HOW TO OIL PAINT - Transfer Any Image in 6 Easy Steps (Exclusive Vine Charcoal Grid Method)
This oil painting tutorial is a lesson on how to transfer any image to canvas in six easy steps. I haven’t seen this VINE CHARCOAL grid method explained anywhere else.
Why has the vine charcoal grid method been kept a secret? You got me - because I consider it to be the most efficient and effective way to transfer a photo to canvas or to transfer a drawing to canvas.
Follow along with this art tutorial as I detail and demo, step-by-step: 1) How to use an L-shaped viewfinder to compose and crop your image to the proportions of your canvas. 2) How to divide your image into a grid of squares without a calculator. 3) Exactly what kind of vine charcoal to use for the grid on your canvas. 4) How gridding helps you copy an image to canvas. 5) How to “fix” the drawing on your canvas without spray fixative. 6) How to get rid of the grid on your canvas without an eraser.
Keep in mind that everything I show you about gridding in this step-by-step art lesson can be used to either transfer a photo onto canvas or transfer a drawing onto canvas. And can be used to transpose any size photo or drawing to any size canvas (or whatever type of support you like to use). Enlarge, scale up and copy larger or reduce to smaller.

ABOUT ARTISTCHRONICLE:
Dedicated to teaching you the skills needed to draw and paint successfully.
Hey! I'm Don Stewart. You'll notice that I produced a lot of the videos here on the ArtistChronicle channel in 2009 to 2013. Where have I been? Well, in 2013 my priority became getting better at teaching offline. But now, in 2020, I'm online again! With renewed zeal and dedication to providing quality how to draw and how to paint video lessons!
This video is one of the latest and more in this new format are coming soon. But, whether you watch the latest or videos from a decade ago, I genuinely hope you find them all to be informative - and any kookiness to be entertaining. Hey, learning should be fun! You remember more :)

I love how you teach, Sir. You deserve more subscribers.
The art of his presentation is priceless❤
That bonus tip just made my whole life.
In addition to the bonus tip, what also works is drawing lines diagonally from corner to corner to find the center. Then draw a horizontal and vertical line through the center (erase the diagonals also). After that you can divide these resulting rectangles in half to your heart's content until you have the grid you want.

This also works for parting of foods, an example is if you are baking bread and need yeast or butter but the bought cube is twice the weight needed, simply cut corner to opposite corner instead of guesstimating where the middle is. Need a quarter if the original amount? Make a cut from longest side of the recently created triangle, from the longest side in a 90 degree angle to the corner with the widest arc (the shortest line from the top of the pyramid to the base). And so on.

I thought this same thing when I first started watching, but the thing is, the squares will be different sizes in the end. This method he showed works good if you have a specific amount of grid lines you want(something that isn't divided evenly by 2 or 4, etc.) or if you have a certain size grid you want to do.
@artistchronicle

@@gozinta82 Thanks for your comment! So... I attended a traditional art school and the grid method I show in this video is the method I learned there. I have since seen the diagonal method and my first impression was that it was different, but pretty impressive. It's an especially good choice when doing a mural. But I go with what I know. Which is the square or rectangle grid method. Also, to me, something about it just feels right and is more esthetically pleasing. But, both methods have value. Probably just a personal choice in the end.
Wow! It's truly been years since anyone has actually given me some new technique for my art that I haven't seen before. I was skeptical there was anything here new to me. But I got TWO really helpful techniques out of this. I'm so excited to put them to use!

@@dianagibson4923 Vine charcoal is Wonderful stuff! I've used it for lots of things. Another way to transfer would be to use the vine charcoal on the back of the sketch, and then use the sketch like a carbon paper. Easy, but can be a bit messy.
