Questions You Should Ask During an Instructional Design Interview as a Candidate

#InstructionalDesign #eLearning #LearningAndDevelopment
Interviewing for any instructional design or eLearning development job can be nerve-wracking, regardless of your experience. And while the goal of an interview is primarily about the hiring manager evaluating your skills, experience, and whether or not you’re a good fit for the role and team, you have to remember that it’s a two-way conversation. An interview is also your opportunity to ask questions and evaluate how the team operates, what type of work they do, what their instructional design processes look like, and whether or not the position is one that you see yourself in.
The truth is, the only way you’ll be able to uncover this information is to ask a ton of questions. But what questions should you be asking during an instructional design or eLearning interview as a candidate?
Well, in this video, I’ll share questions you should be asking about the team, the work, and the strategy, all of which will help you stand out as a desirable instructional designer or eLearning developer.

Excellent advice Tim! My questions usually revolve around "The Work" category but your other ones are great strategic questions that really help you understand the people and team you would be working with.

Thanks for sharing, Kevin! Yes, asking questions about the work is always a good place to start…but going beyond that can really help you get a good picture of how that work is executed through the team and the larger strategy.

Having good questions not only shows you did your homework but helps you evaluate whether these people and expectations are for you! 😊

Yes! As a hiring manager, there’s nothing I loved more than a candidate with a ton of questions and curiosity.

Tim, while you gave the disclaimer at the end of the video regarding "company culture," I would argue that some of the recommended questions you outlined can definitely figure into that, but more so on the side of team culture, which will impact the candidate on a daily basis.

I totally agree! There's a lot you can infer about the team / company culture, depending on the answer you get! Thanks for pointing that out!

Hoping this question will find you here in the comments. A role in a small 5 person instructional boutique company has been posted. I did some digging on the team and it is a dream role for me. The pay is just average but what is more important to me is their focus on non-traditional creative eLearning such as scenario, and game based learning. These were the focuses for me as an educational researcher, and teacher. BUT the majority that work was not adult focused. I have the education in design and adult learning theory. but only lots of small projects and presentations not large course delivery for adults. Given the market I have zero chance of landing the role strictly going the normal route of applying online. I am thinking of taking a gamble and reaching out to the owner via email. Thoughts? Am I insane?

Thanks for posting! I say do it! Send the email, and let them know how interested you are. I recommend you still apply like normal first, and then reach out personally. Just make sure your message sounds as human as possible…and demonstrates your enthusiasm. What do you have to lose by being bold? Do it!

Thank you so much for your feedback so quickly. Your videos have been so helpful. You are so much more human and less “instructional influencer” than some. ❤

Thanks for watching and commenting! I edit and create all of my videos in Camtasia. Many of the graphics are created in Adobe Illustrator...and then I take the graphics and animate them directly in Camtasia. I'm working on some future videos to walk through this in the future. Stay tuned!

Asking to see examples of learning content the company has produced can be really helpful, but what about when past examples of learning content cannot be shared? What is the company trying to hide? I've had this happen in an interview.

If they are unable to share past example, I wouldn't assume they are trying to hide anything. It's likely the content is proprietary or sensitive. So it's important to be upfront when asking the question to see work examples, stating that you understand that they may not be able to share.
