I still remember the first time I heard The Roots , as a 15 years old metalhead. What struck me the most was the drumming. The groove, the dynamics! Questlove is one of the most talented drummers in the industry. Mad respect!

You’re absolutely right. No matter where I hear him his drumming stands out.

Same age, me and friends were all DIY punk rockers (with the jackets with spikes and patches , the zines, and whatnot), and every one of us had the roots and KRS-One records to go with our Crass, Rancid, and Propagandhi 7 inches.
Mannn I'm obsessed with this episode. Need "Questlove returns" and "Questlove returns again" expeditiously.

Same, he's amazing. So funny and fascinating
Not only has he great timing as a drummer, but also as a comedian. Humble, self-debricating humour, love it. Such a nice, cool session

@@vincevvn Well, be that as it may - I never wrote that. I actually wrote that he "has *great timing as a* drummer". Nevermind. A lot of people are struggling to read sentences correctly, so🤷♂...
Went to see The Roots for the first time in college. They were playing on campus. I was always a huge fan since their Organix debut. Couldn’t wait to see them live…As the crowd was waiting, we see Black Thought (Tariq) walk out to the mic and he solemnly announces that he’s received news that Jam Master Jay from the seminal hip hop group Run-DMC had been shot (that there was a possibility he was severely injured or possibly no longer with us)…My heart sank cuz Run DMC were one of the reasons I fell in luv w/ the genre as a child. There was no smart phones back then to get updates on the matter so all I could think about was the possibility that JMJ was no longer w/ us. But The Roots came out anyway and blew the doors off the place. Quest was in his bag that night…Their performance was mind boggling. It wasn’t until hours later when I stepped one foot back home when my mother immediately told me that “That some hip hop person you would know was murdered”. I froze in place….I thank Quest and The Roots for positively distracting me from my emotions that night…Still one of the best live performances I’ve ever witnessed.
the roots, conan, and quest love. all the best things.
Appreciate the mention of Tar, movie is criminally underrated and should've won at least one Oscar
I wanted the rest of the story... what a cool origin story. Make a biopic movie Questlove!
Wow! What a fantastic story! Questlove is an amazing story teller. I hope Conan has him come on again, because the four of them had such a great chemistry.
I could listen to him talk about just about anything for a very long time.
I saw the Roots 20 years ago, opening for who knows? They are for real artists and musicians...❤
So glad Matt and Sona were there for it! Questlove just seems like such a pleasure to be around. No wonder he's so timeless!
I fell in love with The Roots back in high school, 98, 99, and have always appreciated them. Quest being himself is just a joy. This is the best thing I’ve seen him in since Dave Chappelle’s Block Party.
The best guest this podcast has ever had and that is saying A LOT. I hope he does become the Sandra Bernhard to Conan's Letterman
I love seeing how Quest goes on these rabbithole tangents because it's exactly how my mind works too
I wonder if Questlove would ever consider making a podcast. I could listen to him talk for hours.

yeah he has a podcast with Phonte. Not the best podcast technically, and he is a bit all over the place during interviews, but it's pretty good. Phonte got the best questions though.
This was fantastic. Thank you. I woke up mad but I can't stay mad with this kinda love
What an awesome Origins story! Loved it!
This is probably in the top 5 interviews I’ve ever seen on Conan. Even though I watched Questlove at his regular Brooklyn Bowl DJ sessions back in the mid 2010s , and listening to Roots albums prior to that and seeing them live, you still don’t get a sense of how incredibly interesting and hilarious this guy is until this convo. Please more of these kind of interviews!
Questlove's laugh is maybe the best ive ever heard
This whole podcast is a great discussion, thank you
Loving this interview! One of the best. Thank you!
I remember that episode of Fallon when Quest spit up water when key and Peele acknowledged him. 😂😂
I used to hang out this club in chinatown LA and guest Questlove DJed there. It was great! BTW. Tar was good!
I've never heard someone casually mouth Flight of the Bumblebee but my goodness it's recognizable when he does it.
The Roots should come out with a book!!!
I hope they get Questlove back ASAP!! Like, Deep Dive episodes just like the Dana Carvery pre-Summer Smores episodes.
Heard a song i liked and went to grab a CD, except i was supposed to get Rusted Root and ended up with the Roots . Never made it back for the RR, i was cool with it.
Great episode 😂😂😂
Love that you're putting the podcast up here on KZread, it's my primary medium for listening. You guys could really up your thumbnail game though

I LOVE Conan and the story at 3:06 is so freaking incredible in every way, so funny and cool !!!! PLEASE CONAN HAVE ME ON AS YOUR REGULAR GUY, I ALSO want to be knocked up against a wall and how you knock people around like a crazy man like you did to John Krasinski !!!! LOL LOL 😅🤣😂 Your a LUNATIC in a fun way ha ha
sounds like he's describing an unaired episode of the new Wonder Years
Well ACTUALLY Questlove: in the film Lydia Tar wasn't "built" by the Curtis Institute. She teaches there but studied and got her degree at Uni Vienna ;)
Greatest reason to start a band 🤟🏾
I knew it. When I aw Brooklynn Babylon years ago, I thought, these guys have been to college, music college performing arts school. It is just a way people develop socially when they do.
POST FULL VIDEO EPISODES!
2:29 i didn’t have friends there 😂😂😂
I want the roots origin story, to be a sitcom. I would most definitely watch that show.
Yeah, if I saw Mr hooper walking down the street I'd fall out.
So the greatest Hip-Hop band ever was created to impress girls, im not shocked lol
Conan interrupted too often, but it was a great interview all the same.
I dont get the 🤮 thing 🤷♂️

You don't get why he threw up or don't get why it's funny? He threw up because he was nervous/ anxious after suddenly meeting the woman from Sesame Street [some people vomit under high stress situations]. It's funny because he had no nerves performing at Radio City Music Hall with no notice, but got overwhelmed by just seeing the Sesame street lady.

Make $250K a year teaching music (sure, whatever), but that's "too small"? LOL! This guy really is full of himself. Does he own the stadium, or studios he works in now? Nope ;)
He lost me when he said black people want safety but a few seconds later he said he grew up in a very dangerous environment where people were constantly dying.

@@Tonyhouse1168as true as that is, all races want safety. It’s not just a black thing. I grew up in the ghetto and I’m Asian and white and most of my family is black or mixed with black. The capitalist rich people are the problem not the poor white man or poor of any color.

Today I learned: questlove is spoiled af
Questlove has been an advocate for racial discrimination and violence on Jews in Hollywood. A rather funny part about it is that the best Roots cd involved major participation from a Jewish artist, and his film was produced by a Heb.
