Why don't you cover the back of your original drawing with graphite, then use the ball point pen and then you're done. I just use a 2B pencil, scrumbling the back of the drawing with a layer of graphite.

I do not use the transfer process often, but that sounds like it work very well too!

trace with a fine point and use a graphite pencil on the back then trace the front with a pen so you can easily see the difference and have a more precise outline to follow. a sharpie, really?
