Personal head cannon? It is Zeus. His daughter needed to teach some mortals a lesson, so she asked Zeus to turn into a pig and him being Zeus, he just went “Yah, sure, I can do that”. Wouldn’t be at all surprised if Zeus swallowed some lightning bolts, turned into a boar, and spat them at people for fun.

According to some sources the Calydonian Boar is the offspring of the Crommyonian Sow which is in turn the offspring of Typhon and Echidna.

The most plausible explanation is that it was originally just a normal boar that Artemis mutated. Which is pretty terrifying now that I think about it.

It would make sense Artemis could create life, she is the Goddess of the Hunt, so she could replenish whatever she removed.

Zeus’s bolts’ later models were made by Hephaestus but the originals were made by the hundred handed ones back in Titan times

I think it's some sort of Wonder Woman scenario. After the city failed to please Artemis, she went to her father and requested her make her some sort of thing to punish the city. Zeus creates the boar out of clay, makes it come to life and gives it to Artemis. That explains why it shoots lightning from its mouth. Or maybe I just read too many comic books, idk

She had taken care of that boar just like other gods had taken some monsters too (Selene with nemean lion, Hera with Hydra, Hades with Cerberus, etc, in the case of Artemis it was this boar). The Boar was born from the crommian sow, who was born from Typhon and Echidna

It actually presents itself many times in Greek mithology, it is always described as an angry and very strong beast that will hunt anything it crosses. Usually tho it is made as an enemy for the "hero" of that same story

I was also under the impression that Zeus got his thunderbolt from the Cyclops

So you're telling me that Artemis told Zeus that there was a new "mortal breeder" in a certain location and of course Zeus would take a disguise only to ultimately got mad coz Zeus can't find the Breeder that Artemis told him to Well that's...... Believable

I like to think it was a gift from when Artemis was a young goddess, for hunting. She would wind up having to imprison it after it killed multiple of her hunters.

Since she's goddess of the hunt, she was also often seen as a goddess over the wilds and the beasts as well. Many of the curses of Artemis involved her unleashing powerful animal monsters or turning people into animals. Maybe she just took a regular boar and then just turned it into a monster and unleashed it on Calydon

Within Greek Myth Artemis has a pretty decent relationship with Posiedon, Ares, and the Cthonic Deities so its possible that she Enchanted a normal boar she had Ares summon or summoned herself. My reasoning for summoning it herself comes from her Hunting Domain, I imagine that she can summon things that are considered to prey animals or animals that are hunted.

for the lightning thing, if you look at other monsters, they tend to have powers that overlap with those of gods. sirens use their songs to seduce sailors into crashing their ships along their shores, and it's said that Aphrodite/Eros are responsible for love as an emotion, so unless lust/sexual desire also count (which it probably does), the sirens' power set overlaps with Aphrodite. So I don't think the Calydonian boar was made by Zeus or Hephaestus. My belief is that Artemis either created it (she's a wilderness god so it makes sense), or it's one of Typhon's children (he's already the father of monsters, what's one more?)

Yes this boar was related to typhon. Typhon and Echidna generated the crommion sow, a female boar k1lled by the hero Theseus. This sow in turn had the Calydonian Boar.

I think it was Zeus in boar form... It would make sense with the "unleashed" idea! Artemis didn't send it on the city, she just didn't stop it this time! That's my headcanon

I think the Greek gods are just known for what they're the best at. Like how someone who does carpentry and is also good with computers, but slightly better known for carpentry.

We actually get at an explination, tho much much later. A philosopher by the name of Strabo describes in his writings that the Calydonian Boar is an offspring of the Crommyonian Sow, one of the monsters that Theseus killed. The Crommyonian Sow, in turn, is an offspring of Typhon and Echidna, as were 90% of monsters, so it might have inherited some powers. As for how the Crommyonian Sow mated, she might have just found a boar in the forest before she died. Hopefully this does help.

I read a story where Lightning always existed but Gaia hid it in the skys to keep it out of the wrong hands, and then eventually gave it to Zeus. Zeus had the cyclopse create the bolts outnof pure lighrning. So maybe natual lightning is differerent from THE Lightninf bolt. I donno

All gods of old had the innate abilities to manifest a created thing, but as well each one has varieing degrees of said power so some are only able to manifest things with a small mass and some could manifest things with a bigger mass, but it would require more energy for the bigger mass creatures. If that makes sense, think of it as levels, they had different levels, or degrees of the same abilities

Maybe that boar ate Zeus' Lightning Bolt beforehand(which that boar found it by accident) and then Artemis found and tamed it.

Considering mythology, I'd bet Zeus likely "did it" with a boar, then gave it lightning powers and likely didn't care for it so Artemis took care of it. Idk
