Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden Tropical Rainforest Greenhouse Tour - Plant One On Me - Ep 136

In the previous episodes of 'Plant One On Me' (Ep 135, Vlog 24), we took a behind-the-scenes tour of the Limestone Display and Research greenhouses-both of which are not open to the public.
Today, however, I explore the 35-meter tall Tropical Rainforest Greenhouse with Dr. Piyakaset at the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden-who will give us a new appreciation for palms and the native plants of Thailand.

I enjoyed both experts bringing us the scientific names and impressions of jungle plants, mostly from Thailand. I am also very interested in tropical countries, my wife is from Sumatera Barat, and we both have been approx 10 times to Bogor Botanical Gardens, Java; 2 times to the Bot. Garden of Rio de Janeiro, 3 times to Nong Nooch Bot. Gardens, Thailand, 3 times to Huntington Bir. Gardens in California, to the main tropical Garden in Florida, to the Bot. Garden of Cibodas, Java, to Lancaster and Wilson Bit. Gardens, Costa Rica and we visited Indonesia approx. 20 times. For us it‘s probably the highlight of every holiday to make daytours into the jungle areas in these tropical countries. Our next vacation will be to Yucatán, Mexico in Sept. 2024. The whole family of Palms throughout the world covers so many different palms, alone this fact is simply amazing…. Thank you for giving us this impression of jungle plants !

Ill never forget the sorry state of my local tropical glashouse. 80% of foliage was covered with some dried out film of something... like some mud or pesticide. You could barely tell the color and the surface texture... oh well...

(3:40) - “Oh, that’s a Trevisia palmata “. - The ‘ah-ha’ moment when presented with a full size version of one’s little houseplant. ~ One reason some sizable rainforest species are viable as moderately sized indoor plants is because when starting life on the dim forest floor, they naturally remain in a slow growing juvenile state , sometimes for years, until an opportunity for rapid growth occurs if the canopy opens up letting more light in. In this type of juvenile state they often hold onto their leaves for years too.

Wow, what a great video! Thank you for sharing this high-resolution experience. :) I love seeing all the plants with botanical names given in captions, a wonderful learning tool. As a Canadian, and fellow obsessive botanist, it is absolutely breathtaking to be able to see so many gorgeous endemic Thai/ tropical plants in such a short span of time. Maybe it's my polite, overly considerate, humble Canadian upbringing, but I do wish that Summer would let the resident expert speak at greater length about the backstory of each plant here - sometimes it feels that she interrupts him in order to share her own knowledge (which is vast, no doubt, but not necessarily expert in these species, as he is) Given the specialness of this visit for us North Americans, it feels a little disappointing not to hear those insider tidbits from the man who described the species himself. Thank you again for your work Summer and team!
