Quick Flight - Ercoupe Spring Flight in the Clouds

Taking the 1948 Ercoupe into Auburn, and around the Oroville Dam, Northern California. Lots of snow and cloud up in the Sierra Nevada mountains, makes for beautiful views. Vintage Aviation.

Enjoyed that, amazes me you seem to be flying with the hood open a bit, even in these temperatures…harder man than me for sure.

Your panel is very similar to mine, except that I have no digital gear. I have added ADS B in and out and a dual power outlet for my Ipad. You and your family live in a very beautiful area of the world. I live in Boise, Idaho. I would love to get down your way someday. You and Juan both are very well known at my airport in Nampa (KMAN).

Thanks, Lynn. Idaho is very beautiful as well. I hope to stop by Boise one day, I'll let you know before hand!

I Love Clouds! Thanks so much James for the flights. Glad you have them, encouragement for the the next spring. As a soaring pilot for more years than flying power, I loved soaring under the cu's and one flight out of Livermore I soared up the front and over the top of a building cu! More exciting than I can say......never had the opportunity to do it again. Thanks nice to see you flying! Happy Thanksgiving to your family. Best, Toodie

Very relaxing, Was that the Oroville dam and spillway you flew past?

Hey John, yes, that was Oroville and it's spillway. I was on the way up to Orland, CA. A quiet airport I enjoy going to every now and then.

Do you have a good alternate source for fuel flow and performance charts? The manufacturer charts are not the most user friendly for my student.

The E manual has some useful takeoff performance numbers. With my O-200, I plan for 6gph, and know I go about 100mph. That's about it. One of the downsides (or maybe, upsides!) of these 1940's aircraft. Search for other popular aircraft, with the same engines. i.e. Cessna 120's, 140's, 150's. They are close to the Coupe. Thanks. That's what we've been using as well. Going to try and make our own once his digital flow meter is installed. @@JamesGood

James: Thanks for posting the factory PIM for the 1948 415-E. It suits my 415-E perfectly except for the wooden prop. However, all the mods to my plane have made a difference: the alternator, lightweight starter and lightweight battery now make mine six pounds lighter than the factory W&B! I loved the lack of music in this video, especially in the clouds sequences. How do you get the background engine noise so low? I’m patiently waiting to see your report on the camping trip to Oregon and the Museum at McMinnville in the Warrior the day after I left Diane, Charles and you. But keep your priorities straight and continue to place family first. Larry

You're correct. It's electric, and was getting very over-sensitive. I think the bearings have worn out. I don't really need it, with my electric artificial horizon, so I keep it switched off now. I should probably pull it out, but the 'ball' is still useful, better than the electronic one.

May I ask what is the altitude you are cruising at?

For which flight? In the pattern, I'm at 1000 feet above ground. Enroute somewhere, it varies depending on winds, direction, distance I'm going, terrain underneath me, etc. Maybe from 2000' to 10000' above ground.
