box, or with upgrades? How many rounds should you shoot through a carry gun before you're sure it's rock-solid reliable? A J-frame revolver's a great carry gun, especially for women, right? Is a cheap gun like a Hi-Point a good investment? The guys' opinions on these topics may surprise you! They also weigh in on gun store kibitzers (every store seems to have at least one, doesn't it?).

This was a good discussion. When I first got into handguns about 14 years ago, I really knew nothing. I bought a Hi Point .45 because it was significantly more affordable. Not long after, I bought a Hi Point 9mm. They were fine, I never had any issues with them and I shot the 9mm pretty well. But as I learned more about things, I realized where they stood in the pecking order and recognized that I needed to do a little better if I intended to bet my life on my sidearm. So I sold the Hi Point .45 and put that money toward a Taurus in .40 S&W. Yeah, I know many would say I only moved sideways, but I knew my brother had a Taurus revolver that he loved, so I assumed they were good across the board. It didn't take long to learn differently. I shot the Hi Point much better than the Taurus and I liked it better. So the Taurus was sold as well and the money from that formed the beginning of my fund for a Walther PPQ, which is still one of my primary carry guns. I now share your view that, with firearms, you absolutely get what you pay for, but I had to learn that for myself. I no longer have the Hi Point 9mm, though I sometimes wish I did, but I was able to use that experience to educate myself and move up to something better as I could afford it. I don't give people a hard time over what they have. For all I know, that's all they can afford and I was once there myself.

Nothing wrong with Taurus nowadays. My first cc was the G2C and I still have it as a backup/wilderness carry. Taurus did have a bad reputation for a while but they upped their quality control and produce an affordable quality firearm for the price.

It is absolutely necessary for any gun I own to earn my trust, regardless of the manufacturer. Every gun I buy goes through a 750 to 1,000 round test period with the last 500 shots having no mechanical failures. Even during the past years ammo shortages, I just finished putting 774 rounds down range with a pistol I bought in March. It has had no issues, so, now it will go into my carry rotation.

My wife is 5'2", carries, practices, and is proficient with a 1.875" airweight j-frame. She picked it out. She has shot 1911's, Glock, Sig, Beretta, and dozens of other automatics. She likes the J frame. She recognizes it may not be the most comfortable to shoot but the simplicity of use, weight and reliability is what makes the choice. Its a carry gun not a range toy. She also recognizes shes not going to be engaging multiple targets at 10 yards or greater. Its a "get off me" gun.

A lot of people like to dump on Taurus and some of that criticism is or was deserved. But I have a lot of respect for Taurus, I’ve had 3 of their revolvers. The 689 6” 357 was the most accurate centerfire I’ve ever shot, rivaling my Ruger P512 bull barrel. Taurus has come a long way. They aren’t the same company they were 20 years ago.

My G2 has ran 9000 or more rounds, back when 1000 rounds cost the same as 3 boxes of 50 rounds today. I barely try to jump in there and defend them because that gun has lots of parts swapped and stripped to the frame to polish and clean every piece. Most folks buying a sub $300 gun is going to take it that far apart and polish anything outside of the feed ramp.

I think so as well. Palmetto State Armory (PSA) in South Carolina, though known for their affordable but quality AR-15s, also make a Glock 19 clone for $300 that is well-made and reliable. The modern Taurus pistols work great as well. Does spending more get you more? Sure, but the incremental benefit tapers off after a certain point (maybe around the $500-600 mark) -- better to spend that extra money if you have it on training, ammo, and practice/range time.

Very good discussion but you left out a vital part of the equation: a holster. Yes, you need one no matter how you plan on carrying the gun. Even for pocket carry where a holster 1) keeps your booger picker out of the trigger guard while drawing, 2) puts the weapon in a consistent position, and 3) reduces pocket lint in the action. Well said on the J-frame! While a wonderful weapon, but it is NOT easy to shoot well. Takes a lot of practice.

I agree! Many top end holster makers take 3mo to 12mo due to high demand! 🛒 You can get polymer styles like Safariland or a kydex rig. Kydex comes in different colors, designs, thickness levels. I own a few kydex rigs. You need to get a well made durable holster that fits YOUR gun! Avoid the cheap nylon rigs and gun show trash. 🤭 Dont put a $800 gun in a $8 holster! Main brands are: Galco, Milt Sparks, Mitch Rosen, Kramer, Ted Blocker, Don Hume, Muddy River Tactical. Many like A IWB but I still go with the regular OWB type holster, standard height.

What a pleasant surprised to see Hank Strange - Lifestyles Of The Locked & Loaded on your channel. I have to say that the recommendation to shoot a gun first before buying it is the most over recommended suggestion that has the least applicable reality. A visit to any rental gun counter at the range will have guns that are four and five years old. They don’t have any of the newer pistols unless you are at one super spectacular range that supplies newer designs for rental.

I have a couple of different brands that I had her try, they were chambered in 9mm or 22 LR. As almost an after thought, I pull my S&W M&P Shield 45 from its concealed holster and asked if she would "like to try this little hand-cannon?". She loved it. And has done very well with it, in range visits since then. It's definitely not the pistol I would have thought someone with little handgun experience would have chosen.

Interesting video. I also carried Sig P226 for years. Last year I switch to P320 RXP X-compact (after firing more than 1,000 rounds through it). But I changed the grip module to a Wilson Combat Carry II model. It fits the X-compact 3.6" barrel, but allows a flush fit 17-round magazine. I wasn't as concerned about the two extra rounds as much as the slightly longer grip handle fits my large hand better. That grip module also felt a little more similar to my P226 I was accustomed to.

I actually work at the sporting goods department at a Walmart around Philly that sells guns and the number of people I've given advice to is staggering. Many come to buy a shotgun for home protection but have never even held or shot one, an if they did it probably wasn't indoors. I usually advise them to go to one of the local ranges and rent a few things before they decide. I also break down pros and cons of a shotgun, as well as the pros and cons of a long gun vs a handgun. One of my go to recommendations is an AR or a pcc. But I tell them not to take my advice as gospel and not to buy something because someone else told you to. An if you still want to buy a gun now I'm more than happy to sell you one. But I encourage them to try looking at other things, and if at all possible, shoot a gun before they buy it. But most of all they need to buy something that suits them and they're needs. An if, after trying a few things at the range they still want a shotgun, I'll be here to sell them one. An if we don't have that model in stock I'll add them to the department call list. Because in the end I don't just want the people I interact with to be armed with whatever Walmart has lying around. I want them to have the best gun for them and their situation. Even if I didn't sell it to them. An yes I take my job at Walmart more serious than most. Partially because I actually give a shit but also because it's just a side job to get me out of the house. Because my normal, holster business, job consists of me sitting in a room working by myself all day. So I enjoy interacting with people. Especially new and current gun owners. An I definitely enjoy inviting people into the pro 2A community with more effort and caring than they expect. It's nice.

But I've been watching your videos ever since. Keep up the good work man. Edit: so I just noticed youtube unsubscribed me from your channel. First that's happened to me. Funny thing is I still got your videos in my recommendation list. Weird. So yeah I'm re-subscribed now. Stupid youtube.

Good for you. I have tried to always recommend folks going to a rental range and taking pistols for a test drive before buying one. I have seen lots of bad advice given out.

I bought my first handgun back in 1982, a brand new S&W 19, 6 inch. Still have it too… I’ve been fortunate to have been able to start with something pretty darn nice and very reliable. And, have been able to continue that tradition throughout my years (S&W, Early Kimbers, H&K, and Sig) so, I thank my lucky stars for decent jobs which allowed me to buy, trade, sell for these excellent quality handguns.

Glad y'all covered upgrades. I usually avoid trying to mod anything out the box. Except for magazines but in general out the box quality is important to my and why I sold my initial Taurus G3 once I got my p226

@G Soap I would generally agree but for my case if I get into a potential defensive encounter I don't want any mods on the firearm itself to be cast against me in a negative light, light trigger pulls for primary example. Secondly, vulgar messages that give off the intent of malice.

Thanks Hank and Caleb! Good enough is often a .357 snubbie w/4 speed loaders, sometimes good enough might be a 36 year old Ruger, or a Max9, or a Glock 19 or 43. Depends on the circumstances, and what suits my thoughts and clothing for the moment I am leaving the house. I do know, barring an ammo malfunction, the .357 will always fire, and with the speed loaders, I have 25 rounds of .357, and most self defense encounters are over with no more than 3. Ultimately, I like to shoot, and I have yet to fire a hand gun I hated and would not shoot. For carry, reliability is the #1 factor for me, with being able to put rounds where I want them on the target being a very close#2.

Good enough for me is an S&W 5 shot .357. I grew up shooting squirrels with a single shot .22and don’t intend to waste any shots at anything I can’t hit. The snub nose is what I call a ‘Belly Gun’. Stick in hiss belly and shoot. If he’s much further than that, I’m gonna ambush him.

Great presentation for not only the new shooter but really anyone who is planning to purchase a firearm. As a handgun shooter for over sixty years and a product of the bulls eye competition days, my criteria for evaluating a hand gun is a little from you two gentlemen. First is total reliability. Second is a superb trigger. Third is everything else.

Totally agree that time year & situation dictate which gun I care. In summer I usually carry my Sig 238 Black Nitro with an extra clip, but in fall & winter I will carry either my Glock 19 or my S&W 2.0 both chambered in 9 mm….GREAT VIDEO GENTLEMEN!

At the moment of need; what ever I can get hold of will have to be good enough. By choosing to carry I am making sure it is reliable and I have confidence in it. Confidence in my ability with the gun from many hours of handling, practicing and shooting. Not a big fan of Smith but the M&P plus is comfortable and reliable for me.

When I had a customer that came in and wanted to spend a couple hundred dollars on a cheap self defense gun I always asked the same question. What’s your life worth? I told them if it’s a range gun then I wouldn’t balk at getting a cheaply made inexpensive gun. If you’re using it for self defense I always urged them to hold off and save a few more dollars to spend on a well known reliable handgun like Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Glock, Springfield, Sig, etc.

I own a few used firearms. I bought a new cheap 9mm for concealed carry and it had a break in period before I considered the pistol dependable enough to carry. Lesson learned: you get what you pay for. I upgraded to a Ruger Max 9 pro and it came out of the box reliable that was amazing, compared to the cheaper pistol. I also had a small break in on one of my new large frame pistols but it was not near as long as the cheap pistol.

I worked a gun counter some at a local sporting good store. Exactly what was mentioned here...was more about fitting them to something they could afford and get the most for their money. Some people knew already what they wanted that makes it easy. I usually ask them about their firearms experience and knowledge before trying to get them into anything.

I really enjoy used firearms. If you are worried about looks past crazy damage, look into refinishing like Brownells Alumihide (sorry sp). But I find often that I get a couple hundred off of tag price for a few rounds through it. Even big stores will allow a bit of haggling too. What this allows to, is to buy something you want that is higher cost new, but attainable at a used price. Great video fellas.

Good points but for me the most important thing is how well can you control the gun you use. I've had guns that feel great but for whatever reason couldn't get them to stay consistent. So after much testing I picked the shield. Not a round nerd eight is good for me it was more important for the full grip that pinky has to be on the grip or its a no go. Nice seeing Hank and again great points.

    1. Has to go bang every time you pull the trigger. 2. Is accurate enough for the user to put 6 rounds into a 3x5 card at 7 yards as fast as they can line the sights up on the target. 3. Chambered in at least .380 ACP or .38 Special 4. Holds 6 rounds or more. 5. Weighs 20 ounces or more 6. If your willing to carry that handgun, be willing to carry a spare magazine or speed loader for it. Usually the magazine will fail before the ammo does, and the ammo will fail before the handgun does. The spares there not for the extra rounds, but for if Murphy tries to take you out of the fight.

Once saw a salesman at a small gun store sell a snub nose .357 to a little lady about the age of 65 that weighed about 100 lbs wet. And then told her she had to use .357 ammo that was way too much for her small frame. There had been break ins in her neighborhood and wanted protection. After seeing this I never went back that store.

It just all depends on the person. We are in the golden age of "carry guns" any major manufacturer will have something suitable for carry with a 99% chance it will function properly.
