That was a brand new carriage bolt. I wish they would explain how remove an OLD carriage bolt that has rust on the threads, and spins the ENTIRE bolt when you try to remove it (as is in 90% of all cases). It's rare that you ever have to remove a brand new bolt. And no one has figured out how to prevent an old bolt from spinning with the nut, so removing them is next to impossible.

Thanks for your feedback! We recommend starting out with lubricantion two days before attempting removal. Apply WD-40 to the connection of the threads and nut several times throughout the day, you should try to get some lubricant all the way around the nut. After two days of repeated lubrication, the nut should loosen. You can also try using a grinder to cut a slot in the top of the carriage bolt, and then use a flat head screwdriver to hold it straight in place while you work on removing the nut. We will see if we can put a video together demonstrating some of these ideas for you.

evNEXT That's what I was hoping the video would be. A carriage bolt in metal that had spun and rounded off the underhead shank, and nut was stuck to the threads. Maybe they tried, but KZread wouldn't allow it with all the swearing. 😀

There is a piece called a "Torque Washer" that can be placed under the head of the carriage bolt in wood that will prevent the head from spinning and also prevent the head from sinking into the wood.

not all of us get to have bolts out in the open or in wood -- cut off wheel cut nut in 1/2 when heat wrench can't be used

I have a bit more niche problem: removing a load bearing bolt. I have a loft in my post war garage. It looks professional and sturdy, made out of 2x6's. I think my great-father-in-law built it. He was not a pro, though I think people who grew up w/out TV were a bit more capable than now days. Since I have been storing a lot of stuff up there I mentioned it to a co-worker of my wife. He's a nurse, but does carpentry as a hobby, and suggested I take the bolts out of the corner one at a time and attach a 4x4 pillar to take weight off of the roof. Out of frustration I inadvertently discovered the hammer method shown here but it only works on 2 of 3 bolts. Plus, I produced some sawdust doing that. I don't want to make the holes bigger and suspect I'll do a lot more damage if I hammer out the one taking most of the weight. I saw another video using a grinder to make a slot for a screw driver but I only have a hand drill and a dremmel saw - IDK if the saw can cut it, and IDK how I'll hold a hand drill steady at 90 degrees to make an effective slot anyway. I admit, I'm being lazy - I could probably tap in some nails to guide a hack saw... but it's 8' up and I'd rather write a really long youtube comment. It is a powerful drill, so I was thinking I might attach the end of the bolt like a drill bit and turn it until I expose the square under the carriage head, but will this damage the threads to the point that they carve out the hole?

Wow. What utopian world was this video made?! As you know, 99% of the carriage bolts will have rusted nuts. When you try to remove them, the carriage bolt will simply spin with nothing to grab on to to hold it secure. THAT is what we all need to know how to remove!

LOL I agree....thats what my issue is. The square that keeps it from spinning is round...so it just spins. Cant get anything on it and it sits up in the tunnel of a snowmobile so no way to get a cut off wheel up in there...IF the track was out no problem BUT I cant get the track out until this carraige bolt comes out. Why they use those friggen things Ill never know. They always do that. Use a bolt so if it ever needs to come out its easy not a PITA! Talk about an unperfect world...thats the one I live in!!!

How do you remove a carriage bolt when you have no access to the nut side? I’m trying to remove a bunk bed that someone used carriage bolts on and I have no way of taking them off. What I’m looking at seems to defy physics. I see the top of the carriage bolt, but somehow a goat must’ve phased into the metal pole to tighten it from the inside of the pole. There’s also no opening in the top of the pole to get down to it.

I have no access to the back of the bolt without completely tearing my RV apart. The bolt (i am assuming it is a carriage bolt, all i see is the smooth part) was holding up a bracket for an awning i removed. I was thinking of drilling out the bolt (like it was a rivet) but am afraid i might make it worse. This bracket is on a fiberglass topper on a Ford van to convert it to an RV.

How is the bolt attached? If it is a carriage bolt, it would have a nut on the opposite side that could be removed. From what you describe, it honestly sounds like you may not have much choice but to try and drill out the bolt.

@@AlbanyCountyFasteners Thank you very much for your opinion and i think you are correct, drilling is my only option. I am just afraid i will loosen it, it will start spinning, create a small opening, and then i will really be stuck, i will not be able to further drill it, and it is too close/tight to cut or saw...lol. I wish i knew how it was attached. Maybe i could buy a small scope and look in there somehow.

that's great if the square beneath the head is still bit into the material the was bolted together. But if some moron cranked the bolt and spun the head then the only way to remove is cut the nut or torch off

Sometimes the head can be gripped with locking pliers and thus prevented from turning.

The following are two more ways to remove a rusted bolt. Spray it down with DW 40 days before removing then heat the bolt until red and glowing then cool the bolt with cold water then proceed to remove the nut.

that's great if you can get to the head ---- if it is holding a trailer hitch to a vehicle frame that's boxed in and on the install you set the bolt on top of a square piece that has the square so bolt won't turn and instead of torquing the nut they just used impact gun until it stops rounding the square . they got it in you have to remove it winding out not an option
