Queen Victoria's Small Diamond Crown

Ойын-сауық

In this video I look at the history of the Little Diamond Crown Queen Victoria commissioned in 1870 and its purpose and use and the inspiration for it in two other crowns - the 1761 Diamond Nuptial Crown of Queen Charlotte and the 1685 State Crown of Queen Mary of Modena.

Hi Allan! I've been waiting for this one. For me, it is impossible to imagine Queen Victoria without that little crown. Even as a small boy, it fascinated me. I recall asking my mother why the lady was wearing such a small crown. Mom simply replied, "son, she was a queen, she could wear whatever she wanted." Mother was nothing if not practical and direct!

When I think of Queen Victoria, I always imagine her wearing this little diamond crown. Quite an affectation but she clearly loved it. And so many diamonds! In most of the statues of her here in Australia she is wearing this little crown. A defining piece of the Victorian age. Thank you so much Allan for yet another detailed look at a crown. You are a crown man!

What a beautiful small crown. It suited Queen Victoria so much and it is iconic. I cannot imagine anyone else wearing it as it was so much Victoria's crown. I wonder if you’d be tempted to consider the Imperial Crown of India - worn just once by George V at his Durbar proclamation as Emperor of India. It is much the most elegant and graceful of the crowns in the Jewel House I feel. Incidentally, isnt there some story about Queen Victoria’s little crown having been temporarily lost, only to be rediscovered in a boarded up cupboard at Buckingham Palace during George V’s reign? I may be wrong - thank you for another engaging and informative video.

I remember in the late 1990's. The Crown Jewels were brought to my hometown of Milwaukee. They were on display at a popular mall here in Milwaukee. They were replicas of the real crown jewels. The real ones weren't allowed to leave the UK. I remember reading that. Anyways, I remember reading that Queen Victoria had the small crown 👑 made for herself. And I think with her own money 💰. The Imperial Crown 👑 was too heavy for the short, small queen 👑. That's what I remember reading. Does anyone know if I'm right. What about the nice person who posted this info about the queen 👑. Wearing the small crown 👑. I'm a proud, black, Christian man who has lived in America all my life. But I've been a big fan of the British royal family. On and off 📴 I've read info, and saw things on TV 📺. And Googled about them a lot after the sad death of the late, great Princess Diana. God bless tthe King Charles lll 👑, his family. And the entire country of the United Kingdom. And the other lands that are under the reign of King Charles 👑.

As the little crown was sitting on veiling, it is highly likely that it was sewn onto the veil. Being lightweight, the little crown is more comparable to a tiara in terms of how it sits on the head. When modern royals wear tiaras, the tiara is often sewn into the hair with thread the same colour as the wearer's hair. In addition, the royal hairdresser will weave strands of the wearer's hair around the circle base, and then pin the hair, for added security. Tiara hairdos are a specialised skill. Many tiaras also have short updo combs sewn onto the base, to lock the tiara into position, (although these combs are never shown in official photos of such jewels). Modern tiara wearers can't just lift their tiaras off their heads at the end of their big occasion!

That would be fascinating if it fits into your remit so to speak.

The small Hanoverian crown discussed here was worn - perhaps most notably in the 20th century - by Princess Frederica of Hanover for her marriage to Crown Prince Paul of Greece in 1938. The couple became King and Queen of the Hellenes in 1947 and Queen Frederica became a somewhat controversial figure in the political upheavals in the Greece of the 1960s. There are many films and images of the 1938 wedding including this one kzread.info/dash/bejne/eHWCrZKPoMW5mZc.html The crown can be best seen at approx 1.54.

Sometimes it's easy to forget that these important and iconic personages were just people. Victoria obviously went into such a deep depression that she could hardly function, and this was at a time when there were no medications, professional counselors, or inpatient centers. I never knew why the little crown had been made, but it's both sad and culturally interesting that it was designed to wear while in mourning.

It’s a continuous practice since the Middle Ages. In peace time every sovereign has worn the parliamentary robe and crown of some sort at the state opening, except when a state opening occurs before their coronation - then they wear robe and no crown. The photos on the internet of Edward VII and George V in robe only were before their respective coronations. George VI is an anomaly as during much of the war the regalia wasn’t available for use.

Very nice and informative video on a piece of Regalia that is inseparably associated with Queen Victoria yet little is published about it. Note that although as Queen Regnant Victoria could have used colored stones on her small "State Crown" substitute, it is set with white diamonds exclusively. I'm sure that reflected Victoria's widowhood, as colored stones are contrary to mourning etiquette. Crowns used by the Sovereign may have colored stones, but those intended for Queen Consorts are set with white jewels only--diamonds and pearls. The queens' crowns of the 20th century are made of platinum rather than gold to further emphasize this "purity".
