From Bathsheba to the Queen of Sheba, from Jezebel to Esther, the Queens of the bible have been referenced in art, music and pop culture for thousands of years. But who were these ancient women? What were their stories and what historic evidence do we have of their lives? Today let’s meet the Queens of the Bible:
Michal - 1 Samuel 14:49
Bathsheba - 2 Samuel 11:3, 1 Chronicles 3:5
Queen of Sheba - 1 Kings 10:2, 2 Chronicles 9:1
Jezebel - 1 Kings 16:31
Athaliah - 2 Kings 8:16-11:16, 2 Chronicles 22:10-23:15
Vashti - Book of Esther
Esther - Book of Esther

It wasn’t that God would force that to happen. It was that, through David’s actions, it would happen when it didn’t have to happen. If he had left Bathsheba alone then he wouldn’t have had Solomon to overtake his brothers thrown causing the civil war and Absalom to do evil against David’s family

@@nataliakastner6268The whole thing with Absalom was a punishment for David stealing someone else’s wife (Bathsheba) and “deleting” the husband by putting him in a dangerous position in battle. It’s in 2 Samuel 12:11: “This is what the Lord says: ‘I am bringing trouble against you. This trouble will come from your own family. I will take your wives from you and give them to someone who is very close to you. He will have sexual relations with your wives, and everyone will know it!12 You had sexual relations with Bathsheba in secret, but I will punish you so that all the people of Israel can see it.’” So yes, if David just left Bathsheba alone, then maybe Absalom would have had a better story arc. David had a hand in Absalom’s downfall.

Imagine a grown man (king at that) throwing a tantrum because his wife said no to being humiliated 💀 and then Vashti gets demonized for setting boundaries. I went to a Catholic college and took a Biblical history class for credit. One of our subjects was the story of Esther. Our professor (who admitted to being a feminist) started a debate about who was the bigger hero: Esther or Vashti. I thought about it for a moment and then proposed that they both were heroes. Just in different ways. My professor (who was a fair woman) asked me to elaborate. I explained that they both were willing to face death (though Esther took three days to gather enough courage to go to her husband). While Vashti was protecting her dignity and self worth, Esther was protecting her people and her own life. Weren’t both aspects important? Why must one woman be heralded as the hero while the other treated as less valuable because she needed to gain courage to face a man who could have her put to death? Courage is being scared but still saddling up, according to John Wayne. It was an interesting discussion. I miss those days.

I always believed Vashti was innocent. She wasn't comfortable to appear practically nude(old Jewish tradition) in front of his crude and drunk men. The King should've been a real man and protected his wife's modesty but no he cared more about stupid drunk fools pressure. Some "strong" King right? I like that Esther argued with Mordecai that she would've done the same as Vashti even when he gave her a rant that disobedience was sin. But she breaks his argument by using examples of honorable people throughout Biblical history. Yes, Esther may have been the obedient, dutiful and driven woman of the old Biblical times but even she rebelled against certain gross traditions towards women. I love her. I respect Vashti too. PS: a lot of the Bible was written by the winners of the time. God never supported rape or innocence being exploited, that was the voice of corrupted men. That's why you must differentiate between the kind words of God and the malicious and bias words of men in the Bible. *Amazing video Lindsey! I always look forward to your videos as I love learning from you. A brilliant creator indeed. Sending love!!*🩷

In reference to the second part of your comment. This is why it is highly suggested to everyone who reads the bible to not take what is written literally as some parts of the bible do sound bias. It was because she honored God & His laws, even within the palace. But trust me, she didn't just waltz into the king's court unannounced without a care in the world. No, she knew she could be going to her death. But she went anyways to save her people, the Jews, who'd been targeted by an enemy. She fasted & prayed for three days, and her whole palace & her people with her, before she went before King Artaxerxes. Her famous line, which I love, is "and if I perish, I perish."

I believe it’s a misconception that Vashti was ordered to appear naked. According to the scriptures she was ordered to come wearing her beautiful crown, and some translations say the king told her to wear her crown and beautiful cloths. But it says nothing about her being forced to appear naked. Anyways, as a Jewish woman I don’t believe Vashti was evil. There’s nothing written about her other than the fact that she refused to be gawked at by a crowd of drunk men. As for anyone who truly committed atrocities against Jews, their wrong doings were always documented in scripture.

Another way of looking at it is that Vashti was the actual queen, and Achashverosh was the conqueror, who married her to solidify his kingdom, but, she reminded him that she was actual royalty, and he was just a conqueror. So, he plotted to get rid of her. He trapped her into doing something (not appearing at the drunken feast) where he could justify getting his royal court to condemn her to death. That way, it didn't look like he was killing her, but, just following a court ruling, solidifying his kingdom under him.

Vashti's story is interesting because of the evolving perspective of her. Her story was conceived during a time of great misogyny, and for centuries she was viewed as wicked for not obeying her husband. As our culture evolved and opened up more and more opportunities for women, Vashti earned a new interpretation as a woman who, rather than being disobedient, had backbone and demanded respect. It's interesting to see how our perspective on these women has evolved from a rigid, misogynistic one, to a more fair one that examines them as people with their own sense of dignities.

And when the showdown was happening, Elijah's tribute was soaked in water. The crowds watched Elijah drown his alter with water, the most precious resource. So when it was consumed by fire from heaven: the bull, the wood, the 12 stones representing the 12 tribes, and even the water licked up - that is what convinced them.

Its crazy how much these stories read as straight propoganda as an adult. A foriegn queen dares to worship her deity, and her name becomes synonymous with debauchery and dishonor. I remember learning that Vashti was a proud, disobedient woman. "Queen" Esther was likely just a favored concubine by the sounds of it. Her name wasn't even Esther. King David was a creep and pretty dishonorable guy.

Very intersting. I know the basics of Purim since I've been a child, but forgot about the details. I think the Purim Story is perfect for a Disney movie :). A heroine, a king, an evil guy, and Mordechai and Vashti will also find their places. Maybe Vashti was kinda evil or rather frustrated, but it turns out that Esther and Vashti knew each other since childhood and become allies against Haman and later Vashti and Mordechai become a couple. 😂

It's funny; I read a lot of the Bible early on as a kid, so I got to the Vashti part early enough to know the king maybe wasn't the hero. Then I started seeing versions in Sunday School and Veggie Tales where her story was just "she disobeyed the king" and I was like "...No?"

  • @phantasmicmasque

    @phantasmicmasque

    4 ай бұрын

Yeah, though they could hardly put that the king wanted her to strip naked for a crowd in a kids show. Though when I saw the veggie tales version I still took the queens side cuz no matter the context, they were a married couple and if one doesn’t want to do something they don’t want to do that should be respected. in fact the veggie tales one in my opinion makes the king look ridiculous cuz he wanted her to “make him a sandwich” and they threw her out of the palace for it when she refused! Like both make him look bad, one just a thousand times more appropriate for children.

Yay! My favorite is Michal, she saved David's life and they had this star crossed lovers story I really enjoy, since she was his first wife, it only makes sense she was his Queen. Many people talk about David/Bathsheba and I get it, but if David/Michal is adpated well then they would be THE couple. Their story has the princess and the warrior trope; the childhood crush trope; the Romeo and Juliet sperated by their family. Really, they have a interesting story when you look at it.
