For anyone in UK or Europe watching this, wondering how the heck you do A5 and A4 punching on this machine (which is really designed for the American market that uses imperial measurements, although the latest model has both metric and imperial rulers)..here's how I figured it out (by trial and error): A5 (landscape format / short edge): Make sure the paper is aligned to FIRST LINE on the first (upper) rule guide, which is 1/17th of an inch. So in other words, you're moving the paper to the right by 1/17th of an inch which will give you perfectly centered holes on the short edge of A5 paper. You need to pull out button/plug 12 as that hole is not needed. I haven't tried doing A5 portrait mode yet, but if you look at the A4 method below, it should be exactly the same except you're obviously only punching once on A5 paper which is exactly half the width of A4. A4 (portrait format / long edge): Pull the ruler slide outwards 2 clicks to the left. On the newer models that have the metric ruler to the bottom, you'll see that 17cm at the top should line up perfectly with 32cm on the bottom from 2 clicks. Pull out plug 11 (marked A4 on newer models) as that hole is not needed. The paper will only be punched half way across due to the width limit of the machine. Turn the paper around (non-punched side facing right obviously), and punch. You now have perfectly centered holes on A4 paper. Tip: Use the little button to the left hand side to secure your paper before punching. Practice makes perfect. Practice on scrap paper. Because the A5 method requires a bit of precision aligning to 1/17th of an inch line (although its not difficult with a few practice attempts), it's recommended to punch your front and back covers WITH some paper at same time, so it looks neat and the holes align perfectly when it's wire bound. Hope that helps someone!

I just got my cinch and was freaking out because I decided to cut the inside pages a little smaller than the outside cover and I just couldn't figure out how to make it all line up. I have a bind-it-all and have been considering the Cinch - thanks to your easy instructions, I can see that this machine is lots more flexible than my bind-it-all. @kitty3640 2 differences that I know off hand really fast...the bind it all has smaller rectangle cuts instead of circles for holes. second, the bind it all seems to have a more effective way of binding the rings in a perfect circle...the cinch takes a little tweaking :) I'm actually still thinking about getting the bind it all, too. The Cinch will be easy for my kids to use...they've used it for school projects, but I want the rectangular cut holes for some mini's

Thanks! I was planning to punch my own holes but wasn't sure of the best way to achieve centering and evenness of the holes or whether the wires of the O Rings were pliable enough to be manipulated by hand. You solved the mystery!

Why wouldn't they just make a hole puncher that handles 8 1/2 X 11? Seems terribly inefficient if you're making several books, and you have to stop and do all these calculations just to punch some holes. The name "The Cinch" is kind of misleading...because it's not a cinch, it's complicated and awkward. They make machines that handle larger sheets, and also will do the binding for you, and you don't have to stop mid-job and fudge anything.

Can someone please tell me, what is the newest version of the Cinch, when I do a search I see yellow ones, pink ones, blue ones, and black and white ones....I went to the we r memory keepers website and typed Cinch binding machine in the search box and all that came up was accessories for the machine and not the machine itself. I looked on the Michaels site and couldn't find one, is this a discontinued item? Just to let you know, I am asking this question on other KZread sites in hopes of someone answering me. Thanks

Barbra the newest version is the Black and White Heidi Swapp branded Cinch. It punches square holes.
