Quest 3 Elite Strap With Battery Review: Is It Worth It?

I've been using the Meta Quest 3 Elite Strap with Battery since I bought my Quest 3 at launch. I share my experience of using this head strap and compare it to the regular strap and also to the Quest 2 Elite battery strap.
I share the pros and cons of this headstrap and discuss whether it is a good option to improve comfort and battery life for your Quest 3, or whether you should go for one of the third-party alternatives.

    How do you compare the quest 3 to the pico 4? I have both currently and find the pico quite uncomfortable stock, the res is also quite a lot lower but for me the sweetspot is quite disappointing on the pico. What virtual desktop settings are you using for the pico?

    For PCVR, they're quite similar. Displays, lenses, FOV etc. Pico 4 facial interface much less comfortable, but overall headset better balanced. For standalone VR, Quest 3 is a very comfortable winner.

    Just got my Quest 3. In terms of comfort, after about 30 min my concentration gets interrupted by the pressure on my forehead and cheek bones. Sure, I have adjusted it endlessly, but there's no getting around that it is front heavy. It can't just sit comfortably balanced. I'll be looking for a replacement strap. Thanks for the video!

    I think a battery strap is always going to be the most comfortable option because the rear-mounted battery balances the weight of the headset on your head. The official battery strap is good, but its expensive and there have been a lot of reliability issues. I'd say the KIWI Design battery head strap is the best I've tried so far.

    You make a lot of very good and valid points. I think, mainly, that Meta try to screw us with the high costs of accessories. Surely this is counterproductive? I would love to ALWAYS buy the official accessories, and I think most people would. Were their prices more competitive, then more of us would buy from them rather than from 3rd party alternatives. Lower prices, but with increased adoption would surely make more sense? But this is Zuckerburg!!!

    I remember when Sony did this to the memory cards for the PSP and VITA. When there was no affordable solution, users just hacked the devices to make them usable, which lead to their downfall. Hope that doesn't happen with Quest, or any other VR provider.

    It really depends on the game I guess. When it comes to VR or pancake gaming, i usually tap out at 2 1/2 hours max, for something like Resident Evil 4 VR. My eyes start to strain and the experience starts to become less enjoyable. I was thinking of just getting the standard elite strap without the battery, but if it craps out at just under 2 hours I'll most likely regret it. No complaints with the Elite strap here. Played Population:One for just over 4hrs straight, Elite strap was 0% but headset still had 87% on it so could have played for another hour or so. If you think the Bobo is better, this may have been true for Quest 2 but not Quest 3. The Bobo batteries are 2.6amps only drawing 13Watts. Quest 3 draws 18w-22watts, so the B2’s just can’t keep up with the power hungry Q3. Jay Bratt has already covered this on his KZread channel. • @meejmuas8686

    @meejmuas8686

    @VRLowdown I figured it out. The top strap of elite strap makes a massive difference of where the weight of the Quest 3 will exert on your face. If the top strap is very short, it tilts the face mask where all of the pressure is on your cheek bones. If the strap is very long, the pressure is heavily exerted on the top of the mask, where your forehead is. The Q3 is still front heavy, despite pulling in the thickness of the headset, and it pulled that weight into the front mask. The top of the strap only adjusts where the fulcrum point is. Hence, elite strap still needs more weight at the back of the elite strap where the battery is move that fulcrum to the center. For the time being though, adjusting that top headstrap will heavily determine where the weight is distributed on which part of your face. Elite strap is still not a complete solution, but adjusting the top strap will help mediate some of the discomfort it causes, or putting more weight at the battery to move the fulcrum closer to the top of your head

Steam said the most common vr headset used on their platform is the quest 2. Most users will tether to the PC, but if you use a battery pack you can't simultaneously use the additional power and tether!! There is no technical reason why it should be designed this way. If you look at the pin outs of USB3 all they had to do was create a splitter, for better looks carry the data cables through to the output into the headset. Stupid or lazy I'm not sure. I did email kiwi support requesting the pin out schematics so I could make my own but heard nothing back.
