It's my favorite album all time by far! I went and listened to the podcast to hear what Alan's (I think) thoughts were. I, like him, love watching people's face when they listen to this not having heard any of it. Love see people enjoying as I have for, wow, 35 years now! Alan did exactly what I would have as far as picking the worst song. I mean how can you!?? There isn't one, but I get it, so I would have picked an intro piece. But having to pick a longer song, I picked the exact same song, the mission as the least favorite. Bear in mind I still love that song, but if I had to absolutely pick one, that'd be it. I was shocked. Operation mindcrime was his pick. Did not see that coming +

When the Grammy's added a Heavy Metal category in 1988, everyone was pissed Jethro Tull beat out Metallica, but Queensryche was the one that got snubbed. I love Metalica, I saw with Cliff Burton, but Mindecrime was fricken genius level metal. And, every song rocks and could stand alone.

Queensryche (original line-up) is my favorite band in the universe! And I've really enjoyed your down-to-earth approach to the songs you listen to. You're honest, but not unnecessarily critical, acknowledging, in so many words, that music is very subjective. I totally loved watching you hear O:MC for the first time. And then I scrambled to find your podcast with your friend (who did a GREAT job of recapping each song. He's one of the few people I've heard that has really gotten the finer nuances of the music, lyrics, and overall storyline)! May I add that The Mission was one of my least favorites on the album until I heard it several times. Now it's one of my favorites. I don't know if it was by design or subconsciously done, but the part where Nikki is saying how his mission saved the world, and how they'd all stand proud was brilliantly done so that the music under those lyrics was belying the words. There was no triumph or feelings of victory in the music, rather regret and sorrow. And I agree, Nikki's starting to realize the movement he's become involved in is NOT a good one, but he's trying to convince himself otherwise. I agree that the title song is great except the chorus isn't quite as captivating as the others. But this whole album is truly a masterpiece in every respect. I NEVER get tired of listening to it even after 3+ decades! I hope you'll do more QR in the future. I like your approach and comments. I like hearing someone else's perspective. QR is a very versatile band. They always pushed out in different directions, yet always maintained that driving intensity and decided QR flavor. Not to mention Geoff''s incredible voice! There's one kind of sad but funny little snippet during the intro to Eyes of a Stranger. You'll hear one of the patients faintly in the background informing a nurse, "I don't want to take a bath!" Always makes me smile. Sorry for going so long. (I'm a little chatty).

Great reaction. I'm gonna hunt down that podcast and check it out. It's very hard to place Queensryche into one genre of metal. The hair-band thing was purely the image - the way they dressed, appeared on stage, album covers, etc. You KNOW that was a studio exec decision, not theirs. What's funny is the transition they make in the follow-up album to O:MC, "Empire," Queensryche's MOST commercial hit. After the success of Mindcrime, they developed enough cred to write their own way, without studio interference, so their transformation both in sound AND in image from their previous album is stark lol. The term "hair band" definitely went out the window, and fans classified them more of a progressive metal band, not so much in terms of their musical intricacies, ala Dream Theatre, but more in their conceptual releases.

Dude, I'm posting this too early I guess, but are you really doing the whole album? How fucking cool! If you keep doing this I'll be a subscribed fan. No one does this. You get the whole picture of the message being sent by listening to the whole album. This one is metal opera. Only other one I can think if is The Wall. Too cool! Ps: my favorite metal album before 1990. Can't miss a song, must listen from start to end.

What's hard about picking favorite albums and songs with QR is that there are so many different elements to love in their songs, and they're pretty diverse in the variety of songs they write ... Well, it's just VERY hard to pick! But if I could only bring ONE CD to a desert island, it would have to be O:M.
