Quick Review | 2019 Kia Forte | Warm and Fuzzy

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We take a quick look at the new 2019 Kia Forte from the press launch in Pittsburgh, PA. While the American car companies are bailing on compacts the push is strong from Kia, Hyundai, Honda, and Mazda. The new Kia is changing what should be expected from affordable cars. Will this help to keep smaller sedans relevant?

Does everyone forget the biggest competitors to this car, the Corolla and Civic, also have CVTs? I mean, yea, the Corolla/Civic is proven, but it seems like everyone makes a big deal(good or bad) about CVTs unless we’re talking about Toyota/Honda

Thank you for another great review video. I am one of the car enthusiasts living in S. Korea. Hyundai and Kia returned their directions for endurance for the daily car. The previous version of ELANTRA (AVANTE in S. Korea) and Forte (K3 in S. Korea) focused on the specs and digits. However, maybe you guys probably know, GDI engines had some general issues. Lots of complaints in S. Korea and demands of higher fuel efficiency let them develop IVT (CVT). It might not be the best in the whole car industry, they announced that they really tried to improve both the fuel efficiency and endurance. For example, they changed the belts into the chains. And like he says, they emulated the CVT logic programs like the traditional automatic transmission. Here in S.Korea, the overall reputation of Forte (K3) is pretty good (Actually, S. Koreans have some prejudice of domestic cars as not good.) So, I think this version of Forte could be somewhat successful in the USA too.

I don't understand why manufacturers don't embrace the CVT transmission as it is. There's no need to decrease the fuel economy because they want the CVT to act like an automatic transmission. If they optimize their CVT transmissions to perform like a true CVT and if it gets amazing gas mileage, people are going to ignore the CVT and buy the car because of the great MPG's they can get.

I have a beef with CVT's pretending to be an automatic transmission. Manufacturers are programming CVT's to do this just to pacify people who have been living with automatics their whole lives. The problem is that the drivetrain is now compromising efficiency and power, just for the sake of the perception. A CVT works on the principle that an internal combustion engine runs most efficiently at a certain RPM given the load applied to it. A real, uncompromised CVT will allow an engine to hold whatever RPM is required. This is what gives CVT's the edge when it comes to acceleration and fuel efficiency. By making a CVT emulate an automatic transmission, their biggest advantage is being negated. It's silly, and I disagree with it.

Port injection? Mock me if you will (I know the inherent advantages of direct) but port is just simpler, lower stress, easier to maintain, and you don’t get the same constant clatter of the direct injection engines. I’m not sure how it’ll play out with fuel economy or performance and the like, but those older port fuel injection engines just seem quieter and simpler. I’d take it. The CVT is off putting at times, especially since the Elantra retains the 6-speed automatic, but it’s not the end of the world. They are smooth transmissions, and in a simple commuter and transportation appliance, that’s what you need.

CVT issue comes down to longevity for me. I drive my cars until the wheels fall off and a CVT will die much sooner than a normal automatic. I do like that this one supposedly has a chain instead of belt but even so I don't see it lasting very long by comparison. I'd go Elantra for that reason alone. People that replace their car every few years will probably be fine.

Yea that's the problem though. there is no downshift, just fake rev matching, etc. That's not what a CVT is for and I feel like that's just adding drive train loss for the sake of not pissing people off. Either give us a straight up CVT because it's better than an auto (minus reliability), or give us a regular auto or manual option. I hate the idea of the "sport shifter" especially in something like a CVT. There are no gears to downshift to, just hanging a rev at a certain point to get more power for a bit. It's silly.

That CVT has some really quick fake shift points. I'm impressed by that. Does it fake shift under all throttle input, or just during harder acceleration? This new Forte is based on the current generation Hyundai Elantra. Same architecture. Same 2.0L engine. The differences are in styling, suspension and steering tuning, as well as auto transmission. The Elantra uses a 6-spd automatic. It's very telling to me that the CVT equipped Forte is rated a full 4mpg better hwy than the Elantra with 6-spd auto.

I've had my 17 Elantra 2 years 3 months. 37.000 miles now. Has been flawless. Fully loaded, everything works perfectly.very comfortable , Fit and finish are great. I consistently get 29 30 in town. And between 37 to 39 mpg, depending on whether I'm doing 70 or 85. I'm very happy with it !

@Fleetleader101 Had I bought it new, yes. In my case, no. I bought it used with 4,000 miles (for some dumb reason, it wasn't certified). Since I had taken care of the car well, they goodwilled it. I paid $2K flat, and they took care of the other $5200 in parts, labor, and diagnostics. In retrospect, I still felt like I got stiffed a bit, but as long as it doesn't happen again, I'll be just dandy. If it does, I'll be filing a lawsuit. Shame, it's a great car otherwise. Hyundai on the other hand is giving out engines left and right. Under warranty or not.

Love my Kia and do not see it as an entry level car?... Maybe? After a lifetime of boxy SUVs glad to be back into a regular car. Mine's the Forte hatch with turbo and since it was bought about this time last year, is a 2017. It has a DCT. Which I was apprehensive about at the time. For me it's hard to understand why something like a CTV has to operate like a manual gear box? My last 25 years are with automatic transmissions. I have driven a manual in that time but really overall; so long as the car can haul ass, what does it matter? Cheers

It's difficult to see this latest compact car effort from Kia and not compare it to the current Mazda 3. For example, while this Kia has a CVT that simulates the behavior of a torque converted six speed automatic, the Mazda 3 has an actual six speed automatic, and the fuel economy ratings between the two are equivalent. I also don't know why Kia made the decision to equip this car with a torsion beam rear suspension when the class leaders offer independent rear suspensions.

The Optima is so underrated! I currently have a 2017 Forte sedan and I'm looking forward to the new Forte5 Turbo when my lease ends in 2 years. I'm wondering if you can bring the price down considerably on an Optima SX to get it near a Forte5 SX price tag. Here in Québec, midsized sedans are almost a thing of the past since compact sedans and hatches are more than enough of a car for most people. The Optima SX is kinda rare because no one buys them and I'm sure there are plenty around sitting in my dealer's lot just waiting for some one to have a good deal!

ok, fine, you put a CVT in it that emulates an automatic. Can you put a button for turning the emulation off? Heck, hide it in the screen with 2 "Are You Sure?" pop-ups. I'd like to see how this thing actually behaves as a CVT. But then I remember that Mazda makes a pretty descent and simple slush-box. Hmm

In my experience with the cvt in my sentra, a cvt will last if you dont drive like a lunatic. Basic commuting it will be fine. But it just can't keep up with somewhat aggressive backroad driving. The constant braking and accelerating bogs it down and ends up keeping it around 3500 to 4000 rpm and it is extremely slow to react to input. Also it seems my car specifically has issues with the CVT heating up to a surprisingly high temperature after aggressive driving. which brings the concern of longevity. But in the end it's a base model sentra and isnt designed for fun it's designed for commuting and errands.

I think the WRX automatic is a pretty good CVT. You can let it drone and accelerate quickly, or be slower and do fake shifts. I haven't tried a fast CVT car unfortunately. Only tried the 2017 civic (non-turbo) and that seemed slower than the 2017 Mazda 3 2.0 L.
