Qui-Gon Jinn & Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Maul [4K HDR] - Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
Фильм және анимация
Qui-Gon Jinn & Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Maul, or better known as the "Duel of the Fates" lightsaber battle, cut down into a single cohesive scene here and shown in 4K HDR.
A 4K HDR sample from my Extended Star Wars Episode I Cut, simply titled "The Phantom Menace - Extended Edition". As of today, both cuts have now been updated to a new 2.0 version, featuring several minor tweaks in audio, updates to the HDR color timing (especially for Episode I), tweaks to transitions, and brand new A.I. upscales of many of the deleted scenes. A total of 7 deleted scenes have been restored in the film.
Note: The trimmed down version of the duel of the fates battle is only for the youtube upload. The version scene in the film cut itself won't be intercut in this same way.
Both of my Extended Episode I and II cuts are available in both 4K HDR and 1080p SDR, along with my other edits like the 4.5 hour Revenge of the Sith - The Siege of Mandaore Supercut the, Star Wars Episode IV - The Rogue Cut, and many more!

Honestly, the thing i like most about this scene is the window into each of their personalities when trapped between the gates. Maul is impatiently pacing back and forth, eager to kill his prey like a predator. Qui Gon is tensely, but patiently meditating, to reserve his strength and focus. And finally Obi Wan, helplessly stuck behind, but alert and ready to reach and help his friend the very second the gates open. Not a single word of dialogue between them, and we learn so much about them by simply watching. It's such a small thing, but i massively appreciate little character moments like that.

My favorite scene in Starwars. Maul embraces this fight like no other character, patiently and methodically hunting his prey across the galaxy. When the gates open he is out numbered 30 to 1, with two Jedi to defeat. Maul wanted the fight, he wanted to beat both Jedi at once. This scene is better than the whole sequel trilogy 😂😭
maul standing behind the door like "theyll be here aaaany minute now"
This scene always gets me, how Qui -Gon meditates and Darth maul paces back and forth, you can feel the hate towards Qui-Gon and he simply prepares for battle, still gets me today

I always wondered if Qui-Gon, during his meditation, foresaw that he would die. It would've been more epic if that were true because as soon as the shields disable, he doesn't cowardly run away, but he charges right at Maul and fights courageously.
Obi wan is such a good form 3 defense user that he knew at 3:31 qui gon was at a move disadvantage but still had hope he could turn it around... the subtle details after rewatching makes these films even better
1:44 Damn that b!tch slap by Qui Gon was 🤌
who else is here taking a trip down memory lane of when they were kids............welcome brothers and sisters

Was amazing first I saw on in cinema was to young to see when came out so iconic just amazing
Nothing compares seeing something this the very first time. And something so simple but impactful. Seeing only single lightsabers. Then a "bad guy" we always labled, whips out a DOUBLE blade. Young or Old, you WILL indeed pay full attention. ✋😔👌
Anyone else get goosebumps when the music kicks in when obi wan is trying to catch up as qui gon is driving maul back
I like that Qui Gon meditates during the break but then attacks once it ends. This shows that he is balancing his mind, while maul is all aggression.

Yeah, and look where that got him. lol Maul, aka mr. “all aggression”, won the fight in case you didn’t notice.

@@sparrowprince3432 Likewise, look where it led Darth Maul his entire existence. Slavery, suffering, death, anger, hatred. He was a rabid attack dog that suffered not just before his defeat, but after it. Obi Wan, if anything, ended his suffering. Qui Gon, however, meditated, accepting in peace that if this was to be his end, it would be. And once it came, he would become one with the Force.
@ricksaburai

It has nothing to do with being at peace, it's a known technique called combat meditation that's supposed to give the user a temporary boost in their connection to the Force
0:53 JESUS! THE BUTTERFLY TWISTS! 🤣 holy shit Darth Maul’s actor was seriously fit and active man. Hella befitting to be the only one to wield a two-sided lightsaber

Imagine how fast you would cut your legs and arms off if you had no proper training and experience with acrobatics and double lightsaber handling. X3 Real or not, the actor for Darth Maul is a legend.
Just saw this again in theaters and this entire pre fight sequence is so damn insane by Maul. Dude was literally standing in the way of 18 armed soldiers 1 armed Queen Amidala and 2 more Queen’s guards, (also armed) PLUS to extreamly skilled Jedi. Soon as the doors opened he wanted all the smoke. Was ready to drop every single one of them to get to Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan literally daring them all to press him. This has gotta be one of the coldest scene’s in SW history. They don’t know how close they all came to death. Qui-Gon saying “We’ll handle this” saved all their lives when you really think about it.
The 25th anniversary is coming up! This fight will never NOT be awesome as hell!!!!
Still one of the best lightsaber duels of the franchise, wow

One of the greatest movies of all time

@pa.encema2821 thank you, nobody even knew there was such a thing, I guess unless the hardcore fans, but I didn't know😢
I can’t explain how powerful a moment this was as a kid seeing this in theaters. People went absolutely CRAZY when the doors opened up screaming and yelling with electricity. You could even see the parents faces change with excitement that didn’t care for Star Wars or knew nothing about it. Even they knew they were witnessing something spectacular and a once in a lifetime moment

Greatest Lightsaber Duel in the Entire Series.
I was like 8 watching this in the movie theaters thinking it was boring af until I saw this. It was the best thing I’ve ever seen.
*Your master, Qui-Gon Jinn, I gutted him while you stood helpless and watched. How did that make you feel, Obi-Wan? Your rage has unbalanced you. That is not the Jedi way, is it?*
Some people don’t like this scene due to the lack of talking. But personally I think the way they fight says everything for them.
One of the best duels in cinematic films. Top action, no dialogue, the looks each character conveys and "Duel of the Fates". Doesn't get any better.
This came out in 1999, and it still blows every single Disney Star Wars duel out of the water. Just wrapped up with the Ahsoka finale, and the choreography was abysmal. The combination of George Lucas, John Williams, Nick Gillard, and Ben Burtt will never be surpassed. What Disney is doing to Star Wars is infuriating. The Prequel Duels will never grow stale.

they milking the fuck out of SW
To this day I still love how Qui-gon sometimes forgoes using his lightsaber in favor of boxing. Imagine locking blades one second and the next thing you know your jaw is busted
This is why I freaking love the double blade stance in jedi survivor. It's so elegant and ferocious, quick and precise, beautiful and deadly.
This is my favourite all time best star wars scene. Music, fighting, Obi Wan, Republic. Awesome
0:53 This part always gives me goosebumps.

I love young arrogant obi wans cocky approach
The camerawork is great too, plenty of wide shots and not an excessive amount of cuts, since in this case they actually know how to fight.
3:07 that force speed they used at the beginning of the movie would have come in real handy there.
If Qui Gon won against Maul, Anakin would never have been lost to the dark side
00:56 Such a slick looking move.
I mean it’s by far the most important duel, it literally decided the fate of Anakin. If Maul had succeeded, he would have killed Padme, Anakin, and who knows who else.

And if Qui-Gon had won, Anakin’s fate would have been much different because Obi-Wan would not have been the mentor.

Well let's see: Anakin was up in space and would still have destroyed the control ship The droid army would still have been wiped out. But Maul probably would have killed Padme and the rest of the naboo leaders. So I guess it comes down to whether or not he Trade Federation would recover from that and come back to wipe out the Gungans (probably would). Anakin would likely get taken prisoner and Sidious immediately takes him as an apprentice, rather than "watching his career with great interest."
@osirissmith5254
Жыл бұрын
Not really. According to the Darth Plageius book, Anakin force presence is felt prior to the movie begin. So Plageius wanted the boy first before the Jedi Order could get to him. He had Sidious to send Maul to find the boy. So overall, Sidious and Darth Plageius wanted the boy. The Princess would of been killed or used as wager for trade routes or something along those lines. Read Darth Plageius book it’s Sidious origin story and Ep I does come into the book! :)
@osirissmith5254

@@derek96720 Exactly! Plageius wanted Sidious to get Anakin because of the special force presence that was felt in the universe.
I know the prequel trilogy gets a lot of hate, but you can't deny that this is one of the best moments in Episode 1. The music is especially chilling. And the fight choreography is fantastic. Hands down, one of the best moments of the prequel trilogy.
2:14. Lucas's directing and Liam just kicking arse as usual. Thanks for quailty vid. 🎬
Bro that entrance is the most badass boss entrance I have ever seen
It's scary how easily he handled both of them at first.
0:02 is there anything stopping them from all just blasting away at Darth Maul considering his light sabre wasn’t out yet……

The intro is absolutely the best part!!
THIS is the best saber duel Period. It was the first time we say Jedi and Sith at full Power of the old Days battleing it out. It was perfectly choreographed and had the right amount of tension. Maul vs QG & OB forever!
You're a badass when you're just standing there and make an entire unit take the longer way around.
Choreography was mindblowing
Fun fact that I'm sure most people in this chat already know: the "Duel of the Fates" *isn't* the Jedi versus Darth Maul. It's 'which one of the Jedi will survive'. Because if Qui Gon had won, Anakin would've been mentored by someone who actually liked him, and he probably wouldn't have fallen to the dark side. Put in other words: if Qui Gon survived (or maybe, even if both Jedi died) there would have never been a Darth Vader!

I'm just gonna put it out there... And not as a joke. But if they'd just left the nine-year-old kid at home with his mother, where the kid wanted to be, there never would've been a Darth Vader. If we accept the Force as basically God, or "fate" within the Star Wars universe, then it wouldn't have mattered if he was trained as a Jedi or not. He would've either brought balance to the Force regardless, or someone else would've taken the role, and that would've probably been less destructive. Anakin was not feeling it. Whatever he was saying out loud, it's possible he just was not meant to be a Jedi, and that there was no possible path that wouldn't have led him to the dark side eventually.
3:33 the beginning of the end of the Jedi
I always love that bit where obi wan fakes a hit and qui gon goes all in!
