Quick Tip: Must-Have Spare Parts for Your AR-15

Спорт

We asked Brownells Gun Techs Steve and Caleb bring their unbeatable combination of wisdom and good looks to answer an important question: What spare parts should I keep on hand for my AR-15? Gas rings and buffer spring wear out through normal use, says Caleb. And he has a handy rule of thumb for telling when that buffer spring needs to be replaced. Most likely to fail on the bolt / carrier group are the extractor spring and pin. The cotter pin and cam pin can break, but more often they get lost when the BCG is disassembled for cleaning. Steve says he's tried but has never succeeded in getting an AR-15 firing pin to break.
Downstairs on the lower receiver, have spare springs and detents for the pivot / takedown pins. AR-15 hammer and trigger springs rarely break, but if you're using lighter-power springs, keep standard-power spares on hand. If your rifle stops working, swap in the factory-spec springs to find out if the problem is the gun or your ammo. The buffer bumper pad (say that three times fast!) can wear out in certain circumstances; Caleb explains. Steve's Wisdom: If you've upgraded your trigger, keep the original one as a backup spare. For the other small parts, pins, and springs, keep spares on hand mainly because they can get lost when you've got the gun disassembled for cleaning. Why lose a day at the range when you can reach into your ditty bag and swap in a spare in a few seconds?
Are there any parts the guys haven't mentioned? If so, tell us in the comments below.

It's a convenient wat to keep your spare parts from getting lost. Detent comes out of the receiver...It will disappear in seconds. But if it's safely store in a complete rifle it's much harder to lose.

The only parts that is most likely to wear, break, or loose over time is the buffer spring, buffer bushing, gas rings, firing pin retaining pin, bolt head, extractor spring and o ring (for carbine gas length). Magpul pistol grip was designed to house small spare parts and they designed a deeper hole in grip to allow a bolt head to fit inside and enough room for a small reclosable bag to secure small parts.

It doesn't break often, but after a lot of use the buffer retainer pin can have the small post on top break off. Of course it will drop into your lower receiver and can make your trigger inoperable as well as complicate your attempts to separate your upper from the lower when the buffer spring leaps forward. I have replaced mine with the enhanced retainer from LWRCI. It's not expensive and is far more durable than a stock retainer pin.

I agree with all of whats said. I will add that I've seen the face of the buffer chewed up or dinged up by the buffer detention, but that was cured by removing the barrel, milling the face of the receiver where the barrel extension meets the upper with an inexpensive face mill to move the the barrel rearward, inturn moving the bcg rearward enough so that carrier contacts the face of the buffer just enough to stop the slap, which inturn reduced noise and brought the groups to a tighter tolerance on paper. By doing this your taking pressure and contact of the buffer face and buffer detent out of play, accuriseing the action and also getting far better alignment of barrel, barrel extension and bolt and carrier inside of the upper. End mill sold and purchased from Brownells. Thankyou for tools.

The tip of the buffer detent pin likes to break off & that little piece that breaks off likes to foul up your fire control group. When I was shooting highpower, I saw that at least once a year & that little piece can lock up your trigger & make opening the rifle a real pain because the buffer extends into the upper.

I have removed the buffer tube to update a stock a few times. The buffer retaining pin and spring tend to want to fly to the far corner of the shop. Fortunately I have a magnet on rollers built for picking up nails from the floor, which makes finding these parts "easier". But the parts that don't want to hang around are always good ones to have a spare of. Thank you for another informative discussion.

Interesting thing with the firing pin, a friend of mine once bought an Aero Precision pre-built rifle, standard 16" barrel with carbine gas system. After about 100 rounds, the tip of the firing pin broke, as it was flatened and too short to make reliable contact with the primer, resulting in light strikes. After changing the firing pin, everything worked just fine. At no point was anything else wrong with the rifle, it performed as expected before the firing pin broke, and after replacing it. I have no idea what caused the issue, but it was an interesting thing to see, and I'm glad it was as simple as that.

Regarding 1:17 & 2:27 replacing the bolt on a firearm, bolts are supposed to be manufactured to specifications. However when installing a new bolt for the chamber of an existing or new barrel, then the head space needs to be verified with the Go and the No-Go gauges. Otherwise firing a round in a chamber with excessive head space can result in a dangerous internal pressure catastrophe. On the other hand, insufficient head space can cause failure of a round to go into battery for the chamber of that barrel. Watch Steve Ostrem's head space videos @ kzread.info/dash/bejne/opeKyo-RcrKye8o.html & kzread.info/dash/bejne/mJ5sp8hmctvRhrg.html

I was in the military at the end of the M16A1 era. As a unit armorer, I never saw a bolt or bolt carrier break and these rifles were old. I know it happens but I never saw it except in pictures where somebody left a cleaning rod and patch in the barrel. Not pretty. What you need is a complete spring kit. A couple of extractors, and maybe an ejector. The biggest thing that generally got broken was the retaining tab on handguards from repeated assembly and disassembly.

Whether you think you need spare parts or not, get it anyway. One, if something needs to be replaced, you already have it on hand and don't have to wait. Buy a new one to replenish. Two, people rush to buy when you have an anti-2A president as we have already experienced with Obama or a crisis situation arises. Buy when things are normal such as prior to this COVID-19.

Cam pin, I’ve noticed some of mine show excessive wear and deformation from normal semi-auto operation. Where the cam pin contacts the bolt carrier can slot ends. Some have shown cracks. These are the factory mil spec cam pins, from DPMS, Anderson Arms. I have replaced them with titanium mil spec cam pins. I haven’t had the excessive wear problems since. These are Carbine length AR-15’s 16.5” barrels. Changed to mid length gas system barrels and have reduced the wear significantly with a16.5” barrel. Thank you guys for a great video very informative. I have quite a few A.R. 15’s
