Interviewing for eLearning & Instructional Design Jobs | Community Roundtable Discussion

#eLearning #InstructionalDesign
If you're looking to land your next (or first) eLearning or instructional design job, it starts with nailing the interview process. But, what are hiring managers looking for in a candidate, and how can you make sure you show you have the skills they're looking for? And what about portfolios-what are hiring managers looking for when they open your portfolio?
In this Community Roundtable Discussion, my panel of real-world hiring managers and leaders, Melissa Milloway, Emily Whitmer, Keith Anderson, and Dana Freeman, discuss and answer questions about interviewing for eLearning and instructional design jobs.

WOW- so much information in here. I had an interview that had a case study exercise and I was a soup sandwich! In 30 min my brain was still trying to process the topic and normally it takes me time to start "dreaming" about how I would lay it out, let alone develop it. Although I have been in ID for over 15 years, it's one thing to have the experience when you're in it versus being able to show it right off the cuff. Really left me flat footed! When you create your portfolio, do you pay for your own licenses for Captivate, Articulate, Rise etc? That can get pretty pricey. Or do you just lay out it out in PowerPoint and then walk through, explain how you would used Advanced Action, Variables etc.. to complete the work.

Thanks for watching, Christine! As for your question...it's really up to you whether or not you want to invest in Storyline (or another tool). However, if you're purchasing it for job searching reasons, you may be able to deduct it on your taxes. In all honestly, investing in the tool (while it is expensive), will give you the much needed to time to really build your skills with that tool and design a much stronger portfolio. I hope that helps!

Thank you so much for this incredible session! It was filled with great nuggets of advice and I appreciate all the panelists taking time out of their day to allow us all to learn from them. I have a better understanding of what I need to work on, and am ready to get out there and be my true authentic self when applying!
